Well Ive decided to get a D44a for the time being and build an 8.8 next winter (maybe). So the plan is to switch it to 4.10 gears. My question is about the carrier, is there a difference in the carrier on the 3.55's and the 3.73s, or will either one be okay for the lower gears (numerically higer)?

    Thanks

Did they even make a 44a for the ZJ with any gears other than 3.73? Mine had 373 gears and went to 4.56 without changing carriers.

Im not sure, car-parts.com lists them with 3.55's and 3.73's, so I thought I had better make sure. Now granted thats just info on line as I havent gone to check out any of them yet in person.

If you have 3.73 then the carrier doesn't need to be changed. If it's 3.55 then the carrier has to be changed.

i have a 00 wj with the 44a and 30 up front. i am wondering if i would have to change the carrier for 4:56 gears. i currently have 3:73 but want to go with 4:56. stock axles no new lockers or anything, but it has quadra drive. someone please let me know. thanks... also, whats the best place to get gears? i havent done gears myself before so this is gonna be a first. what will be involved in changing these gears? any special tools?

honestly to save you heart ache and money in the long run, i would pay to have them installed... i did my own on the d30 and my 8.8 and i messed up, even had a "compliant" guy help me but still muffed it up... but if you are dead set on doing it yourself check out these:

    http://www.richmondgear.com/01instructions.html
    http://www.drivetrain.com/ringpinioninstal.html

as a fan of doing everything myself... personally i would yield to the experts on this one. getting back lash dialed in is a PITA!!!!

my .02, but check out those links
96 ZJ swapped in 5.2, 242, 14bolt rear, big ugly home brew bumper, 7.5" of lift in the front 9" in the rear, long arms, hummer wheels with 37s... (dont worry front axle is next)

It should be heavy. Weight is a sign of reliability. If it doesn't work, you can always hit him with it.
