I have a 2000 WJ that has a 4.0L and a 242 t-case. I have been noticing alot of people on here and other jeep sites that have been switching from a 242 to a 231. I have done searches to find a post that will tell me why people are switching. I have yet to find one, so can someone please tell me why?
Compare strength numbers on this page:

Anyone know what year 231 I need to put in my WJ?
plus there's a lot more aftermarket support for 231 as far as things like 4:1 low range, SYE, 2L, etc.
I want to do this swap but I have no idea what year and what vehicle I need to find to get a NV231. Can anyone help me?
I think in 91 they changed the spline count from 21 to 23 so definately 91+. The trouble is there are many different gear cuts and shaft lengths. Search and your question will be answered.
why do you want to do this swap? if your wj is stock like your sig says i see absolutely no point in doing it--strength isn't a concern if you're on ~29 in. tires.
He has a 9" rear, HP44 front, and some 36's (I think?) going on.Originally Posted by RiPPiNiTuP7
Just like AP said, I will be putting a D44Hp and a 9" rear into my WJ with a Clayton 6" long arm kit.
this should help. i got this off of our local Jeep site.

blew another 231.
so as i'm creeping around the APJ yard, i see a 242 xj. hmm, i liked my AWD 249 is the snow, the 242 has that, plus everything the 231 has. sold.
but is it as strong with all the extra whirly gigs flying around inside of it? the answer is a resounding YES.
In fact, the 242 appears to be quite a bit stonger in a few areas.
The mainshaft thru the case is same diameter as the 231. so equal there. the 242 will fail the same at the tailshaft section like the 231 weak spot.
BUT, the chain gears are wayyy bigger, the chain is 1" wide, (231 is 7/8"), and check out the front output!! it's huge. as big as aftermarket d300/d20 outputs.
1.450" 32spline 242 vs 1.125" 26spline 231 front out put yoke.
242 assembly, 231 shafts. look at the difference in the size of the chain gears, and increased chain engagement. should really help "streched chain popping noise" of the 231.
this is a 231 front output shaft on top of the 242. the rusty brown gear compared to where the chain is on the 242 gear. quite a difference is diameter. It's important to note that strength increases are not linear with increase in diameter. ie: a twice as big diameter will be more than twice as strong.
i'll put up an over-all length comparo this evening, after i get the 231 out. but i've done it b4, they are the same within 1/4"
Got2bwj the problem with the 242 is that I cannot find a SYE kit anywhere. There are a lot of places that sell them for a 231. I will put in a D44HP front and a 9" rear with a true high 9 third member. Also Claytons 6" long arm kit and 36x13.50 Irok radials. I have to get new front and rear shafts with my build. So I was going to convert my slip yoke to a regular yoke. In a few years when I get the money I will be putting in an Atlas 4:1 kit.
I honestly see no point in swapping a working 242 out for a 231 unless you really want a 4.0:1 low range, twin stick and a SYE(a Dana 300 with a flip kit would be better), the only other reason I would swap my 242 for a 231 would be if my case was missing chunks of it. Tom Woods does have a SYE available for the 242, if Stinkoman would chime in on this he got his from Kevin's Off Road. I have aquired a NP242HD out of a Dodge Durango that was driven from PA to Disney and made it to exit 46 on I-95 in NC while out of fluid just burned up 2 bearings chain and gears still ok.

RobXJ just mentioned this too. Tom Woods has a 242 SYE kit. I put it on my WJ this summer. It is essentially a hack and tap kit, only TW's shop does the hacking and tapping. They send you a new mainshaft (shorter with a yoke) and a new tail housing.Originally Posted by AQHACowboy
Tom Wood's does not have the 242 kit anymore. The reason is that Jeep has stopped carrying the mainshaft and the rear cone for the NV242. Also people for some reason dont send back their stock parts after they put the TW kit in their 242's. So because of this TW is out of stock and has no idea when they will get more in. This is what Tim from TW told me 2 days ago.
Ok New Venture stopped making mainshafts for NP/NV 242's that is news to me. Considering it is still an option in the 07 KJ's.
that's weird, i just got my Tom woods 242 sye kit about 4 days ago. i know i'm sending my core back, probably going to split the case tomorrow.
Rob I will call Tom Wood's again this week and see what they say again. I am not sure if it is the main shaft or the tail housing that they cannot get anymore. As I talk to them if they tell me the same thing I will take notes. If you think the 242 is a better choice over the 231 swap I will stay with the 242.
One advantage the 231 can have over the 242 is clearance. There is a skid plate http://www.tntcustoms.com/webv5/zj_hcbellypan.asp that allows for this. The 231 HD might be a better option than a salvaged 231. You can get one all built w/ SYE for your particular vehicle for about the same price as doing it yourself. I got mine from http://www.jbconversions.com/pages/. I have had good luck w/ his customer service online. That is my $.02.Originally Posted by AQHACowboy
old thread I know...but Tom Woods does still have this kit. I recieved mine last week, and it was installed today. Stock shaft will be mailed back to him this week. I can't believe people wouldn't mail back the shaft, he charges a $400 core charge until you mail it back.
Anyway how is the build going? did you decide on a tcase yet?
I like my 231HD w/ SYE on my rig but I still want the 242HD i have in my garage to be put into my rig...just becuz it has ALL-time 4wheel drive.... too bad can't have the best of both world...Atlas II will be put in once I blow that 231.
And my 231 is out of a 2000 Dodge Durango.
