I was wondering if it was possible to swap the input shaft from an NV 249 to a 231 D, since the 231 I have has a different spline count and length than my 249.
the 249 case is a from my 95 ZJ, and the 231D is from a 2000 V6 5 speed Dakota
If the are the same gear cut, then yes.
I just swapped a input from a 88 231D into a 88 242AMC...
Mike
is there anyway I can find this out with out taking my 249 apart? I really don't want to take it apart and put it back togethor multiple times.
ha ha, i know its not hard, i took apart the 231, but right now the 231 is in a different state (at domination chassis), where i was going to do the swap, so i was trying to avoid that all togethor really.
anyone have any pics of the 249 input shaft? i've never even seen one to tell you the truth.
Well it looks a lot like the one that came out of your 231. The spline count probably is different, but it looks the same. I mean an input shaft is an input shaft...
There are tons of swap articles and tech about swapping in a 231 or 242. Lots of articles on input shafts and their specs. Most if not all have pictures.
Search.

I think 95 is when they changed the gear cut. Once you take the input out compare it to the 231. The gear cut change is very very small. At first glance you can't tell a difference.
I swapped in my late model gear cut with it's plannetaries into a early gear cut 231 and it roared any speed over 5mph. My article about swapping inputs: http://www.mallcrawlin.com/forum/sho...ht=input+shaft
It's long, but I learned a lot about gear cuts and input shafts.

Since this 231 is out of a 2000 Dakota does it still have the speedo drive on the tailshaft? Or did it change like the Jeeps to being taken off the tone ring signal?
it didn't have the speedo on the tail shaft, you can use an SYE kit for it from advanced adapters though like I did, its not listed as an application, but it works
