Alright finally out of boredom I am going to start a thread on here, there are more poser pics, wheeling, etc on my cardomain http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2128041

I got the jeep in the spring of 2005, I worked at carmax so I got first pick of the cars we bought going to the wholesale lot. I had my pic of all kinds of jeeps and my pricerange was anything under 4500. We bought this zj from a florida couple, it had an RV tow bar on the frontend(I am pretty sure most of its miles were behind and RV, and these people were snowbirds) and 91K on the odometer. Everything inside was pristine and all options worked (fully loaded), and the outside looked great except for the front fender being crumpled, and missing paint on the front fascia, it also had mismatched tires. No biggie. So i bought it for 3500 off our back lot.

Stock with Dana turdy and turdy5, 5.2, leather all the power shit minus a sunroof, etc etc...you all know what they look like

So a set of dunlop mud rovers, and a trip to a friends paint shop, and I thought I was hot shit
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_1_full.jpg

Next came the RE Budget Boost and a zacatal safari rack with some lights. It was pimpin' I hit the bolt on mods kinda hard.....(luckily I snapped out of it pretty fast)

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_2_full.jpg

So after that it stayed the same until I got my hands on steelies and 32's. Somewhere when I had the 30's I got a rad support for front tow points. I hacked up my front bumper, threw in a cb and thought I was set for a while

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_3_full.jpg

Well that was fun and all until I found a steal on some RE 3.5 springs, and around the same time I landed a deal to sell a Bianchi Liquigas (for you non-cyclists REAL expensive bike) for a friend, and I got to keep any profits I made, so I ordered a JKS trac bar and Discos, drilled my front TB, and was happy again for a few months. I also had a buddy fab me up some sliderz which have saved my ass tons of times since then, they are pure beef.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_7_full.jpg

Well after that I found another deal on an ARB that was up in PGH. So a night trip with a buddy after work, and an exhausting drive home and I was big pimpin with a painted to match ARB that was pristine. I also found a ramsey rep8000 on ebay for 300 and threw it in. I was unstoppable.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_15_full.jpg

Here's a nice pic of my sliders, note the missing front driveshaft....
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_16_full.jpg

Next it was off to Crozet, Virginia for my first real rock crawling taste (The trails in va have some decent obstacles, but mostly its mud and fireroads, leaves a lot to be desired.) Crozet was AWESOME. I learned a lot about the jeep, and wheeling in general. Also the week before I had started work on buildling my own rear bumper. I had picked up a free arc welder from a buddy, and I had an angle grinder and chop saw, and went to town. It wasn't quite finished for the run at crozet...oh well

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_52_full.jpg

So after crozet, I finished up my rear bumper and then it was Transfer case time, I had had enough of that 249 shit and I picked up an old 231 from an XJ for 75 bones.

That brought me up to this May. I sold the ARB because I was completely broke and about to leave for an internship for 3 months. I built my own front end...It turned out well but I plan on redoing it over xmas break this year.

But In may I went camping for Memorial Day (a week before I was supposed to leave for my job) and broke my front driveshaft...that was the last time I went wheeling.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_76_full.jpg

Now, somewhere in April I drove to BFE pennsylvania to pick up my 300 dollar 1988 waggy. front and rear 44's sweet. I just didn't have money to put them under and wanted to long arm it at the same time.

So we'll fast forward through my kickass internship this summer and its September, I still have my 2wd zj, but I have a 10 dollar xj shaft and a new yoke for the 30, I have the shaft lengthened, bolt the yoke up and what happens? Well this summer my passenger side hub froze up, and I don't know what happened, but I am pretty sure it lead to the downfall of my LP30.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_79_full.jpg

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2128000-2128999/2128041_80_full.jpg

So the rest of the story. That was one week before I was supposed to leave for OH for school (Transferred for Ranger services/LE). So I buckled down, ripped the axles out of the zj, and started getting perches built. Push comes to shove, I didn't think about steering enough and couldn't get the drag link to work out....Shit. So I stole the folk's ram1500 and left for Ohio. The most wheeling I have done since Memorial day was today when I popped it into 4wd to get out of the parking lot that was about a foot of mud from all the rain...unless you count taking the gov't vehicle up the hunting trails this summer..hahaha

So the ZJ is sitting in my garage presently, awaiting my return for thanksgiving, when I'll finish it up and get back to wheeling.

When I'm finished it will be on front and rear 44's, 35" BFG MTs, 4.88 gears with an aussie and a lockrite (found a damn good deal, just gotta get the cash together), and pending long arms next spring.

Here is the final pic from one of the nights we were up working on the jeep before i left.

Not really a big Zj update, but it gets my neck off the chopping block with the folks...

Ever since I bought my waggy for 300 bucks in March, It has been sitting in our driveway with no axles. While my dog loved it, the folks didn't, especially with me not really living there.

Well today, the great waggy moved on to greater places, along with my Turdy and Turdy5 strapped under it to get it on the trailer.

So long dear friend....

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/2320000-2320999/2320705_1_full.jpg

In zj related news, I ordered myself a new welding mask, an ebay special auto darkening, we'll see how it does.

I am also in the process of getting DOM and TREs for my one ton steering...the TREs are coming from PartsMikeparts One tons to fit the waggy taper.

I should also be ordering my Wheels this week, going with the US wheel 70 series with a custom BS

Then I'll be getting a lockrite and 4.88's as a package with master install kits for 516 delivered, seemed like a good price to me...

Other than a few other little parts, it should be able to all come together over my thanksgiving break when i return from OH to finish it up then drive it back here...and maybe be able to wheel

So here are some progress pics from the past two days. Things left to do:

fix the scaryness of the spring angles up front

mount up rear axle

fluid changes

steering alignment, and attatch drag link

bleed and then hook up new brakes

and I also have to take apart the drivers side hub, the rotor didn't seat properly.

Back to the Jeep...

Out of the garage officially.

At this point we had towed it out of the garage with my tractor just to get it out and clean up a bit. All that was left when the pics where taken was fix some spring angles and put brakes on (hence the dragging with the tractor), and attatch shocks.

The next day after this was taken I hooked up the shocks, brakes, etc, and adjusted control arms, then took it for a test drive. Drove great until the leverage of my taller UCA mounts in addition to a good sized bump caused the mount with the TB to rip off. Then the pinion swung down and broke the other mount. Now I will gusset it next time I am home and it will be officially finished. Felt great to drive it finally.

It was interesting getting the beast back home with the rear axle only attatched by LCA's. We ended up looping a tow strap around the rear bumper, then around the yoke (after jacking up the yoke to an acceptable angle) and then running it back to the rear bumper. and towing it backwards to my house.

Well here's the new scoop on my chitbox...

As of now I have a new DD, a 98 Chevy s10, 4x4, 5spd, vortec, extended cab

ZJ is out of the garage under its own power, and i have been flexing it out all day to play with the new suspension.

It still needs a good amount of alignment work, and a good brake bleed. then I gotta put a sway bar on it at some point.

I'll put some pics and poser shots up tommory.

you kids take it easy

all that is left is fabbing some sway bar brackets, and then setting my bump stops, and a good alignment

she'll be moving to Ohio in mid february at some point to be completed and put back on the road as a semi DD.

Well

in my infinite wisdom I decided short arms and 35's bring the ghey.

So, I am building my own long arms, I am going to follow kraqa's subrame idea using 4x6x.25

front will be a radius armed 3 link, and the rear will be a triangulated 4 link.

nothing fancy, with clayton's springs. i ordered most of the brackets from ballistic.

While I had time since I didn't have the subframe material, I decided to rip the bumper down and re do it. A little lower profile and I am adding a push bar.

teaser:

STOP your fabrication if you are not going to atleast half ass it correctly. BARE minimum would be an algegator cut in the tube like the new ding heads on "Trucks." The correct way would be using a hole saw with the same OD as your endrings. And on square tube this is a 2 minute cut. Do it right.

I'm doing it right, I'm having the lowers torched to fit the bushings, the uppers I did the alligator cut what I ment by notching it at the end, I should have done more on the radius arms, but there was plenty of contact.

yep, a flat washer, and the joint/or bushing. I tacked it, checked it again, then welded them in. They came out fitting very nicely.

Things left to do:

lengthen driveshafts/get a SYE possibly

correct pinion angles

shorten rear lowers to fix pinion

finish the front bumper, it's quite the hideous right now

mount shocks on front axle

mount sway bar endlinks

Overall Thoughts:

It sits WAAAAAAAAAy taller than I wanted. I am thinking I might just sell my 35's before I use them and go straight to 37's.

Discuss:

front shocks, where to put them, because of the way my radius arm mounts, using the stock upper location won't work because there is no way to mount them behind the coil, I am thinking move the upper location in front of the coil and mount tabs underneathe on the axle.

thoughts? better locations?

Your idea for mounting the shocks should work provided that they don't hang below the tube.
You should have sleveed the full lenght of the uni-frame imo.

Gotta bring my build back from the dead.

It went like this... peaceful drive to get lunch and pick up a free winch controller turned into my water pump douching all over the highway. I replaced said water pump (PITA) and jeep would not start. I run codes, it throws for CPS. I replace CPS (easy) and CKS (HUGE PITA). Jeep still does not run. I discover the distributor is not turning. I give up. This was three weeks ago.

So just now, I had the beast towed to a local shop that is good on jeeps where he is going to figure out what is wrong with my motor.

Assuming that it will run again, I have a lengthened front shaft to put in, and then I'm going to shake it down on a buddy's rock garden.

So over thanksgiving I got the jeep running again, It needed new plug wires, and a new coil wire. After that and a jump, it fired right up and sounds strong. I still need a new oil pressure gauge, I'm going to buy one of the manual ones next time I'm in Va.

I had it tearing around the property since I don't have insurance on it right now. Here are some of the posing pics, they don't differ much from the last ones but I felt accomplished, so fawk off.

I need limiting straps.

We also used it to push over some trees and pull them out of the woods. It is a beast.

I still need to do some final tuning on the alignment, I'm not sure whether I am getting some movement out of the rear 4 link, whether my front castor is off, or what is going on, but it is getting a lot of movement on the road, or so it seems.

im not planning on doing axles yet so im glad to hear the 135 was good to go for the rest. im doing radius arms front and rear. like RE or rustys arms. ive alread got adjustable short uppers so im just going to use those for the top section. im going to sleave the whole frame rail with 4x4 box with the top cut out and then do the sliders off of that. and im thinking about buying the TNT customs xmember/tcase skid cause its gnarly as hell. thinking about using RE superflex joints for the arms. debating on using round or square for the arms though...and what size for the tube or square stock. im not building a super hardcore rock rig but id like something tough. any recomendations?

straight up, it isn't, but bevel all the edges and you can get enough penetration. I did tripple passes on some of mine. As i said, no problems to date, i put mine together the first time two summers ago

3/16" should be just fine though, i kinda wish i'd used more 3/16" instead of 1/4", in a lot of places it's just overkill and lots of extra weight.

i made a vow to never use 1/4. its just way overkill. so many things will fail before 1/4 inch. weight is a big issue to me as well since mines still my dd. with a 3/16 sleeve the frame rail ends up being essentially 1/4 thick. cars with real frames are only 1/8. my buddys landrover LCA mounts are welded straight to the frame and i can promise they arent comming off and his frames 1/8.

I have a passenger seat that might change this philosophy.

1/4", 3/8", 1/2", and even 1" have their places on the trail, but you're correct in the fact that for many uses, the real issue is adequate support. You shouldn't rely on the thickness of a material to sustain a force that shouldn't be on it in the first place unless you have no means of supporting it mid-span (i.e. lower links). ...Well that's the idea at least, engineers please forgive the nontechnical or incorrect terms.

SuicideTireZJ
02-14-2008, 06:11 PM
ATL has a point. The shape of a material has a lot to do with how it reacts to stress. If you put a force on something that isn't designed to take it from that axis, it will break unless reinforced with something that IS designed to take it in that plane.

Good design and low weight > poor design and overkill components

That being said, 1/4 definitely does have a place in some critical areas, especially on those that are beaten hard. Some people use it WITH a good design just as more of a guarantee that it won't break.

Good luck with the trac bar mount and straightnening the frame rails. I guess I should run plate all the way up font to try and avoid this. Your build looks like what I want to do.

On the waggy 44 I didn't cut the diff at all on the drivers side. I used Ballistic brackets http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Flat-bottom-radius-arm-coil-mounts_p_32-1184.htm

to mount the front links/coils. As a result my coils sit a hair wide, but it isn't that noticeable. I did have a welding shop weld the the mounts to the axle since I wasn't confident in my 135t being able to get good enough penetration since the drivers side was right up against cast. Hopefully that is clear as mud. If I had it over to do I would get the coil/link bracket/shock mount from ballistic instead, and build a truss for my radius arms, finding a place to mount my front shocks was a PITA.

As for an update, I bought some angle and plate this today, plan on figuring out a way to stiffen up the front end and probably run a cross member to keep the unibody happy. Not sure how exactly I will do it yet though, I am playing with measurements and trying to find good pics of braces on PBB

It has been waaaaaaaaaay too long since I updated this.

Updates:

I fixed my track bar problem only to have it break 10x worse. My "frame rail" ended up having the bottom ripped off... so it was back to the drawing boards.

Between work, and classes going was extremely slow, and I decided to re do some of the smaller issues with my LA's since the build.

I am now running a single upper, and built a cross member to mount my track bar off of.

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j107/clickclickbamphh/newmount.jpg
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j107/clickclickbamphh/newmount2.jpg

I also found a full set of 3.5" springs and shocks at the local junk yard, and bought them. My junk will be sitting at a MUCH better height. Still on 35's, but about 4" lower than when I finished the build.

I should have it all completed by tommorow.

How did a pigeon manage to take a shit way under there?? :flipoff2:

Like the idea though, also keeps the diff out of the oil pan.

yeah, the pigeon was from my first attempt at striking an arc with a buzz box 2 years ago. should have ground them off, but we will see how this idea plays out.

I have stitch welded the bracket to the unibody, it has mounting plates to disperse the load on both ends, and I will probably also bolt it.

Today I got the front end finished welded and put it back under the heep. It is resting under its own weight for the first time in a few months.

This is with the "new" coils up front, and the 7" coils in the rear.

Since I haven't updated this in...forever, I figure I should put up the rest of my motorcar related accomplishments. I got a new dd, ram 1500, 360, auto, 4door, 4x4.

Then I went to recover a buddies jeep in it, and decided to play a bit myself... it is one wheel peel front and rear, and sadly, got stuck.

Tommorow after class I hope to get the rear end on the shorter coils, and start to get some of the details finished on the front end, such as adjusting track, and the length of the lowers... I still consider today a large improvement over sitting on jackstands.

By the way, in the picture, you can see my garage...or lack thereof. working on gravel brings the ghey.

Got a lot more work done on the zj today.

Got the "new" rear springs and shocks installed...

Then I lowered it down to see the new stance. It is starting to look a lot more like a jeep, and a lot less like a monster truck. It is about time.

I never posted about the limiting straps I built, the cost of both straps and brackets was the same as ordering a single strap from poly performance, so I am pleased.

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j107/clickclickbamphh/octoberjeepstraps.jpg

I bought trailer tie down straps from TSC, then welded a couple washers into the D ring of the strap. Then I put a bolt through the strap where I needed it to be length wise. They are held to the axle with a simple tab, and the same on the unibody. Total cost is just shy of 30 Bucks for tabs, straps, washers, and hardware. Not bad.

finally, a picture of the revamped front suspension

All that is left is getting the alignment set, fixing the track width, and some small work around the rest of the pile.

Looking good Will.

You may want to make some clamping plates to spread the stretching load over a larger area of the strap material. With the way you have it now, it may want to tear the strap around the bolt. I made some limit straps like those and they tore. Although yours may be thicker.
