Anyone have a technical reference to the purpose of hood insulation for anything other than sound dampening?

Is it safe to remove from a GC and not have to worry about the paint on the hood?

Took mine off when it started looking like pure shit. Haven't had any problems. Makes cleaning under the hood easier. :D

safe to remove

all XJ's come without hood insulation

supposedly the hood insulation will help in an engine fire, the plastic clips will melt and the fiberglass? sheet will fall down and smother the fire. internet BS or fact? you be the judge

The clips are designed to melt and the "blanket" is fire retardant and drops onto the engine to help smother fires.

I pulled my mud trap off years ago... it is supposed to supress a fire. My hood is a lot hotter now, but I also installed vents to aid in exhaust temps.

Mine had (emphasis on HAD) it, that's on a 1990 (laredo with all the options).

my '87 xj had it... ripped it out when it really water logged once. never had any problems.

i haven't gotten around to taking mine off the grand... but i saw a zj with the 5.2 where the engine heat had bubbled the paint on the hood... so i'm sort of holding off on ripping mine out.

Mine was removed from my 94 ZJ in 1995 or so. No ill effects yet.

I think its real purpose was to prevent the hood from looking like s*%t after years of hot service. Take a look at some older xj hoodz. I took it off with no issues.
