Looks that way but only the front one for apperence. All the rest are there. Clayton has a great way of doing them as well... he runs a drill through the hole and into the tube for a deeper penetrating weld.

And the tubes are fully welded all the way around using a jig that rotates so there are no starts or stops in the weld.

Thats a good point BUT, I have kids and the ZJ is perfect for packing ALL our crap and going where ever it may be. Hardcore is definded differently by everyone, so I have hardcore axles and a hardcore right foot matched with a 5.9 so these were needed. So far Ive killed my D30 counless times and my 8.8 once. All on 33"s mind you...

And now wanting to run some real meats I need to build axles that I can forget about and enjoy wheeling and less wrenching. I guess what Im saying is that its easier for me to spend the $$ rather than keep fixing weak links.

On another note... WHEN I roll my ZJ and its left to a pile of crap, I hope my axles will still have life and they will live on in somthing else... maybe a buggy or TJ whatever it maybe. Time will tell.

Yeah that is true AW.

I am just pissed at myself in a way for building a ZJ and not something cheaper and with a frame. I think I wouldn't be so far in debt at this point. I'm actually thinking of selling it to pay off some stuff, but I'd need to get at least 12-15k to not be getting rammed in the ass on the deal.

Oh, plus I hate you for spending like $6k on an axle haha.

You still run swaybars??

You guys are just trying to keep up with the Jones's. Jerod is building a D60 because he actually wheels and breaks his junk. There is nothing wrong with a HP30/8.8 combo depending on the wheeling you do. It has worked fine for me without any major breakage.

Don't consider going to full widths or some bling drivetrain just to look cool or to say "I've got dana 60s". Most of you guys don't wheel enough to break a D35.

Sweet axles. I just saw the glossy flyer from Clayton at GSW. The sticker shock was bad. My wife had a hard time with the $3,000 for the Currie high 9 for the rear. There was no way that I was going to sell the $6K for the Clayton's D60 front.

It will sure lighten your load when you don't have to carry any spare axles...:)

After building my own front 60 in a similar fashion to that Claytons front axle, the price does not surprise me at all. No I didn't pay that much, but with all the work / researh / parts hunting, is the only way mine came out cheaper... and it was a whole lot of work...

The iron cross looks awesome, but are you sure it provides enough lateral support high enough on that mount? I'd probably keep the clayts support as lame as it works, just less leverage against it at that angle.

Of course I'm the last person to be talking about UCA mounts right now....

AprilzWarrior
06-25-2006, 02:56 AM
I really doubt that the forces on THAT joint would be anymore than the opposite joint on top of the center section, since its all linked. Hence alot of other companies running just one upper anyway.

Oh and that UCA mount is 1/2" plate, without a gusset I dont think it would bend. So a small gusset or large gusset its all the same in that location IMO.

Whats up with your UCA ? I hear the hot item for UCA are WJ arms cut to fit a tube... I have like 10 WJ arms in my shop.

I think the customer that you'll get is probably somebody wanting to upgrade their stock axles. In many cases you can sell your upgraded axle(s) for $xxx plus you take your buyer's stock axle(s) in exchange. At least that's the way I did it when I upgraded with somebody that had the axles I wanted to buy. You'll at least come out ahead and you'll be rid of the axles that you know are not your first choice and still have a driveable rig while you decide/save for what you really want.

Yeah front 60's are a big ticket item.

Someone mentioned the plug welds, those are for the case spreader. You don't fill those up with weld or you can't use a case spreader.

It's cool to see some of the old guys on here. How time flies. It was eight years ago I started posting on the Grand Cherokee forum. Time flies!

I'd love to biuld a ZJ again but I can't even finish my buggy I started 2 years ago. Funny I started selling things to support my hobby and haven't even had a Jeep to wheel in two years. I still get out on runs mostly riding shot gun and spotting.

you knwo i agree with matt. TYhat iron cross doesn't give THAT much support considering the length of that bracket. 42's are a VERY large tire and with the wheel tired sieways and the gas on you'd be suprized what you can break. hell i broke a 1" allow rode between the jam nut and the tube insert on my upper arm in a bad situation. i knwo you will be running two uppers and that will make a huge difrence but if your goign to build it. i'd do it right the first time.

Also on my list are the RockCrusher Spindles and hubs... then get some Warn lock outs.

#1 you may never ever get your order with usa6x6, hears TOO much bad shit to even want to place an order.

#2 deans are 3/8" thick, thats the same thickness as our concrete trucks at my work

I too have heard that the flats are a no no, but have you seen any carnage ? And why ? Proper welding Id bet. I hella burned mine in, all the way around each part of the plate that comes into contact with the wheel.

I guess I am confused then. You mention 1/2" studs above and then mention a part number for 9/16 studs. So knowing that a rear 14b is OE 9/16" stud and depending on what year your custom front 60 was modeled after it could have 1/2" or 9/16".

1/2" High Steer Studs, and nuts.

The Wheel Studs are 9/16" in the 14bolt and D60.
I am running the exact same wheel studs in the 14 & 60

I know what you mean about the 1/2" wheel studs, thats what Clayton sent me, and had to send them back. Thats when I found the correct Dorman PN and got the right studs. FWIW, the 1/2" wheel studs are for 5 and 6 lug versions of the 60.

Early 60's used 1/2". 1980 and after used 9/16". Thanks for clearing up my confusions.

So what do you have left to do??

looks like just bolt up the axles, make some new driveshafts, plumb the brake lines, and mount some wheels and tires.

Driver side installed...
http://fototime.com/DD8FCD5BDC2FBE1/standard.jpg

Driver spindle and caliper mount installed.
http://fototime.com/AAE77104B1027C8/standard.jpg

Driver Hub etc installed... but ran into a blip... looks like I need to do the infamous race swap in the hub... the stub shaft is 1/8" too long and the race would push the hub out 1.8" more, allowing the lockouts to seal tighly to the hub. So it needs to all come back apart! :smt103
oh and I think I have the wrong rotors, little large.

Turns out this is going to be a simple fix.

I was sent the wrong caliper bracket, that fixs the rotor/caliper issue. Then I also picked up the race and seal to swap out in the hub.

by saturday I should have it torn down and replaced.

Came out pretty strong IMO, left lots of strong ribbing.

Nope... been hella busy. Building a bathroom in the shop project, family birthdays, STILL no passenger inner shaft (said I will have it this week Dec4-8) and Im working on getting an XJ for a DD. Oh and my Alternator is acting up, so a Powermaster should be here any day.

I did get my brakelines last week, those are just sweet www.xtremecrawlers.com (http://www.xtremecrawlers.com) is the vendor.

Sorry no pics yet, I still not done with the bathroom either, almost though!

I am in the same spot, all my extra money though right now is going to support the rock crawling teams I am working with, then the Jeep nightmare project.

I think after all the problems you are having with the front 60 I may just break down and buy a COMPLETE HP60, from Clayton, Dynatrac, Currie, etc. Yea it will cost more, but it will all come in one box and I could then just bolt it in.

Who knows I am going to focus on the 14b first then see where I am on the 60.

Hang in there man, one of these days you will get the 60 finished.
