Ok after some problems over this weekend I've decided to say screw a cheap beater pick up, I'm gonna get something that can tow my junk around a be a DD also.
So looking at a used 3/4 ton pick up from one of the big 3. It's gotta be Diesel and a 4 door.
I'm sorta a Dodge guy, I like the Rams with the Cummins. But I'm open to Chevy or Ford too.

Looking to spend around 20-25k on a used 98 and up truck. Most I'm coming across have high mileage, is that bad?

for 20-25k you should be getting low mileage ones.

98 had both the 12 valve (98) and the 24 valve engines (98.5)

if i was you id stick w/ the 12 valve... it will save on $$ and no computer stuff to really go wrong. plus you can make a few free mods to it for cheap to make it get out of its own way.

24v's are nice but there is a '53 block' issue with the first couple years of the 24v's that is not very re-assuring. check out that here --- > cumminsdatabase.com

and i was looking at this 96 4x4 w/ 210k for $8,200.

for 20k you should be able to get a very nice truck, make sure to buy it from a private seller tho, stealerships really take you on the diesels.

If you go with the 24V Id be lookin at the 01's-02's with a 6 speed. In the days where I could drive a stick I was able to pick up a 02 with 68k on it for 22k. Had no problems and had it chipped with injectors, 5" stright, clutch and it ripped and towed like there was no tommrow and when not towing it was still gettin like 20-24 mpg.

Dunno how you feel about fords but I did not like mine at all. Had the 6.0 which I thought was junk, it was chipped with a 4" stright pipe and smoked the top end.......twice and got like 11 mpg

If you get a Ford, find one with the 7.3L. The 6.0 is having way too many problems at this point.

12v vs 24v...

The 12v trucks are easier to work on. Also they use a P7100 injection pump which is is veggie oil compatable if you ever want to to that. They do have a lower stock HP and torque, but with a few mods that can be fixed.

The 24v is a nice motor too. The earlier ones are louder than the 12v, the lift pumps are prone to dying and taking out the VP44 injection pump (about $1000).

As for your price, you should be able to find an early 2000s truck without much trouble for what your looking to spend.

I would look at a 5/6 speed, I think you will be happier. To make the auto hold power, you need to dump some serious $$ into them. Then again the stock clutch won't last long with some power. Stock clutch is $1000, not sure what good clutches cost.

tdr1.com is an awesome source for the Cummins pickup. dieselplace.com for Chevy/GMC, and I'm not sure where the Ford guys are.

Just install a fuel pressure gauge so that you know that your lifter pump is going south and you can prevent the VP44 issue. It's not hard to hook up the gauge because there's a factory installed schrader valve to attach the line to. What happens is the lifter pump goes south and the VP44 has to draft fuel. The VP44 gets it's lubrication from the fuel itself and when having to draft due to the lifter pump failing, it does not get the proper lubrication and will eventually fail.

Nate's right, TDR all the way for a great Dodge/Cummins forum.

I will give you my 03 Dmax Crew Cab shortbox for 25k. I just ran into a wad of cash and would like to get rid of the 03 and buy a 06 CC Dmax DUALLY.

Let me know if your seriously looking. Price is negotiable ofcoarse.

Look for a daily but don't think I can swing a tow rig yet.

I know Canadian_driver wants something though.

so you're getting a daily driver, a D300, building longarms, building a cage, converting to a 5 speed, making a laptop mount, making cutout rockers, swapping in beefier axles, and building bumpers?

get to work! :flipoff2:

Hmm.... How about a daily driver/tow rig? :D

My truck (98 Ram CTD) is my daily driver. I do drive the Jeep to work once in a while. Haven't all summer though.

No comment. I`ll be working on stuff soon since the Heep is being parked.

I want a truck but I don`t have anywhere to park it.
