i think it was 95 that the grills went from 8 slots to 7 slots
just wondering, or it could be a noob question

It looked a little funny to me being it was the only thing crome on the rig

I dont have any pics of the bed right now but i plan on dove tailing the rear so it is just a temp fix

I couldn't stand my chrome grill either so I just sanded and painted it black.
I like how you cut it up so much, but have a bug deflector on the front. :smt081

Don't meen to bother ya, but do you have some pics of the front end fab work, trying to make my 79 hp44 front work with my clayton's kit. Last ditch effort before using the fawking ford radius arms which dosen't justify me spending the cheese on the claytons. Just wanted to see hw you made that shit work. Kick ass ZJ, keep the good work up.

The bug deflector was on it when i baught it so i figured it would get riped off but it is still holding strong.

As for the front axle I welded my mounts to the cast wedge's then welded the top control arm mount to the diff.

I would buy the proper brackets if I was you.

I have gotten pretty good with welding to cast with a mig ( )

Well the old lady is skeered i just bought a pack of sawzall blades.

Not to much happening latley.

Went to tellico a little while back and broke a bunch of shit.

here's the list

4 44 front shafts

9" carrier and driver side axle shaft

steering gear box shaft the one connected to the pitman arm.
and some other little shit.

This is kind of how it went in tellico. Started the day off by going up to gaurd rail broke a 44 front shaft at the top but was still able to drive up.
then we headed up to helicopter pad was able to make it up the ledge with three wheel drive. then right at the top i got a good bounce and bam there goes a 9" shaft. well no one had a shaft and the carrier was messed up good so we had to leave it over night. That was fun seeing as we stripped the tires winch and tools from it and dropped it on the ground. The following day we got a carrier and shfts but the shaft was to long. so i cut the splines off and shaved the end of the shaft so it would fit in the carrier so we could bring it down.
Now i have one wheel drive in the front and the u joint is taking a shit.
we turned it around and started down the mountian everything was going good till i got past gaurd rail and hit two big rocks dead on and rear came off the ground and bamm the goes the steering gear box shaft.

Well at this point i want to set the bitch on fire and call it a day.
My friend Shane saw in a magazine where they used snatch blocks and a winch to make a steering setup.

I't took a while but we were able to use 4 snatch blocks and 20' of syn winch rope. I am tryong to get pictures from a friend to show you all.

They way it worked was spool in to go left and spool out to go right.
It was a slow ride back to camp but it made it.

When i got home i made it road worthy and have not done anything else.

plans are now to get cromo shafts.

Plus cut off the rest of the bed and re do the whole front to shorten that up and drop more weight.

Sweet rig

You ever near Daytona at all? I go to college there (am actually there now, but am leaving in a few days...will be back again on the 26th), and i fly to Gainesville airport by the drag strip from time to time. Would be cool to check your rig out sometime.

Here are a few pics nothing special

http://s104.photobucket.com/albums/m183/MICHEAL764/

Man summer sucks in the south. It's to fucking hot to get anything done.

I redid the way my rear shocks mount but I need new shocks with more travel. So i will put that on the list of shit to buy. It's never ending.:D

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m183/MICHEAL764/1.jpg

Also been Itching to cut up the rear but i dd my rig so i have to wait to get some time off. Also thinking on moving the gas tank up and putting it where the rear seats use to be.

Love the sawzall
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m183/MICHEAL764/SAWZALL3.jpg
Righ now i am clearing all all the shit out of the way that i dont need.

So i can push the winch back next to the radiator and move the sting back for a better aproach angel. the front was sticking out way to far.

I should be able to move the whole setup back about 8-10" and make a nice tight fit.

I could not beleave how much mud was in the rad when i cut the front cross member off no wonder the thing is running warmer

NAFTEL
11-01-2006, 11:04 AM
yeah you should think about relocating that rad to someplace in the bed like mud racers do.

That would be sweet. Run a Taurus electric fan and mount it all in the back.

Mike I got some prices on those 44 shafts with Super Joints. I priced out a Waggy 44 set and it came to 515 shipped. Thought I'd let you know since I know you were looking for a set for your 44. I'm sure the shafts for yours would be around the same price as the Waggy 44s.

Im going to try and make it to gsse next year. I wanted to go this year but went to tellico in june and had a crappy time and broke allot of shit and lost the ambition to fix it for a while.

Im still working on the front bumper but it is nice having the clearence.

A few pics of shit that has been done

the tabs i made to fit the 88 cherokee frond calipers and bracket they mount to
http://gator4x4.com/forum/modules/gallery/albums/album02/BRAKE5.jpg
then it was bolt up for the most part
http://gator4x4.com/forum/modules/gallery/albums/album02/BRAKE3.jpg
http://gator4x4.com/forum/modules/gallery/albums/album02/BRAKE1.jpg

I used suzuki sidekick four door rotars they are a nice tight fit for the 9" 5 on 5.5 bolt circle and no changes needed to be made to the axle or the rotar
http://gator4x4.com/forum/modules/gallery/albums/album02/BRAKE2.jpg
in the last pic the caliper is just sitting on the rotar but it was a tight fit to make work. There is only about the width of cardboard between the rotar and caliper and bout a .25" between rim and caliper.

after i got that all to work i added alloy usa axle shafts all the way around.

now that all that is out of the way i plan to move the gas tank and take about 2.5' off the rear.

sawzall has been calling me:eek:

o and before any one ask about the spring perch on the axle that shit is coming off. I got a set from btf works. Just have to get off my lazy ass and do it.

Also found out Mile marker hubs dont hold up to 37" tires and alloy shafts

CurtP
03-20-2007, 10:06 PM
Interesting. Why did you use a bolt-centric non-vented rotor for this setup? I can't see that being a good idea with 37" tires or with the weight of the vehicle. I'd be worried about the piston of the caliper, which was made for a considerably thicker rotor, being too far out of the bore; especially when the pads wear down. The caliper mounting brackets look a little thin too, IMO.

MUDDTRACKS
03-20-2007, 10:18 PM
the tabs are .25 think plenty strong the piston is long enuf i checked that before i started and the non vented rotors are working just fine have been on for over a month now and no problems.

I drive it everyday most of the time with a trailer behind it with around 600-1000 pounds and it stops great when loaded down it stops even better with the added weight.

Hey man, Any pointers or close ups of how you did the truck bed, the original one that is? I was thinking of doing the same thing and wanted to know how you tied everything in. Did you use the rear door glass for behind the drivers door and the upper part of the tailgate to close off the cab?

RocKZJ

MUDDTRACKS
09-17-2007, 09:41 PM
i did use the glass from the rear doors just swapped sidesso they whould fit a little better then move the hatch forward and used 16ga sheetmetal to close it in. I welded the rear doors in place and used the dom from the cage to run sapports up into the cab from the rear. When i cut the roof free you could lift up on the rear bumper and close the gap between the rear doors and rear quarter panels it was kind of funny

I was going to put the nv 3550 in but why change it up right now the aw-4 with the aw-shifer works great. So that is on the back burner till i blow the bitch up

Let's see I think a dove nose and finish up the sheet metal in the rear plus make some new skids under the zj are in order. Im thinking for the skids i want a full belly skid.

Then i want to move the battery to the back and add the another yellow top with it. I have 1o wire, extra yellow top and battery diconect's already just need a few inline fuses

Got a 2001 tj intake manifold to put in.

Need to change out the rear spring with some stock xj front springs so it's not so stiff in the rear and make it so the coils are locked in place. Tired of them falling out.

Also want to redo my exhust so it runs all the way back. The drone is really starting to get to me when im all hung over trail riding.
Almost forgot I want to ditch stock headlights for xj lights.

Plan is to have it all done by march for a few jeep events.
That way all the bugs will be worked out before gsse.

Not to mention I would like to run in a few mud truck races this year. Not realy a race just have to match your times accross a 200 foot mud drag. who ever gets the best matched time wins the pot. Best pot i have seen was 1500.oo Not to bad for 2 trips down the strip.

When you replaced the 42re with the AW4 did you solve the problem of the CEL coming on, or just ignore it? I ask because I'm trying to put one in mine but I can't pass smog with a CEL on.

MUDDTRACKS
02-06-2008, 07:17 AM
no smog here but last time i checked i hade around 15 codes tripped probly more now been a year sence the last time i ran codes. So yeah I put the sticker that came with a lockright (warning this veh.) over the light. :D

when they do smog do the check codes? or just look for the light to come on and off? If so why not just wire the light to another dash light that comes on in the same sence. problem solved.

02-06-2008, 12:41 PM
Here in California they check codes, put a sniffer up the tail pipe and if you live in a heavily populated area even put your vehicle on a dyno as part of the smog check. The last time I had it done about a year ago the battery had died the night before and I didn't think anything of it. They did the whole test just to tell me at the end that I failed because my computer was storing a code that it hadn't relearned the engine yet, so I had to pay to do it all over again in a week.

Old jack started this one night. came to the shop lit up :smt030 dropped a new blade in the saw and cut the driver corner out. then it sat for 2 weeks.:smt069

I found a crack in the uni-frame about 5" long between the steering gear and track bar mount so i will be sleeving it and running brace acroos to the passenger side. then tubing most of the front. I want to tube around the windshield but dont want the whole exo.

It's real nice having a shop now. can work on the bucket when ever i want instead of when weather is good or during daylight hours.

On a side note the front windsheild is pretty much done so I decided it's time for the roof, windshield and back hatch to head to the scrap yard. Then hope to clean up a lot of loose ends on the rig making it look cleaner and not so thrown together.

I really hope to take away the look of a toyota. Gets old when people ask is that a toyota.

And it begins :) got the roof off and started on taking the hatch out from the center of the rig but i have to rework how i have my gas tank mounted. The roof is rather heavy with the sunroof. The jeep raised up at least a 1/2-1 inch

Yay! :D

Are you just going to cut out the cage to give yourself more head room? Or are you just going to add tube to the existing structure?

MUDDTRACKS

Just add tube ther is plenty of head room. When i swapped out the seats I set them as low as i could for added head room.

That's pretty sweet. Are you gonna need to cut tube if you need to pull the engine? Or should it be able to squeeze through there?

MUDDTRACKS
07-11-2013, 09:37 AM
Its a xj fan. It works ok but it needs to be a bit bigger i can go as large as a 16-17" fan. It runs about 210 on the trail. before the swap i always ran at 190.

As for the engine It will be fun to get out but will slide out the top.
