Ok well I got my jeep...about 2 years ago from my dad. It's my first vehicle, and he thought it was about time for another jeep (hes a forester, beats his jeeps lol). It had ??? miles on it when I got it, but it has 184k now on the original everything. Anyways i started out lookin around jeepforum and stuff, got interested in offroading, as well as my sisters fiance is a hardcore yota guy so...getting teh bug from 2 sides at once. For my first lift I searched around for a while, and decided on the 4" shot arm by RockKrawler about a year ago. My decision was based alot on price, as my parents were paying for some of it and had a word in what I would be getting. Anyways, I got 285/75R16 MTR's to go with my new lift. In a weekend i got everything apart, and my new lift in yay! Lots of rubbing at first, tore the linings out of both my wheelwells and both teh pumps out of my washer fluid reservoir. Anyways, I still ahve the bug, Im taking a welding class and my brother in law is a very experienced welder...and now im looking at custom long arms and 35s. Ive been out on the 'con once, going out to moab this summer, and do generla wheeling whenever I can. Without further ado, here are lots of pics.

Uncles ranch, fun shot.

I think i dropped REALLY hard on the front of my slider...or it was like this i dont know. Either way new sliders coming soon (with LAs)

Notice the rest of the rocker...no smooth section lol (all that damage is from when my dad had it)

Some new additions. Replaced my bent tie rod (and ends) So I now have a trail spare. Also did a LOT of work on my bumper, though it still isnt complete yet its lookin alot better.

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/bumper/DSC02196.JPG

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/bumper/DSC02197.JPG

The images make the bumper look wider than shit. Don't worry, it isnt. It only extends about an inch wider than the fenders on each side.

Also today I was over at my brother in laws with his hydraulic/pneumatic tube bender....so nice. Anyways I got some tube bent up to widen my sliders appx 5". They were tucked in way too close to the body before, buddies couldnt stand on it in off camber situation, and the body hit first in every situation but vertical contact.

Gonna run tubes from the bumpers to the sliders?!? Then cut off the fenders to wide them out;)?;)

Have you added gussets behind the bumper on the new sections you added or are they going to crush the first time they hit rock?

AgitatedPancake
02-17-2007, 11:13 PM
up until the first bend it is already very sturdy. I am going to run another triangle out to the furthest outside bend, and also the top of the new section is going to have some 3/8ths inch plate welded to it for most of its strength. Its going to be very durable. Also, I dont know if i told you of my idea, but running tubes from bumper to sliders is exactly what I intend to do...when I get around to it =P

ArloGuthroJeep

Nope, didn't tell me but in my vicodin enduced state, it made sense when I saw the extended bumper AND you said you're extending your sliders...

Alright, got the real stuff going on now. This is going to be a speedy version up till now.

Pulled a D44 from an '81 full sized Cherokee. 64.5" WMS to WMS, perfect.

Got it home (OMG its hard to move a fully assembled one of these bitches on your own)

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSC02360.jpg

Insides, I couldn't have gotten luckier:

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSC02367.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSC02368.jpg

Basically from there I got it all stripped down, all the paint off (this is semi-clean, but paint still on:

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSC02375.jpg

I got some 4.56's to install in it, heres a quick summary of how it went:

First Pattern - Pinion too shallow, pinion preload too high:

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN2953.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN2954.jpg

Second Pattern - Great pattern, preload good, too little backlash:

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN2961.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN2962.jpg

Third pattern - Backlash within spec, pinion too deep

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN2966.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN2967.jpg

Almost ruined the gearset because of metal shavings on the pinion threads-

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN2968.jpg

Final setup - Pattern OK, everything within spec.

Got all the brackets welded on except TB, modified the draglink to fit the current WJ TRE's, now I have to shorten it a few inches (I couldn't have shortened the section I put on) What I'm going to do is cut about 3" out and grind both ends into like a cone-shape, so I can have weld all teh way through instead of just a butt weld. Then sleeve it and weld up the sleeve.

Would you guys have any problems running this? (Below): 4 holes drilled for spot welds, then welded the end as well.

How do you like them LCA brackets coil buckets? any pics with the coils on/in.

sucks on the break line. :(

AgitatedPancake
07-03-2007, 05:08 AM
actually they are pretty damn versatile (sp). I really like how they turned out. I bolted them to the arms, then tack welded them all to the axle tubes exactly how I wanted
took the axle back out and burned 'em home. I also like the shock mounts as well. Everything turned out pretty damn well.

The brake line issue, was just a problem waiting to happen. I was using the stock d30 brake lines, which include the hard line and bends for that caliper, so the bends were all sorts of wierd.

I can get pics tomorrow, the jeep isnt actually at home right now =P

What'd you do for the draglink ? Is it just far from paralell with the trackbar now ?

AgitatedPancake
07-03-2007, 03:18 PM
the drag link and track bar are perfect, but for some reason I'm still getting some wierd bump steer symptoms but NO DW symptoms at all.

Post #20 is my drag link. That was to lengthen it and to make it use the correct TRE.

AgitatedPancake
07-03-2007, 06:35 PM
boom

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN2998.jpg

Ok now heres something that has me stumped. I have bump steer with the new axle. When i hit potholes with one side or the other I dont notice it much, but when both sides cycle in unison I get it. The kicker? Track bar and drag link are angled basically perfectly and are basically the same length...

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN2999.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN3000.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN3001.jpg

Then heres the brake line. Let me tell you, its goddamn interesting only driving home with 1 front brake. The way I got it home (and have had to on one other occasion, years ago) was put long coarse screw into the brake line, and hose clamp it a couple of times. I took back streets home, but it honestly does a good job at stopping the fluid.

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN3002.jpg

And here is the spring and perch as requested. The spring perches are actually lined up pretty well, but the spring has a slight bow because of how its clamped to the lower perch.

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/frontaxle/DSCN3021.jpg

Rear shocks to be inboarded/triangulated soon, WAY limiting flex. The rear was touching, but I could actually lift if off the ground (anyone remember the hummer vid? haha)

so I have one little problem right now. I'm going to be inboarding/triangulating the rear shocks, but as of right now my ebrake cables are JUST starting to get a little tight for my liking (as you can see in the last pic, but there isnt much pressure on them there). Where can I get longer cables, or what can I do about it?

hmm it's been a while since ive touched this thread. Short recap:

Old engine comes out:

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/engine/DSC02941.jpg

New engine goes in:

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/engine/DSC02942.jpg

Then the new engine had to come BACK out because the guys who built it didnt tighten down the cam gear bolts so one of them spun. No internal damage. Got it fixed and back together, have over 2k miles on it now, the swap was completed about 2.5 weeks ago I'd guess?

Other then that? I made some upper coil retainers today, the d44 was dropping the front coils every time i flexed out =P

Tore the sh*t out of the WJ on my last rubicon run. Bent the piss out of my tie rod, broke my drag link, blew a brake line and smashed a rear axleside LCA mount. Because I destroyed my steering so bad, I decided it was upgrade time. 1 ton crossover high steer time!

Christmas came early today =D

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/steering/DSCN3214.JPG

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/steering/DSCN3216.JPG

The way the JKS track bar bends towards the front of the truck makes it and the tierod hit hard when flexing, so to make it alrightish i dropped my rock krawler track bar back in as it bends are only on the vertical plane. It's about 2" too short but flex's nice now. The RK bar and JKS bar are same OD, I want to see if i can get the RK bar tapped to receive the JKS bushing end as its longer.

Did a rubicon run this weekend with a little damage, only thing that happened was i slipped a bead and bent a wheel (and of course the body damage =P).

AgitatedPancake
09-04-2008, 06:03 PM
1.5" .250 wall BEEF =D. So far its all holdin up well, slightly interesting drive with the trackbar to draglink angle but tracks straight as hell.

*EDIT* Also forgot to mention, the guy who sold me the knuckles said they were the chevy 1 ton blah blah. Well the smaller 3 ends from the pic above (2 ES2234R's and 1 ES2010L) were too small for the knuckles, but the top one (ES2027L) had the right diameter in the taper, so I ended up returning the ES2234R's, and the ES2010L for 1 more ES2027L and 2 ES2026R's as they are the larger diameter higher angle ends that fit my knuckles. I found it quite odd, the 2026 and 2027 were some of the cheapest of the group, yet they are stronger (the stud doesnt pinch where it hits the main body), and they are higher angle. Anyways i'm not complaining, now my tie rod and drag link use identical TRE's so thats a bonus.

yeah, on the rubicon a couple of my buddies were fuckin around and one of them snapped the ears of a yoke on his rear DS, and because I was behind him, when he got stuck I was the one who got to molest his truck off the trail =P

AgitatedPancake
12-05-2008, 05:56 AM
well I've been putting a crapton of work into the jeep lately, new bushings in all the claytons lowers (holy hell what a goddamn PITA), new wheel bearings on both sides in rear, pulled tranny pan to fix leak, installed a drain plug and temp sensor (Avg seems 180, highest ive seen is 190...sound normal for a pan reading? seems cool) replaced the waterpump.

Still on my list of things to do:
-Push the front axle forward 1-2" so the SSR's clear the wheel wells while flexed and turning,
-242HD tcase. It will be gettin rid of my front DS vibes so I can keep my caster in check, and the case itself is supposudly longer than the 247 so I want to see if I can get the slip yoke from a 242 case and replace the slip yoke on the 247 driveshaft (different spline counts). If the u-joints are the same size, it should let me push the rear axle back a bit.
-Truss + skid rear axle
-cut out tire well and raise tank
-inboard rear shocks (but keep them near vertical)
-rebuild slider mounts
-add support to outer parts of front bumper
-build rear bumper

Yeah...should keep me busy for a while.

so I picked up my 242 tcase today for 200 bucks, not bad I don't think considering the local yards want 750-800 for them . I just had to make a trip down to stockton for it. I'm lookin at getting a DS tomorrow, so *hopefully* I can get it thrown in. After that I may chop out the rear wheel well, we will see how the progress goes.

You didn't trim the rear yet ? Are you running extended bump stops at all out back ?

Just order a new one and save yourself the hassle of the used junk, for the small difference in price its worth it.

stock bumpstops in the rear, though I will be throwing some in sometime though.

The only wear item on a DS I'm worried about are the u-joints, remember out here in ca we don't get much rust so used stuff is nice to work with =D

Speaking of that, I just got done putting new joints in a shaft I picked up from a local junkyard in swap for some spare parts, sweet. I was planning on doing the tcase today to, but I didn't feel like it after the joints were being a PITA (I have a broken vice right now =/)

well I got the 242HD thrown in today, all in all it went pretty easy, took 4 hours but a friend was helping, but doing things slower than me (frustrating =/). Probably could do it in 3 on my own. With the 44 now nothing in my front end moves in 2wd, its nice knowing if I break something I don't have a replacement for in the front I can disengage everything and still drive with it. Gotta tune the rear DS angle a little bit, and in the next couple days I'm planning on pushing the front axle forward 1 1/2 or 2", and the rear back an inch. I have a few pics, I'll throw em up.

AgitatedPancake

Well, I got to test the 242 on the freeway, smooth as a butter. I have a hardcore tire shake comin out of the rear at freeway speeds that's pretty damn annoying, but then again the 2 swampers on the back weren't worn even and none are balanced so yeah.

I pushed the front axle forward about an inch maybe inch and a half yesterday, at the same time I fixed my caster for driveability. The caster makes the steering MUCH nicer but I haven't flexed it out yet to test clearance. I still havent fixed the wallowed out track bar holes yet though, really need to get on it.

It was pretty shitty, but I got the job done with my cousins help in 2 days, taking our time. I got a new blend door assembly and recirc door assembly when I did it and swapped them in without issue. I found out once I had everything back together that I have the blend door motors on the wrong sides or atleast the wires swapped. Its actually pretty funny. Not only do the left knobs control the right side and vice versa, but because the motors have to rotate different ways for each side, hot is now cold and cold is now hot. To turn up the heat on the drivers side, I have to turn the pass side knob down hahaha.

While it was apart I also soldered the blower motor resistor wires to the resistor pack eliminating that connection as mine was melted and only worked half the time. Now I have consistant heat WOOO!

Also went on a snow camping trip saturday, it was PIMP. It just HAPPENED to line up with the biggest full moon of the year which lead to a spectacular view and an awesome night. No lights were needed at night at all.

Ok so some guy in a yota came up to our camp side from part of the road we hadn't been on yet and said there was a dodge stuck down the road like 1/4 mile (random person, dodge ram with open diffs and mud tires) and was wondering if we could help this guy, but there was no where to turn around. We accepted, and proceeded to back down the road about TWO MILES to this dodge that was stuck GOOD. We daisy chained 5 trucks together but still couldnt get enough traction to pull this guy out. he was up to his frame in icy snow and didn't know what he was doing. After atleast 2 hours of trying to get him out we gave up and headed back to camp as he and the girl he was with decided they were going to sleep in the truck (as it was night by the time we left). Lets jsut say not hte smartest people but we couldnt convince them otherwise. No pics while we were down there, but heres a pic of us backing down the trail with an awesome moon.

Thanks guys, the jeep is getting some treats soon. My dad has been looking into replacing his WJ for a while now, and earlier this week he lost all compression in one cylinder of his 4.7 HO (even if you add oil), so he's getting himself a used one. He is letting me swap parts off my WJ as long as it doesnt look like a junker afterwards.

I'm taking his rear glass as a saw fell across mine and severed my defroster lines, as well as one is broken off the window. I get his gas tank and heavy duty skid (3/16" compared to the 1/16" tin foil im running now). I'm also swapping both his front seats as they arent broken, arent worn through, and IF i get lucky I can get his seat heaters working. Also I get to swap his transmission (PIMPIN, like 50k on it and mine is sluggish). i'm also looking at taking his lower mileage alternator as mine has 220 something k miles on it, and I believe his is a higher output (not sure though). Also taking one of his AC lines as I blew one a while ago. I'm getting hooked up hardcore in this whole deal and I'm pumped.

Alright so as some of you know I've been doing work on my gas tank (http://www.mallcrawlin.com/forum//showthread.php?t=18480), stealing my dads skid, and popping the dents outta my tank, well I took it to the next step because I was already so far along. I chopped the rear wheel well out this morning, and now I'm looking into raising the tank higher than most people go.

Heres a recap of what I've done so far.

Nice tank, looks a little squished:

But where I am sitting right now, the tank actually fits between the frame rails, I'm going to have to see if I can manipulate the skid to fit in there also. Then all I have to do is redo the in-cab "dent" if you will for the filler neck hoses.
Tank in:

Alright I took these pics to kinda think out loud.

Here it is from the inside currently strapped between the frame rails

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/dscn3343.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/dscn3344.jpg

If I go with it this high (as high as I can get it without interfering with a flat floor), I would have to cut out the indentation for the filler hoses, and create a similar design that goes in more to cover the hoses, or maybe I can chop it off in a nice fasion, and use the factory peice inboarded with some sides for it.

Also, I've decided it's about time for me to do the rear bumper as I was waiting to raise the tank so I didn't waste space in the long run. My idea right now is to use the factory hitch, but chop the center section out, rotate it 180* so the receiver is on top, weld/fishplate it back together and cut the sheetmetal in the crumple zone to acommodate it, then build a bumper off of that. I think I could make a really nice looking plate bumper off of it, and it would be small as it doesnt have to go down to cover the gas tank anymore. Opinions?

Example: cut at the white lines, flip center over and reweld w/fishplates
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/dscn3345.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/dscn3346.jpg

This is how the hitch is now:
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/ssrs/dscn3264.JPG

You can see if I flipped the center it would tuck up into the crumple zone but have really nice clearance and the good beginnings for a bumper.

rradford9

So are you raising it up enough that you need to drill a hole through the unibody to route the filler hose?

Yeah.

I'd just lower it a little to use the factory filler, its still going to be way out of the way.

Ken L
01-18-2009, 09:38 PM
regarding your hitch, why don't you cut at the mounting bracket and flip the brackets? I'm thinking that would be stronger.

Or just build the bumper and incorporate the hitch into it without using any of the factory stuff. That's what I did with my ZJ.

AgitatedPancake
01-18-2009, 09:44 PM
I'd just lower it a little to use the factory filler, its still going to be way out of the way.

Yeah but if I can manage to do it this way and flip the hitch, there will be nothing hanging down at all back there, in fact the hitch would be the lowest part of the truck which makes it perfect for a bumper.

Ken, flipping @ the brackets is a good idea, I may do that instead. I think the hitch would be strong enough with some decent reinforcement for lateral blows and tugs. I was thinking of having a 3/16 skin with 1/8" runners on the inside going back to the hitch, then putting some gussets in the hitch mounts for the side strength.

goldensd
01-19-2009, 01:18 AM
It would be best to cut at the brackets and flip them. Also, I don't know about the WJ's, but on my ZJ I also moved the crossbar back a bit on the brackets, so that it didn't hang past the rear end quite as far This is the way I built mine, and yes, the hitch makes a great base to build the bumper off of.

And I don't think you have to worry too much about the strength of the mounts since it is designed to tow with. I know I pulled a dead Scout for about the last mile out of Barret Lake this fall. I had it attached to one of my side clevis mounts, and saw no signs of anything moving.

Alright so far today my focus has been on my tank skid, I already went out and priced a 4'x4' peice of 12ga. so I can cover this bad boy and have leftovers for other necessary things.

I started by drawing some straight lines and hacking off the brackets.
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/dscn3347.jpg

After that I had to sit and think for a while about how I was gunna go about this, then it came to me. Looks like its going to work like a charm.
(still has 3-4" to go up)
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/dscn3348.jpg

Right side under:
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/dscn3349.jpg

Left side under:
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/DSCN3352.jpg.

I cut off the brackets on top and any bends in the skid that made the sides not straight up and down, and was able to get the sides to slide in between the frame rails. It's actually slightly pinched enough to hold its own weight. Here are the right and left sides looking from inside.
This is the right side, the gray is the skid. It can't go up any more yet because it's bottoming out against the floorboard so I have to cut off more material.
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/dscn3350.jpg

Left side:
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/gastank/dscn3351.jpg

Once I cut that extra material off I should be able to get the skid *most* the way up, I still have to figure out how I want to strap it down as it looks like I may have to cut off the rear portion of the strap mounts. I was thinking of having the bolt end of the strap bolt to the body instead of the skid. Does anyone think that would be an issue? The only way I could see it being an issue is if I crushed the skid, but with as high and as thick as it is I dont think that'll happen.

Final product:

I get to throw it back on tomorrow, and im getting a peice of 4' x 4' 12ga. steel so I can plate the back and build the box for the filler hoses, I got somewhere between 7 and 8" more clearance out of this project, I'm VERY satisfied. The hitch is next but its gunna have to wait till after my day snow wheelin trip on thurs =D

I took my dads drivers seat today, there are some harness differences between the seats (his being heated and such), so as of right now I have a good seat with the heaters not working and the seatbelt light on right now. I also got his gauge cluster - the style that the whole gauge face lights up. I like it. I stole the grill off his brand new jeep also as he liked his older one better. I removed the bug reflector for grins also. The jeep looks WAY better from the front now, I like the new grill a lot.

Hah im pretty happy with the ssrs except for how screwed my rears are, and i hate mud so thats fine with me haha.

The sliders are sitting next to my house waiting for the mounts to be rebuilt and reinforced. Ive just been lazy about it because they arent required for snow wheelin haha.

Sometimes looking at the list of things that still need to be done to be really satisfied with the truck is depressing lol

So I pulled the dub into the garage today for a planned downtime. I'm trying to knock out a lot of the work that I have left to do while its in.

So far I dropped the hitch and tank, and pulled the shocks. I built a tunnel for the fuel hoses to run through in the cab so I'm not getting any fumes (exhaust also) into the cab. I'm going to be inboarding the shocks, and I'm planning on bustin out the grinder and taking some body off behind the rear wheel wells so I can build a bumper that is tucked up higher than most on WJ's. I've got some good ideas going for how to build a bumper off the hitch now so I'm hoping to get that done also. I'm going to roll and seal my rear fenders, and I'm going to be grinding some of my old welds off the claytons and rewelding as some are pretty boogerish and it scares me.

AgitatedPancake
03-17-2009, 01:21 AM
Having issues with my FTP client, I'll get pics up soon.
Got the fuel tunnel completely finished up, and painted it and the new floor black. When the time comes, I'm going to throw some RTV around it to seal it off completely, but I'm not working with big gaps so I'm happy.

I also figured out how I'm going to be doing my rear shock mounts, I'm making a new mini crossmember right infront of the rear coils for shock mounts. I should be able to go from almost vertical @ ride height to severely triangulated if I wish. I'm keeping them as upright as possible.

And lastly, I pulled one of my rear coils out and dropped that side all the way down to see how much bumpstop I'm going to be needing, looks like only 2-3" and I've figured that out so I'm happy with how its all going. I'll get back to it on wed or fri, we'll see.

As for my rear bumper...the more ideas I get the more will have to be cut off the rear...its almost scaring me...almost. If I can pull off what I have in my head...it should be quite the badass bumper. Tucked up SUPER tight with possible internal storage.

I know man, angle grinders scare the shit outta me. I have a buddy who was cutting some tubing for a cage when the cutoff wheel pinched and launched the grinder out of his hands, putting a horizontal cut across his forearm about 3/8-1/2" deep. It knicked the tendons for his fingers 0.o.

But at the same time, they are one of the most versatile tools in my box.

Did some more yesterday, finally cut out the pass side fender. I kinda wung it on this one knowing how I would change what I did on the last one, this one turned out WAY better. I left probably 3/8" in the front near the door, I took a body hammer and pounded the inner fender in then folded the outer fender over it. A little sealer, maybe some welding and paint and it will be golden.

What are the inner bolts for?

AgitatedPancake
03-23-2009, 07:33 PM
different locations for the shocks to mount, to triangulate them a little or have them vertical.

Heres the example:
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/shocks/dscn3473.jpg

Having them towards the outside they are just a TINY bit too long to where even bump stopped the shock would have to mount at the bottom/just below the axle tube not to fully compress, with them slightly triangulated they dont hit at full compression. If I don't like the ride on the street with them this far inboard I can just pull the shock and put it on the outer bolts and do something about my bump stops.

AgitatedPancake

Alright so I'm tinkering with a little mockup for the rear bumper right now, tell me what you guys think! Any input welcome.

I know its hard to see whats going on because of the colors of the cardboard, but yeah.

So I have it sticking out to protect the fender,
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/dscn3478.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/dscn3480.jpg

In the second picture, the part that says BES will be on the same plane as the white/blue that goes down to the bottom of the frame rail.

Here you can see the plane differences. I'm not sure how much I like that look, but I just threw it together a couple mins ago. This is where I need input!
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/dscn3481.jpg

I haven't welded the remnants of that peice to the floorboard so its pushing out, but here you can see how they will be for the final assembly.
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/DSCN3485.jpg

For frame attatchments I'm looking at getting some 4x4 angle iron or 4x4 box tube (and cutting it out), so the side of the frame rails have material to weld supports to for the sides.

Example: Go from the angle iron/box out to the sides right on the bottom of the floorboards with 1" square tubing or something.

Alright took another look today, and decided things would be much simpler if I chopped up to the floorboards instead of trying to cut all those angles. I'm much happier with the cutting, and its making my mounting solutions easier on me.

New cut:
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/dscn3494.jpg

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/dscn3495.jpg

I put the gas tank skid up to check clearance back there. Its also nice because the bottom of the frame rails are in the same plane as that sheetmetal still hanging off the back, I am literally gunan end up with my mounts going straight back off the framerails into the bottom plate of the bumper.
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/dscn3496.jpg

And now I'm thinking about cutting all of that sheetmetal out that I can, I can gain alot of space in here for storage if I bring the inside of the bumper as close to the gas tank as I can. Yeah, I still want to do a storage bumper, we will see if I can pull it off clean or not.

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/dscn3508.jpg

I got my bends started on the rear peice...
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/DSCN3510.jpg

And the potential storage area.
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/DSCN3511.jpg

It will end up with a little less than this
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/DSCN3513.jpg

finish welding the frame rail "L"s.
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/DSCN3514.jpg

I got pissed at my welder. I cleaned it all up with a wire wheel on the grinder, welded most of it up then the last 2-3 welds all got bad porosity...I cant figure out why. With the first one I thought it was because of wind so I shut my work area up, then the next one did it as well. I can hear and feel the gas coming out of the nozzle, and I cranked the output up to like 27cfh with no change. This has happened once before and went away on its own. I'm running a miller 180, 220v with .025 wire (I know a little thin for heavy metal like this.) and co2/argon mix.

so after that I pretty much quit for the day, but I checked out the welder afterwards. I pulled the nozzle off and found a little spatter in a couple of the gas holes. Not completely blocking or anything, but I cleaned it up and it seemed to fix the problem.

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/rearbumper/DSCN3533.jpg

In the storage area, I cut out a part that was intrusive and welded in a peice of plate. The area is about 42" wide, 7-8" deep and 4" tall...I can carry pretty much whatever I want back here (though I don't have the hitch in yet...)

Anyways for the rest of the day I ground down a little visible weld, and welded/ground some of the intersections for asthetics. The metal I'm working with is a little bit rough so I'm thinking spray on bedliner instead of normal paint to mask the imperfections, besides I think it'll look cool =D

Talk about body roll....yeah lol its pretty intense now BUT the rear rides smoother and softer now with the shocks as such. I LIKE IT.

I've been running swaybarless for a while, and had gotten used to it but yeah having my shocks inboarded and triangulated makes it more interesting lol. I love how the rear rides now though, it soaks up bumps a LOT better, just has a slight bounce to it.

Damn man your camera captures some vivid colors.

So When one of my designs is flawed and breaks I'm not ashamed of showing you guys so no one copies me with the same results. The shock bar broke. I shouldn't have driven it without getting limiting straps, but that what I get. When I was out flexing for those pics apparently I did max out the shocks at one point, and because they were triangulated they had massive leverage against the mounts and bar which bent/weakened the bar. It broke a few days later just driving around. If I had my limiting straps installed this wouldnt have happened as they were going to be mounted to the outer bolts which were in the middle of the gussets and closer to the frame rail so there would be less leverage. Oh well you live and learn right? I got some 1x2" box mounted across the same gap with 1/4" plates on the inside of the frame rails instead of 1/8". I'll snap some pics, but hopefully my dumb ass wont break this one.

Alright I rebuilt the sides of my front bumper after I ripped one side apart on my last rubicon trip a while ago, heres the best pic I have:
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/barrett/laborday09/resized/DSC03496.jpg

I tucked the sides up way higher than before, and added alot of support by putting some plate on different planes to add rigidity. If I could find a radiator that was about 3" shorter I could completely eliminate the lower rad support. The bottom of the radiator would sit about even with the bottom of the frame rails so I could make a straight support across, and cut the bottom of my front bumper off from the bend down. That may happen at some point in the future...

Alright I got some plans/ideas for the dub this winter, should be a lot of fun and new experiences haha. I've been talkin with a local guy on Pirate who has a 9" for sale...built to the hilt. Strange nodular 3rd, Daytona pinion support, pinion guard, 35spl detroit locker, 35spl moser shafts and its set up for claytons. I should know within a week if that deal is going to work out for me, if it does it will be nice as I'll never have to worry about the rear axle again (atleast for a long time lol). It has the clamp style lower spring retainers which is a definate bonus for me with my spring falling out issues, and at the same time I would be rebuilding my bumpstop extensions as I destroyed and lost one last trip to Barrett.

Other then that I've got my boatside ideas, I want to go up as high as I can.

Would '79 knuckles for for disc brakes?

AgitatedPancake
09-30-2009, 03:10 AM
well the 79 would have the cast on wedges, your pretty much limited to running the ford-style radius arms. Those axles might be a little wider than my jeep 44 also, you might want to check.

jfowlzj95

quadratokn
09-30-2009, 05:33 PM
The WJ is 63" IIRC? Im thinking rear wheel adapters to fit the different bolt pattern. Would the adapters in the rear be enough to have the axle widths close enough, compared to the front?

The '79 WMS is 66" so screw that.

I'm totally up for picking up a Waggy off craigslist, taking the axle, and parting it out. But are they all LP?

Ahh hahaha how awesome is that, the only way you can carry one of these SOB's in a grand.

I've been doing my research, and liked the idea of doing a ford rotor with a caddy caliper for the ebrake. That means I would use the same rotors front and rear with interchangeable calipers. BUT I don't know the final solution everyone used for the difference in thickness from the drum brake backing plate so I'm not sure. I also just found a method, someone used a sidekick rotor and subaru front caliper, as they used front ebrakes. I like it.

I just cut out the center of the drum backing plate, bolted it to the end of the axle tube, traced the flange onto the cut out piece, then went at it with a grinder. Came out pretty even, I only have a small leak but I think that's because the seal on the axle shaft is bad. I went for about a month before I noticed it was leaking, to fix it I just put RTV on the tube flange and the mounting plate that's on the shaft... not more leaks so far. Costs nothing and it works.

AgitatedPancake

Hmm. I got the crazy idea in my head of attempting to swap over the WJ's brakes, we will have to see how far fetched it is when I pull the 44a out.

Also, I counted 48 teeth on one of the rear shafts ABS tone rings. Thats damn nice because I'm going to be getting a tone ring machined to be pressed onto the yoke to read speed. To read the same speed as right now it has to have 4.56 times less teeth than I do currently because of the gear reduction. I can round to 10 teeth (similar to 4.80 gears), so my speedo should actually be closer than it is right now.

AgitatedPancake
10-04-2009, 12:34 AM
Tore down the 44a today, pulling it tomorrow most likely. It looks like with a redrill I *might* be able to get the WJ's old rear brakes working, that would be nice to retain stock ebrake and such. Here are some pics from today.

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/9/DSCN3676.jpg

The teeth themselves are about 1/16", the gap seems to be 1/8, so when I get the yoke tone ring made I will try to make sure the gaps are 2x the size of the teeth.

Hah, that looks like my 44A before I swapped to a new axle; ground down, twisted, and nowhere near worth selling to someone else!. I swapped it out for a 60,9" hybrid. When I worked out the brakes on my rear I did the El Dorado calipers. Mated with the front D30 calipers, the pedal was less than desirable. I wish you better luck with your 44 disks... I presume they are the stock Waggy variety?

AgitatedPancake
10-10-2009, 03:21 AM
Oh yeah the housing is scrap for sure, I'm going to sell the gears, carrier, and locker if they all pass my personal inspection.

Actually I'm hoping I can get the stock 44a backing plate, rotor, and caliper to work so I can retain my stock ebrake and cables as well. The pic below shows the 44a backing plate bolt spacing vs the 9" retainer spacing

http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/9/DSCN3684.jpg

A question for ya Eric, did you ever get rid of the D30? If so what was your ABS solution? I'm going to be doing some tinkering to see if I can get a tone ring on the 9" yoke but I've never seen it done.

AgitatedPancake
10-18-2009, 07:58 PM
Dove in today, drilled out the backing plates to fit the housings. I'm going to use a pair of old rear rotors to make spacers out of to have the correct brake backspacing. I'm going to cut the wheel mount face off, its 1/4" thick and will make up my 1/4" spacing difference perfectly. Next in line, figure/work out a spacer for the bearing retainer.

Jeeptech01

Looks cast to me. Maybe you could find some round bar that is an interference fit to the old hole and knock it in. Then the bearing retainer would sandwich it all together.

AgitatedPancake
10-22-2009, 07:11 PM
I really like that idea man, I'm looking into that as my main option for a solution now.

So I'm not going to try to retain the ABS @ the axle shafts for speedo reading, going to come up with another solution. The housing flange covers up the sensor hole, and the larger diameter axle tubes wouldn't let you get the sensor in I dont think.

I trimmed the housing flange to fit the backing plate oriented correctly, I had it flipped backwards in the earlier pics to check the bolt holes.

Here it is. I bolted the bearing retainer up as a guide as it fit perfectly in the bracket. trimmed up:

Nope, kept the 30 (but am in the slow process of selling the dub). I could have swapped out the tailhousing and done the speedo conversion though. I forgot that the TW SYE mainshaft that I installed on the 242 several years ago had the speedo gear cut on it, it clearly did not start life in a WJ. I discovered this when I tore the case down a few weeks ago, just prior to the sale.

Good luck on the tone rings, with a little ingenuity it should be doable. But, I would still run the tone signal through a Truspeed: well worth it IMO.

I tried to set up the gears yesterday, but got pissed and stopped when I noticed some metal filings had gotten into the gearset and were doing wierd things with the pattern and stuff. Got it all cleaned out, put it all back together with the old shim pack under the pinion support, cranked in the adjusters till I felt like I had a good backlash (comparing to what I remember from the D44), then did a little more to preload a bit. I don't know how to measure or check preload on the 9", so as of right now its just "a little more" on the adjusters once the backlash is set haha.

I like this so I'm about to head over to my brother in laws to first check the backlash, then use his press and race seaters to put my new bearings on the pinion.

So I got new pinion bearings for peace of mind, assembled the pinion and took it to west coast diffs to torque the pinion nut down to crush the crush sleeve and set the pinion preload, came out with around 11 in. lbs which is decent for new bearings. After that I got everything set up again, did a few more patterns with a few variations and got to a pattern I'm happy with. I'm thinking this will be my final pattern as everything is torqued to spec and the drive side is perfect.

Sorry if I missed it, but what was the wms to wms on the nine. I just picked up one, 65". Just dont know how wide this will be under my zj. Bad ass jeep by the way!

I'm running a 9" out of an F150 (65" WMS), with 33x12.5s mounted on 15x8s with 4" backspacing the tire sticks out about 2-3" on each side, overall outside tire to outside tire mines around 80" wide. You can check my build for pics, Tyler (CrawlerReady) is running a 9" too on 37s... check his build for pics also. There's also a few others who are running the full width 9 under a ZJ.

got a decent amount of work done today

Started by tearing the old 44a apart...She was good to me:

But hmm...problem? First time I've had a close look

Pass side carrier bearing:

Housing @ Carrier bearing race...ouch

A shim...

Now kids, let this be a lesson not to drive 5 miles on a broken axleshaft, unless you WANT it to make you upgrade :D.

And here are the axle colors together; flat black and a hammered bronzy coppery color. I like it. The centersection, brake brackets and claytons links are going to be that color and the rest will be black.

Hmm. Parts coming together...
http://www.agitatedpancake.com/random/jeep/9/DSCN3739.jpg

Had to chop off part of the old shock mounts to orient them differently, how convenient. I found a place to use the part I cut off, as new limiting strap mounts!

Aaand link color vs jeep...not too bad but I don't expect the jeep to stay this color for too much longer.

Jeep parts recycling. Great idea. So what color do you plan on making it? Since there isnt a straight panel on the whole damn thing. Maybe you could cover it in carpet or fur. LOL Ball busting over...

Perfect. You could make it lift its leg and piss on hummers...

Haha that would be awesome. No but seriously on the trails around here I would give props to any hummer driver if I saw them out there...they wouldnt fare well in the tighter areas.

All 4 links are painted, I may replace the UCA bushings while they are out, they are the originals that clayton sent with the kit a couple years ago.

Color doesn't show well

Hmmm snap. Test fitting thangs. Gotta do a little more toying with the lower shock mounts, then I gotta finish the brakes that I've been procrastinating on...Make a 1/4" wheel spacer, and the bearing retainer spacer.

Holy god it is an amazing thing to be able to do this without the third in it...

Stuffed up to full bump of the shocks, the bumpstops will actually stop the axle a bit before this, but the truss has about 1" of clearance behind it at the gas tank

Haha it's nice isn't it? That's what I love about the 9", so easy to move around when it's empty.

Are the chains gonna be limiting straps? It seems like that might be prone to snagging on other components if so. Plus noisy.

Yep they are. I had them on for the past trip and they never bothered me, I bungie them together so they are always under tension. No noise!

Jon, yes man it's amazing. I am pretty much in love with the 9". Now it'll be time to see how it holds up. Supposed to be going on a Fordyce trip this weekend, time crunch!

Did a little before class today. I've always been intimidated by using oxyacetalyne for cutting. I don't know why, but I just never used it. I used it today, making the 1/4" thick spacers for the rotors so they are positioned properly. I don't know how i've lived without the torch in the past, It's actually alot more accurate and less cleanup than I was expecting! (I've ued a torch a few times in a welding class a few years ago, but not much other then that)
