Looking for opinions.
18' 10k trailer (2 5200lb axles), 2 5/16" bulldog coupler, brakes on both axles.
Drive over fenders, sides extended to fender width. (96"), 4 extra D rings, and a spare tire
$3750 out the door, tax, title, etc. The stock version of the trailer is $2795 before tax, etc.

Would look like this, just no tire rack or toolbox http://www.planet4x4.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2265&stc=1&d=1138817840
Now I don't "need" this much of a trailer at this point, but I'm looking ahead, say if I need to haul a full size truck, or if I would put full widths on the Jeep.

I don't know nate seems like you may be able to get a better deal on a used one if you want to go that route. There was a double car big tex goosneck on pirate for like $4400. Shit I'll sell you mine for a G if I can find a reasonable double car goose neck. I am going to TDS and EJS and if I can tow another rig, it will save me a ton on gas and damn near pay the differnce of the two.

I'm not really looking for used because often times shit has been neglected with trailers. "Oh yeah... great shape" and you find the bearings and brakes are shot, trailer is twisted, needs new tires, etc.

So I'm looking for new really. If I come across a good deal on a used one, I would go that route, but I haven't found anything built halfway decent for a reasonable price.

Homebuilt, bogger welded, mobile home axles with no brakes going for $1000 !!!

Tommy, what's the deck height on your trailer?

I can get an 8x18' 10k deck over for about $3300. Deck is about 39" from the ground though from what I'm told, compared to 20" with a car hauler.

Once I get my truck back, I'm going to go look at the trailers to get a better feel.

Nate,

If I remember correctly, I paid $3300 (including options) for my 24' gooseneck deckover with dual 7k axles both braking. I added the options of spare tire, locking chain box and 2nd jack. Here's the current pricing, specs and options to compare against. Steel prices have gone up since then though and I bought one when the company was rather young...

If you do alot of research before you buy youcan get a much better deal I paid @ 5500 for a 45' enclosed trailer when I had my race car a few years ago, it was an every thing on the lot must go sale. Now I'm looking for a open trailer for the Jeep.

Yeah you pretty much stole that trailer dude! That's probably a $12-15,000 trailer.

With the steel prices, stuff has gone up ALOT! I priced out Kaufman trailers and they are the about the same price as C&B.

With the prices I gave in my other post, some of that is upgrades. Drive over fenders, widen the deck, extra D ring, spare tire, tax, title, etc. That's bascially $1000 in "hidden" fees.

I've got a few changes to the original plan, so I should drop the price to just around $3000

Yeah I know thats the great thing about looking for trailers in the "off" season, many places are looking to get rid of the older inventory and they will sell lower than any other time of the year.

What about adding the options yourself to save money short term? If you can weld and if they aren't sturcturally changing anything it might be worth it.

I'm looking for a open trailer for the Jeep.

The base price of the trailer is $2695. Now add 4 D rings, which is $80. Widen the deck and drive over fenders is $600. Now I'm not getting the deck widened, so that should save me some $$. Spare tire is $140. Tax is ~$140. Title, doc fee is $50.

There's alot of hidden costs!

Those are only 7k trailers. Figure the trailer weighs 2k. That means you can only put 5K on it. About the weight of my ZJ.

Thats funny. LOL. My trailer is far from home built though, and booger welded Was actually a good deal for a g. It was built by FE trailers out Carlsbad for Alba Motorsports some time ago. Has trailer brakes to. I bought it for a G and have since put new leaves and u-bolts. Has some rust, buit nothing serious. Just seemed steep for me. The deck height is actually a little high, i need to measure it for sure. but it is 22ft long by 100" wide. With diamond plate decking. Has 15" alcoa's loook a like's to. The thing mine is missing is hooks, that is why have been using those damn straps. If I keep this trailer I plan on lowering the deck height about 4", welding higher rails and fenders I can drive over, plus a cage for gas cans and a tool box of some sort. Needs better tires. It has been used to tow both and f350 and a front loader.

I talked to the trailer shop and they won't build just the drive over fenders without extending the sides because they have found they won't hold up. IMO, that's just piss-poor design. A deck over trailer is about $1000 more than a car hauler, which I really can't afford. So I decided I'll get the stock trailer, for about $3k once all said and done, and either use cribbing blocks (wood ramps over the fenders), or I'll modify them when I need to.

Tommy, I wasn't talking about your trailer when I made the homebuilt, etc comment. I saw a used trailer for sale here that was like that. Honestly I would have been scared to pull it unloaded down the street. Guy wanted $1000

No worries dude. I didn't take it that way. Sorry if I came off like that. I was just letting you know what I got for a G. it needs some work, but they can be had. I am serious though, if I find a reasonable double car gooseneck of some sort. It will be for sale.

curb weight stock is 3,575 lbs

u added 1,425 lbs of modifications?

cool

I said ABOUT the weight of my Jeep.

Stock weight was around 3700lbs with an empty gas tank, no spare tire or backseat. 3575 is probably the weight of a 2WD ZJ.

To be EXACT, it weighs in at 4875lbs. That was with 1/2 tank of gas, no camping gear, spare parts or tools.

Go put your Jeep on a scale and I bet you'll be surprised.

Trailer is not for the Jeep only. If I wanted to pull a fullsized truck, 5k isn't going to cut it. Hell my truck is just under 7k empty.

Keep your eyes open. I picked this up used for $4,750. It's a $8,000+ trailer new. http://www.take3trailers.com/ It was used to pull cars between Colorado and Wisconsin and the guy got sick and had to sell. It had maybe 15k miles on it when I bought it. 20k gross

The only thing I would add or change is back-up and work lights, and a 3rd axle. All of which can be added fairly easily.

In your pics, the deck looks bent.

I went up to the trailer place and took a look. Nice 18' 12k deck over I would like, but it's $4300. So not sure. I can get a car hauler for $2700, or the deck over.

It's just the way the lighting was in the pictures. The only problem with a trailer this size, is the size. There are places it just will NOT fit. Most of the good off-road places are back a long windy road with steep dropoffs, etc...

I scored this one from a salvage auction a few years back. http://evilallianceracing.com/ipw-web/gallery/albums/The-$corevette/100_0795_0009.sized.jpg
The hitch was broke and 2 of the tiedowns were bent. I'm guessing it broke going down the road and took out the tow vehicle. I fixed the hitch and it's been great. I just need to get a bigger truck so I can start headin' out to Moab.:D Twisted thing about the trailer, I bought it for $1900 with a salvage title and feel I got a really good deal. The original taxable value of the trailer when it was built in '94 was $1800 and some change!

How wide is that trailer? My rig is about 96" wide outside wheel to outside wheel. That was the problem I was having, finding a wide trailer or one with fenders I could drive over. i am sure they are out there, just didn't look hard enough.

Eww, the deck on my trailer is 84". It could be easily modified though. the last thing I hauled was a late model F-350 dually. The rear outside duals were hanging off by about 1/2 tread. It's a sweet pulling trailer and more manuverable than my friends 16' bumper-pull. I've been using it for hauling salvage wrecks and race cars, out east and on the flats. Once I get the dually up and running I'm going to use it to haul my XJ+ over the hills to Utah!

I measured mine a week or so ago to see if a "monster" truck with 50"+ tires and 2.5 ton rockwells would fit on it. My deck is 96" wide and just under 37' long on the deck.

nate
02-24-2006, 12:30 PM
The deck is 96". You must be right at 102" with from edge of tire to edge of tire on the trailer!

ZJZJ
02-25-2006, 10:14 AM
Actually, the tires are nicely tucked beneath the deck on mine. One of the nice features you can get with the deck over style. The stake pockets stick out maybe 2" on both sides, so that does get me close to 100-102" overall width. I have to be very careful where I go. In some states I am actually illegal due to the length of the truck and trailer. I'm just shy of 65' total. Some states limit you to 60-62' overall. Of course, you have to be a rocket scientist and a lawyer to find all the applicable laws in each state. I'm sure I'm illegal on some roads due to width as well.

For example, in Michigan the speed limit is posted at 55 for trucks. Legally, my truck and trailer do not fit the states definition of truck. So, I assumed that I was not limited to 55mph. I happened to be looking thru some of the motor vehicle laws and ran across another section that stated that I am subject to the 55mph limit due to weight restricted speed laws. I guarantee that if you drive any vehicle, you will break a law every time you drive and never even know it. It just sucks to have to drive 55mph when you have a 3 day weekend to drive to KY to go play off-road. :(

nate
02-25-2006, 11:19 AM
If you have a vehicle pulling a trailer, in most states you have to follow the truck speed limit. So I've been told anyway. My truck pulls the Jeep on a trailer just fine doing 75-80mph. (the speed limit)

I'll take some pics and get some specifics for you.. Needs a little work but it is a good trailer. Served me well so far. It will be for sale eventually once I get my double car hauler. I plan on going to EJS and I scored, a buddy of mine just bought a 5th wheel 53 foot 3 car hauler. Going to save me some gas money towing two other rigs out there. Yeah buddy!!!
