AMC stopped making jeeps is 1985 when they sold to Chrysler.....Tcases at that time were 300's. I believe your only options for 231's are 231J and 231C.....the C's being in blazers. If it's a 231 our of a 90's XJ it would indeed be a 231J. J = Jeep C = chevy

Actually some of the early YJ's had AMC231's in them (I had one so I know this to be true). Some of the early XJ's (the ones w/2.5 & 2.8 GM 6-cyl) also had AMC231's. From what I know, no YJ or XJ ever came OEM with a 300.

Some of the Eagle cars also had AMC231 T-Case's in them. Dodge also used a 231HD and Chevy 231C. A common swap is to do a 231HD chain swap into a 231 (J or AMC) as the chain is 1/4" wider and has a better strength rating.

I don't believe the official sale from AMC to Chrysler was until the '88 model year. I had an '87 MJ that still had the AMC logo on the steering wheel, the key, and owner's manual.

That dodge would be 231D Not HD.. Its commonly referred to as HD because it is hella beefed up compared to 231J.. But I have one sitting on my garage floor and it just says 231D..;)

SO there you have it.. 231J .. 231C and 231D and I know they had the 231AMC in 88XJ for sure.. Dont know about other years... :smt108

I guess it depends on the year... SOme SJ's (Fullsize cherokees) had passenger drop axle... If it was from that kind of Cherokee it wont fit...

If it was from an XJ.. It should fit just fine...

There is a Dodge 231HD it was used in 1500's with the 4x4 off road package and 2500's(BR/BE bodies)
The early 84-86 XJ's came with a NP207 case. Chrysler bought AMC from Renault in 87 not 85, 87 came with NP 231's in XJ's and 88 YJ's got the 231 as 87 YJ's still used the NP 207

friend of mine has a AMC242 in his '86? XJ. I was wondering why it said Hi lock and 4wd on the shift bezel.

the designation is from who ordered them AMC231/242 or NP231J, C,D or 242 J, C. The J stands for Jeep the C is Chevrolet(GMC) and the D is for Dodge as they use the same cases as Jeeps.
