I need to find the right equipment. It needs to be capable of mounting tires in the 37-38" range.

Is this worth anything?

I'm thinking no, haha

Handles all tires from 8" to light truck (7.5 x 16 and flotation tires up to size 12.5L16).

I've done it with a couple long screwdrivers before.

you would have to pay for a lot of tire mounting to recover the cost of a machine that can handle a 37-38" tire. I wouldn't know - I live next door to a tire shop. They'll mount up a set of 5 for $20 for me. :flipoff2:

I'm thinking of simple farm equipment type tools. I've heard them called a "tractor bar" and a "tire spoon". Irok beads are so thick that the screwdriver and prybar wouldn't do a thing when I gave it a shot.

IIRC - Last person I saw with tire spoons got them off a tool truck. If you have a TSC in the area, it might be worth a shot to check there.

Thats a tough call when you're on a budget. I mounted my 39.5's on a 5-6k machine that had all the funny attachments on it to do small tires as well as big ones. my 39.5's were the largest tire you could mount, no bigger for sure!

i dont even bother with anything for help, all hand done, works fine for me, havnt had a problem yet, as for balancing, i just drive it to my local tire shop, connections rule, and when im out here at college, i got access to the tire machines for mounting/dismounting, and balancing, takes about 5 mins for me to mount, fill and rotate a tire, by hand, take me prolly 15-20, but the labor of it is fun!

I personally mounted 49" IROKS using a Coats Machine. If fact the fuctard had bought Boyd wheels 20"s IIRC.

My buddy just scored a used tire machine for 250$, and since he doesn't have a garage at his house, he asked me, "do ya mind if I keep it in your shop?...you can use it anytime you want."

so now i got a tire machine for free! :)

Car/light truck tires are a bitch to mount by hand...usually the bigger the tire the easier it is to mount...provided you know what you're doing and mount the tire from the correct side of the rim (there's a reason rims are shaped the way they are on the inside).

And using screwdrivers is a really good way to slice the beads on the tires and kill them.

I mount my 38.5x14.5x15 tsl sx's by hand with bars, they almost fall on with soapy water, even easier now that I have beadlocks, only have to pry one side on.

Where'd you get your bars? Tractor Supply?

OK I'm back with the answer to my own question...

I think I need something like these:

Here's the link to the Extreme Outback ones (pictured above with green case):

What length should I be looking for? Seems like I'd at least want a bar the diameter of the tire I'm dismounting/mounting, so that puts me in the 3 foot range... The Extreme Outback ones look pricy, and I don't need a tool to break beads, I can do that well enough on my own.

Yep sometimes bigger tires are easier because they are stiffer around the bead and stay in place when you get them over the rim. When I was growing up on the farm we used tire irons for tractor tires. Basically tire irons were the only way to do this in the field and you are on a farmers budget.

A highlift jack to break the bead and a couple of short leaf springs from an old spring pack work great for mounting tires. And if it's a little stubborn seating back on the bead a shot of ether and a match (*not for the faint hearted*).

Tire machine is for pansies ;) JK Mounted tires before at home 33 and 35 very easy, 37 and up you will need help of buddies. I lost my tire completely last year on a snow run (came out of the Jeep), and we were able to put it back pretty quick:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/geberhard/IMGP5539.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/geberhard/IMGP5552.jpg

and set the bead with starter fluid:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/geberhard/IMGP5555.jpg

Now I do not need to pay for tire mounting anymore, pretty much have the beadlocks paying for themselves as far as tire mounting :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/geberhard/1hummerflat.jpg I figure, for a couple hundred bucks, true double beadlocks. Figure out another $200-300 for centers (66cjdean on pirate), and he can make stock jeep pattern if you need, and you have a set of beadlocks, anc can mount your own wheels for about $600 :)
