Well, i had a 94 yj, but then i rolled it. At the time i had a AX-15 w/ 33k on it in my shed, and i had a centerforce series 1 clutch on the bad AX-15 in the YJ. I'm 19, but I went to a tech school, been more then familiar with jeeps for 3 or so years, and im a mechanic by trade... just on stuff much larger then jeeps... My point is basically, i wanna know if its something someone with a few friends and moderate skills can pull off. I have almost everything except a reason for the swap, which brings me to my next question... This is my daily driver, I'm planning on building a TJ or ZJ this winter. I want better gas mileage seeing as its a DD, i was wondering if anyone could give me the numbers they get for gas mileage with a 4.0 and a AX-15. Ifs its any better then what im getting, like, more then 1 or 2 mpg, ill probaily do it, but if not... Anyone wanna buy a pair of AX-15's?

i've done an ax-15 swap into my 95 zj and i certainly DO NOT recommend doing it on a DD. It takes quite a bit of time to do the swap and unless your auto is taking a crap and you cant afford to have it rebuilt or whatever it just dosen't make much sense. my zj hasn't been a DD in probably 2 years so i dont really know what to tell you as far as improvements in fuel economy.

Yeah, i know what your saying... i was jsut throwing it out there. I was wondering if anyone who has a factory 5 speed zj could give me numbers or somethin. I hate auto's tho, mines rebuilt (luckily) but i have all the stuff so i figured y not, i have other vehicles to get me around, i jsut wanna squeeze every mpg i can outta that engine. ;-) ... i guess i jsut got more time on my hands then i know what do do with...

I've looked into swapping a manual tranny in, though I want an NV4500 in mine.
zjeepin and I have pm'd about it, I'll give you a link to where you can get a clutch master.

Definately pick up the factory service manual for the wiring side of things.

Well... i would adore stroking it... but the 4.6 is gonna go in this winters vehicle, whether i find a cheap zj or tj. But yeah, the link would be great. A 4500 would be sweet cause of the syncronized reverse... but jsut too overkill you know? (i can;t beleive i jsut said that, really... if you know me personally, ull know i dont say that... ever) I mean. I have a pair of ax-15's and a nice clutch and brandy new throwout in my basement i forgot about. One question i didn't think about till now..... well, 2. first off, did the zj ax-15 use a internal or externally mounted slave cyl? and, I got a XJ and YJ 231 like, in m lap so to speak. What would be the best bet, if any differance, or should i jsut keep the 242. I personally like the 242 because of the part time 4wd. Keep in mind, in not going crazy here(dude... i said it again), because im jsut thinkin throw the 242 back on.
great, now my heads working... ill look at that link before i waste more precious forum space.
BTW, i went to Monty Tech in central mass... i was in industrial tech, small engine, deisel, welding, plumbing, electrical, woodworking, sheet metal, HVAC, hydraulics, basically learn a bit of everything and now i can DEFINATELY apply it, and have been for some time.

http://www.jeepshop.com/ type in zj clutch master into the search then it should be the first link, only $125.
You can get the tranny mount from the dealer for like $125 (that's cnd) when I checked.

As for the NV4500, total over kill but I like it that way. I'll have to customize just about everything but I don't mine it'll be a damn nice set up.

well, for me its.. dammit, u made me say it again... overkill, but your damn straight id have one if it wasnt a dd. By any chance off the top of your head, do you know the differance between a yj and zj slave?

I haven't a clue.
Zjeepin might know a bit more.

(All MPG's have been rounded down to first whole number)

My select-trac 95 ZJ on 31's got 13 MPG with the 42re
After i did the AX15/231 swap i was getting a regular 16 MPG

same roads, same engine (all the while with screwed up 250,000 mile injectors)

After i convert my quadra-trac 96' with an excellent running 4.0l that already gets 16 MPG over to the ax15/231 combo (i wrecked my 95 last week)
I expect to get 19-20 MPG

Thats what i was thinking-ish. Im kinda leaning towards build up my other zj when i get it first... but i think im keepin one of my ax-15's here... for a rainy day ;-)

If you need an external slave and master let me know. I have one from a 97 TJ that was 6 months old when I did a swap.

Thats awesome guys, ill most likely do the swap then. those are some good numbers. By any chance, do you know what your gears are? and did u do any like engine mods like a intake or something? thanks man

Anyone know if by any chance like, A flywheel and clutch from a 94 yj 4.0 would work? i mean, i dont see why not, im jsut wondering. thanks

IIRC all the 4.0 flywheels are the same. call a dealer and get them to check part numbers for a 93 5sp ZJ and a 4.0 YJ.

Flywheel: 53005524 (old number); 53020519; 53020519AB (newest number)

Fits 91 to 01 Cherokee, 93 to 96 ZJs, 91 to 04 Wranglers.

All share the same flywheel when equipted with the 6 cyl and 5 speed.

very nice. instead of messing around taking it off and whatnot... ill prolly jsut swap the whole engine someday this summer. Make it easier for myself. Plus, its rebuilt, and has none of that sweet piston slap ;-)

I did the conversion on my ZJ too. Use whatever master/slave made for the transmission to be safe, unless you are 100% on it working correctly.

Trey, I called you back while I was in NYC and left a message. Hit me up. SunCom is fucked up from the ice storm and I can not make ANY phone calls or text messages. I can only receive both. Call me man.
