View Full Version : I want to go wheeling...

Maybe a week from this sunday. 11/13. Anyone want to go? Anywhere near Denver?

SuicideTireZJ

hmmmm.... I might be down. I've never wheeled with another Grand before. I'm in Fort Collins, saw you were in Greeley. Can your rig take Carnage Boulder? If not you could swing up here and we could do Sevenmile or Kelly Flats up the Poudre.

JohnBoulderCO

Carnage is fun.
I have never done Kelly Flats, so I would be up for giving that a try.

Mike can handle carnage no problem, as can I... I'm down for whatever but carnage is a little played out. my .02

If someone's got a portable GPS I have coordinates for a plane wreck on Crystal Mountain, that would be pretty fun to try and find.

JohnBoulderCO

I have a GPS.
And, yes, I have hit Carnage twice in the last 3 weeks, so I'm up for something else.

Yeah I've heard about that wreck. Unfortunately my GPS is in Denver and I don't think I'll be driving all the way down there.

Anyway, Kelly Flats is a super easy trail with a couple decent obsticles (the Chutes, Heart Attack Hill) that are bypassable.

I've never done Crystal because we always seem to have to turn around at the top of Moody Hill getting there.

Sevenmile is a kickass snowbashing trail, so if there's snow on it we should consider it.

We've also got to consider the possibility that the F.S. has started closing trails which is something we should definitly check before we head out.

SuicideTireZJ

Both my roommates are up for a trip to moody/crystal and one has a GPS unit so we can find the plane wreckage.

We'll probably try and leave Fort Collins around 10:30AM which means we'll be at the trailhead around 11:15-11:30. If anyone wants to meet up somewhere and caravan out there we can organize that too. Just let me know if those times work.

XLSLC

Those times sound good, us from Boulder will be better off taking... 34 (?) NW to the trail head instead of meeting in FC.

From denalijb on CO4x4:

That's somewhat near the center by the ditch where they buried it. It's quite spread out.

Cool, we'll see you guys around 11:15 or so at the bottom of Moody Hill then?

So is Mike going on this trip? I'm not sure where this trail is, need to look it up to see if I can be there at the start time.

I think he's still interested... although he hasn't posted recently.

www.4x4trails.net should help you find it, or I'm sure XLSCwhatever his name is will chime in with directions from B-Town

i'm gonna try and make this...suicide- where are you leaving from in collins?

XLSLC
11-09-2005, 12:02 PM
From Captain on CO4x4:
Yeah, if you are coming from the south take I-25 to 34 west, then CR 27 north to Masonville. Then take a left at Masonville Mercantile onto Stove Prarie Rd. Follow this for several miles until 44H cuts off to the left, take that. Parking for Moody is about a mile up 44H on the right, trail goes to the left. I think this is right, if you get lost don't blame me for being too lazy to look it up yourself!

Also, I've got the trail head punched in to my jeep GPS so if anyone wants to meet in Boulder before hand, shoot me a PM.

We'll be leaving here around 10:30 like stated in an earlier post. I emailed the head of the local club up here and we might have a group meeting in the parking lot of Moby around 10:20 but I'm not sure.

If you wanna caravan it out there let me know and we can figure out some place to meet up beforehand.

Sorry, Internet's been down and I've been in Greeley with a huge work load as of late.... anyway, Yes I still want to go! I ran crystal at the beginning of the summer but not moody. Isn't this trail straight off of 34? John, we can meet at i-25 and 34 interchange on sunday if you want. say 10:30? I think that should be enough time.

JohnBoulderCO
11-10-2005, 10:22 AM
I think from Boulder, isn't it up 36 towards Estes? I need to get the map out.

We going to run Crystal too, not just Moody, right?
The Wells book shows them next to each other and Crystal is suppose to be harder.

XLSLC
11-10-2005, 10:59 AM
Its up 36 if you take the scenic (long) route.

I'm going 119->287->17->34->56->27

Estimate time by Streets + Trips : 1:27

JohnBoulderCO
11-10-2005, 11:32 AM
287 was my other option. Sounds like a plan.
I might be able to caravan out with you or just meet at the trail head.

We're running both. From what I can gather, the only real reason to run moody is it's a hell of a lot faster to get to Crystal that way, as opposed to taking the roads there. Moody isn't much of a challenge. Crystal is rated something like a 7 or so.

zjmike4
11-10-2005, 04:47 PM
Yeah crystal is pretty fun. Ive never ran moody

jsteves

moody has one little place to play, otherwise yes, it is the short cut to crystal. Crystal is fun, but really not too difficult.

There are some Trip Reports on CO4x4. Looks like there is a place called the "Quarry Area". Big ledges, steep climbs, loose rock. :D

Time to bust my first axle!

I actually invited the CSU Big Wheels to come... maybe that wasn't such a great idea but they didn't have an event planned for this weekend and I'm pretty sure they don't bring too huge of a following, especially to a more difficult trail like Crystal.

We could always go on the premise that ZJ's are obviously the pinnicle of 4x4 perfection and that any owner of a lesser vehicle can worship from afar... or just behind us on the trail so we don't have to wait for them...

SuicideTireZJ

There's a group meeting in the parking lot of Moby Arena at 10:20. Heck, I might even show up there because I DID invite them to join in...

Yeah I meant purchase price and all. But then again I bet some dudes got plenty more than that in parts, time, and labor alone into their ZJ's on here. Anyway, see you in a couple days. Be sure to show up early to avoid the zoo, I guess some fools on CO4x4 are rollin' too

JohnBoulderCO

So, 11:15am at the Moody Trail head.

The MC group is coming from all different directions. Two of us are leaving north Boulder at 9:30.

15k... I wish. I have about that just in parts

Yeah, that is the place i was talking about, it is towards the top of moody, i know where it is at.

any way, i think i will meet you guys over there at moby 10:20...see everyone else at the trailhead

If you come up HWY 93 into Boulder, then up Foothills/119 that would hook up with us.

We are meeting at the Park and Ride on 119 and Niwot Road at 9:30am.

Then on to Longmont, 287, then to Fort Collins. If you go to I25 you will be heading further East then you need to. Either way, tail head around 11:15am

zjmike4
11-12-2005, 11:26 PM
Ok, I still have a few things I need to get done before I can go out and play, hopefully I can finish some tonight. I'll try to head that way to meet up with you guys. Lets say channel 13 in case I need to radio you.

zjmike4
11-12-2005, 11:33 PM
Ok, my friend in a tahoe on 35's wants to go to. He is coming from Greeley and doesn't know where the trail head is so i told him to meet at the intersection of cr-27 and hw34 at 1045. I think that would put him there right when we would be passing through, depending on a 930 boulder depart.

Cool. See you at 9:30, at HWY 119 and Niwot Road, at the Park and Ride.
Ch 13, if you have a cell PM me your cell phone number, just in case.

Someone on CO4x4 ran both trails today, said it was great, no snow. Should be fun!

XLSLC

Yeah, I hit up Copper yesterday... 9" overnight and then another 9" last night. 2 lifts open and 2 runs open, and thousands of people. Needless to say I left around 2!
