I'm replacing a 95 4.0L NP249J 23 Spline front input, .840" exposed input (with bushing)

I am looking to get a 242 or 231 but have noticed that you guys have also gotten cases that are not exactly in your same year range of input shafts.

I am meaning about the collar inside the input shaft on mine, did you swap it over or does it not matter as long as the replacement case has the same input splines and input shaft length?

I have heard that the 96-98 242's and 231's dont have the input collar....

this is the info I got from drivetrain.com
1996-99 NP249J Quadra-Trac, 23 spline input, 27 spline rear slip, viscous clutch, slip rear output fixed front yoke, shift indicator located above shift lever, 1.75" speedo hole, .840" exosed input shaft

1996-98 NP242J Select-Trac, 23 spine input, 27 spline rear slip, fixed front output yoke, speedo hole, one piece tail housing w/rubber boot, four wire shift indicator located above shifter lever, .840 exposed input shaft

1993-97 NP249J 23 Spline front input 27 rear slip output, viscous clutch, fixed front output yoke, shift indicator above shift lever, .840" exposed input (with bushing)

1993-95 NP231J 23 Spline front input 27 spine slip rear tow piece tail housing, 1.75" speedo hole four wire shift indicator above ahfit lever fixed front output yoke, .840" exposed input shaft, w/pilot bushing

1996-95 NP231J 23 Spline front input 27 spline slip rear two piece tail housing, 1.75" speedo hole four wire shift indicator above shift lever fixed front output yoke, .750" exposed input shaft

1993-95 NP242J Select-Trac, 23 spline front input, 27 spline slip rear, two piece tail housing, w/speedo hole 1.75", fixed front output yoke, four wire indicator switch above shift lever, .840" exposed input shaft w/pilot bushing

1993-94 NP249J Qudra-Trac, 23 spline input, 27 spline rear slip, viscous clutch, fixed front yoke, 1.75" speedo hole, shift indicator located above shift lever 1.550" exposed input shaft

I replaced my '93 249 with a 242 from an XJ (I believe from the 80's). All that I ever heard about was long and short input shaft and the number of splines. Looks like you're looking for a newer style case so I can't really comment there. I swapped the input shaft on my 242 when I rebuilt it before the install. There have been threads about this in the past so try searching too but I haven't read any concerns about the stuff you're talking about but mainly short versus long and the number of splines.

I'm just trying to make sure that if I get a case that is the correct input shaft length and spine count but does not have the collar that it will be ok..... I'm trying to get out of swapping the input shafts. yeah I know it isn't too hard to do and some of you guys are pros at it by now.... but I'm just trying to simplify my WHOLE process of my 4wd conversion, yeah i know I'm NutZ:smt046

I made them in Microsoft Paint. Not too bad huh?
FWIW: I tried to make my swap as "simple as possible" also, but you see how that went! Even after researching everything be prepared to learn a lot, especially if you're doing it yourself.
Good luck.

yeah i'll be doing it all myself even if i have to swap input shafts... it will be easier b/c the 249 is already out sitting in my garage and not in my daily driver. so i can get as many of the technicalities out of the way so HOPEFULLY the swap won't take too long.
