I know this is mostly a cherokee forum, but I am trying to find out if I can use a cherokee for parts. I can't seem to get a solid answer....

I have a 2000 wrangler sport , 4.0l, auto. The front left axle tube and axle is broke. It also drove the front axle through the t-case, so I need that also.
Will the parts from a 96 grand cherokee 4.0l , auto, work ? how?

After some research, I've found the 2000 has a d30 front diff. I believe the 96 has a high pinion d30? If so, can the 2000 carrier be transplated into the hp d30? then gears won't need to be done.

Not sure on the t-case...It seems the 96 may have a 241? If so can it be used ?

Sorry for the long post.
thanks for the help
steve

You're talking about a 30 from a Cherokee. BIG DIFFERENCE from the 30 under the GRAND cherokee. Yes, there's drivetrain differences: often big ones.

HP30 is under the 96XJ, yes. Yes, if you can find a 96 Cherokee that has the same gear ratio as your TJ, the front axle will not only work, and bolt up, it'll be stronger. HP30 > 30, unless it's a disconnect model, which you won't find under a 96. You don't want the disconnect model.

it sounds like you'r talking about moving your gears from your TJ into the HP30? No, not a chance. HP gears are reverse cut. You need gears for that axle.

The 96 has a 231 and if the input shaft is the same length, you can use it.

So I'm clear...The parts jeep I have is a 96 GRAND Cherokee. ( I think zj type?). Are we on the same page? I do not have a plain cherokee for parts.
A grand Cherokee will not work?

ZJ = grand cherokee... XJ = cherokee. i was talking about the axle from a cherokeel since you said cherokee.

Yes, the axle would work. No, you can't just "swap gears." Gears set to one housing won't line up within their .001" spec in another.

thank you... I will pull both tommarow. Maybe I'll get lucky on the gears, if not I will install new...

Thanks again...

You might have meant a 249 tcase in the ZJ, if it is don't bother because the VC already has or probably will crap out on you. As for the front axle, you can usually score a cheap one from the junkyard out of an old XJ. I got mine for $15. :supz: And after a little work was good to go.

I have the one from the 96 grand cherokee. I can install a new gear set if I have to. I've done them on chevys and ford.
The junk yards around here wanted $800-1000 for a direct replacement.

A quick question, I read somewhere that 95+ ford exployers axles may be a upgrade looking into. Anyone know anything about this? What is invoved ? I have a complete parts car.

thanks

That's alot of work . Maybe if I stick with it, and NEED stronger axles , it would be worth it. For now it looks like the zj axle or a junkyard factory replacement( ouch )...
thx
