Here's the story.

Pulled my 249 from my 96 to find it had a short input shaft compared to the 98 231 I am swapping in. No problem, right? Just swap input shafts. Input shaft and helical gearset fit in the case fine. Put the case back together and it turns out that the rear output shaft now sits about .4" too far into the case.

Should the front of the output shaft (where it rides on the needle bearings inside the rear of the input shaft) sit all the way in against the back of the input shaft or should the retaining ring in the tailhousing be the only thnig preventing endplay. Hopefully this makes sense.

Sounds to me like you might be missing a snap ring somewhere.

Foudn the problem. The shaft is a little shorter but I ddin't realize the rear bearing snap ring was what kept the shaft from sliding front ot rear. Took the case apart ass backwards and didn't pay attention to that before.
