What is the cheapest and best way to get a 4:1 transfercase? NP231 with a conversion kit? Atlas? Other alternatives? 241? Are there any companies who you can order a 4:1 transfercase from, and what what price?

That's a 241 IIRC. Who makes a 4:1 kit for a 231? $$$?

Tera makes one. About $1000 IIRC.

But once you're converted to 4:1 do you then have strength issues?

When I put in my HD231 I thought about getting a 4:1 to go with it.

It is pricey, so at that point you should just get an Atlas.

Yes, there are strength issues with Tera's 4:1 There are a bunch of posts on CO 4x4 about people busting the gears. Even a post about Tera saying you can't rev high with 4:1 or bad things happen.

I would pass on it. If you have the $$$ then step up to the Atlas.

4:1 in a medium duty aluminum chain driven Jeep t-case is a waste in my opinion. For the money, you might as well clock, 4:1, and twinstick a d300. Then you start getting into issues such as: is it worth it in a ZJ. But you can figure that part out..

I definitely don't want to clock a 300... far more effort than I'm willing to put forth.

I'm running the Rubi 241 with no complaints, granted I only have this season on it. I'm not concerned for the case, as it's tq ratings show it capable of handling more than enough. However, I am getting serious about replacing the HP30 as I'm no longer confident in the R&P surviving. Maybe I was just looking for an excuse to build an HP44.

Gotta love the increased control with the 4:1 both going over stuff and compression braking.

$1700 for a used one is outrageous, that's about what I paid for a new one.

the problem with the early 4:1 231 gear sets is they didn't weld in the planetaries and when you reved them some pin would come loose and everything would go boom. i had a 231 w/ 4:1 and i never had any problems with it. Gearing is so nice :D

So, if you can pick up a used 231 for cheap, you can probably pickup a 4:1 pretty cheap. I've seen more than a handful pre built 231 w/ 4:1 gears going from between 1000-1500 from people who are going to an atlas.

A 3.8 Atlas can be had for around 1650 if you find the righ places. Probably 1800 at not quite the right places. The atlas is infinately stronger and better than all the above choices.

flipping a d300 is eaasier then doing a 4:1 on a 231. i could have installed my flip kit in abotu 1 hour is i didnt' deside to tear the whole thing apart. the 300 is easier to take apart then the 231. and it is way simpler inside. no pump np snapp rings.

Yeah, but there are other issues involved with flipping it, are there not? It's certainly not just a matter of just bolting it right up... or is it?

If you ar going to spend the $$$ why not go STAK or wait a little while longer and pickup a used atlas when everyone jumps on the STAKs and multigear atlas.

Cuz I can get a 4:1 kit for about a grand, and a 231 for 75 bucks....
