May be a bit of NOOb tech here but I am doing a 249-231 swap and need to swap input shafts between the cases. Only problem so far is I can't get the 249 case split apart.

Is there a trick to this. Tried pulling the tailhousing off but it won't come off either. Sure they separate but won't come completely apart.

Any pearls of wisdom?

There should be a cover held on by two small bolts (maybe Torx??) and there's a snap ring you can access from there that needs to come off.

And after that it just takes a lot of pressure usually. I have broke a few pieces off of 249's getting them apart.

There are 2 spots on the case that have a notch designed to have a screwdriver put in and pried on.

First take the small cover off... do it like dave said.

Then see where the arrow points? Use the backend of a hammer and put it between the two blocks... then turn the hammer -> case open.

Got it? Dunno how to explain it better... will draw pic if you didn't understand.

Thanks for all the responses! I found it. My case was covered in so much gunk from years of a leaking transmission output seal that I thought it was just part of the casting. I didn't realize it was a cover with screws in it. Should've cleaned the whole thing first I guess.

Snapped 2 or 3 of those off when i swapped shafts out of another that the vc was burnt up in.

I just removed the front output yoke and all the bolts holding the case together.
split right apart with a dead blow hammer.

It's a real pain it the ass when you've used The Right Stuff to seal it with. Also when one end on of the snap ring for the back cone is broken off. That was a nightmare. The only thing I would recommend is invest in a GOOD set of snap ring pliers.
