I Have a 1997 Laredo with the 5.2L and black leather. It had a buget boost and 31" all terrains when I bought it, I changed that as quick as I could. I bought RE 4.5" coils and arms and some 31" TRxus MT's. Then needed to upgrade to bigger tires which is when I got my 34" swamper LTB's. I will not bore you with stock pics and a pic of a BB and 31" all terrains, you all know what that looks like. here are some of the recent pictures.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b211/dirtyjeepzj/driversfront.jpg

I have JKS quick disco's, ARB front bumper, custom rear bumper with tire carrier I made, sliders still being finished I made, a HP30 front axle swap with detroit EZ- locker, a 242 Transfer Case, KOR's roof rack, 100 Watt aircraft landing lights, custom made LED rear tail lights, black rockcrawler rims, stripped interior and rhino lined, custom rear storage box for recovery gear, 4" utility lights cut into ARB instead of amber turn lights, LED running lights on the side of the ARB bumper, ARB bumper trimmed for 35's, inner fender well up front all excess metal cut out and beaten over so it doesn't rub on my tires. if I forgot anything I will update soon, also some off road pics will be added as I got only poser shots for now, all others are on my other comuter.

well for those of you who don't know dana 30 axles suck, I have 297 jointed shafts ( non 4340) and a Ez-locker, well I went on a pretty nasty trail run today and half way up the first trail I broke a inner shaft u joint blew right out, had a replacement swapped them was on the trail again so I was 3/4 of the way done and broke the other side. this time my spare shaft was in anothe rig. and i also fucked up my ez-locker. also a guy had a HP30 and 4.56 R&P and a detroit and 4340 chrome-alloy shafts and OX joints and he never broke a axle shaft but snapped his pinion. Just wanted to vent about this trip, I will more than likley be doing a HP44 front swap and a d44 cast rear setup. I also bent the shit out of my front steering setup right at the steering stablizer mount. I will post pics of all my body damage later tonight

I may be wrong but from what I understand the HP44 is not that much stronger than the 30, especially if it is built like the one the other guy had. I think the general opinion is that if you are thinking of going 44 then you should just bite the bullet and go with a 60. I know that is what Kraqa is going to be doing.

I am planning on swapping in an HP30/8.8 shortly for the time being then I will be saving up for either full width 60/14bolt or 60/60.

I'm glad a got my HP30 all bolted together this weekend. I'm glad I wasted so much time and money on it for it to break like a toothpick. What was i thinking?

97trxuszj
09-24-2005, 10:47 PM
what axle would you recomend? I don't really need a 60, but if its worth it to just do a 60 I might. but I can get a HP44 out of a ford for cheap, along with a D44 out of an XJ cheap, a 60 and 14 bolt a little out of my leauge right now. I don't know if I wanna go full widths, the trails here are tight small for jeeps.

97trxuszj
09-24-2005, 10:51 PM
or do you think I should build up the 30 with 4340 shaft ox joints , detroit and 4.56's? then save for a 44 or 60? or should I bite the bullet as said and build a 60?

Cue-Ball
09-25-2005, 12:12 AM
You do not have to go full width. The front 60 is the pricey one the 14bolts are cheap and cheap to build.

I have actually seen some good deals on ebay for 60/14b pairs for like $2500 +/-.

If I had not already spent the money and time I have on my HP30 I would ditch it and go with a 60 (but that is just me). My build up is taking so long right now I just can't afford to change directions so I am going to finish the HP30/8.8 swap with the long arms and then keep my eyes open for a front 60 and then go from there. Most likely will do a 60/14b as the 14b is SOOO cheap to build. Around here they are like $100 then gears and lockers are another $300 +/- and then the brackets and your done. I will have the stock D30/35 axles after my swap and will cut off the brackets and toss the rest of the axles but keep the brackets for my full width build up.

If you are going to keep the 30 build it up with 4340's and all that and you should be pretty good.

lol, I havn't had a problm with the diffrent gear ratio, my buddy used to run 4.56 gears rear and 4.10 up front and thats when his started to get kinda weird, mine is just fine if I am in dirt and not on the road for a long time in 4wd

not having money to regear both axles so leaving them the way they are when installed and wanting to wheel

09-25-2005, 07:29 PM
where can I order 4340 inner and outer shafts that are 30 spline, with 760 joints, and will fit in a 89 HP30?I looked all over and no one has 30 splines with 760's for a non disconect 89 HP30. What lockers do they offer for the dana 30 in 30 splines besides the detroit EZ-LOCKER, and an ARB? I will also be doing 1 ton steering, 4.56's, and trussing the turd. I can do most of the work my self, all the welding and such to truss I can do free at work, my buddy does gears, so labor is cheap. like said above a built HP30 is the same strength as a stock 44. to buy a 44 and build it up and get brackets and everything with alloy shafts blah blah blah, would be more $$$ and labor. I figure I can always polish this turd and if I want to run a 44 or 60 later I can always sell it, people starting would love a built HP30.

Well I have it up on stands stripped, waiting on Clayton's Long arms to arrive, I am swapping in an 8.8 with 4.56's, and ARB locker, and adding 4.56's tot he front with possible ARB locker.took off all the plastic molding and ground off the little mounting tabs and herculinered the doors.

10-09-2005, 08:55 PM
Herculiner looks good, but let's talk about running gear ration's that far off... I don't care if you're offroad, eventually, you'll get on the rocks or other surface in such a position that you'll have enough traction for that to bind up your whole driveline. It's just a bad idea.

But as far as 30's and HP30's go - DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. I should've listened to all the bastards telling me that, but I didn't. I have an HP30 with a warn hub conversion, 4340 inners AND outers with full circle clips and welded caps. On top of that, I have a full detroit locker and spicer ball joints.

Any guesses as to what I blew this year? THE DETROIT LOCKER AND THE BALL JOINTS!

Those are two things you just can't get stronger than. The problem is the size of the axle, there's just not enough room to get more beef in there.

HP60 front and 14 bolt rear, here I come!

97trxuszj
10-09-2005, 11:22 PM
how about a HP44 or just a 44 front and 8.8 rear? would that be strong enough for 36" iroks ( thats the biggest tire I want on this vehicle) and still be able to wheel? I can get a pretty good deal on highboy front HP44's or even better deal on waggy d44's, but I was told that a built d30 was just as strong as a d44. This is going to be my DD and my weekend worrior, and just my fishing camping rig, I will build somthing with a frame for a hardcore rig, I really wanna do full width 60/70 and 38's, I would spend that time on like a YJ or somthing

Agreed entirely on the d30 being a waste. Just curious though, why are you leaning towards the 14b rather than the 60? We were able to snag a full float 60 from a yard here for $85. It's way lighter, and it has much lower gear ratios available.

14 bolt is much cooler. Supported pinon gear and two piece carrier. Much uber cool. The D60 rear is weak anyways. If you dana do a 70.

an hp44 is going to be too wide in the front (65"-67" depending on what outers you use, 8.8 ~58")...I would just go with waggy 44's f/r...they are super cheap and pretty easy to find

And it only has 30 spline shafts. Look into the cost of upgrading that to 35 splines, and you'll be building yourself a 14 bolt too :finga:

I'm only running 4.56 gears with my 40's, but will have 3.8:1 or lower in the tcase.

so you don't have to narrow a waggy front d44? and would a D44 front and rear or a d44 and 8.8 hold up tot the abuse of a lead foot and 36" iroks?

after pricing everything out getting quotes on gears lockers etc. I am going to just finish building my HP30 back to how it was and I am swapping in a d44 with 4.56's and detroit out of an XJ, with claytons, eventually I will sell the HP30 to someone and get a D44 front and then iroks. thenI will be building a YJ or an older CJ-7, just somthing without a unibody

Please don't waste the time or money in building a waggy 44, even if it was free it would be worthless, there is no gain. Also, most people running 36's on a 30 are yj and tj guys...no v8 and lighter rigs. Otherwise, I like it.

You running 35's? yea I had it in 4 lo and was hitting it fairly hard when at full lock, but it first spit the cap then broke at the yoke end and then snaped the splines off in the detroit. but yea broke to easy, so I have now yukon 4340 alloy shafts and their super joints so hopefully I don't break now or if I do its warrenty

That broke really easily.. Weird, I've hammered down with on my waggy 44 with stock shafts turning 37" iroks much harder than that and haven't seen any breakage, knock on wood.. I'm sure once I get beadlocked and the stroker in, that may change.

Q78 TSLs actually. They are like a 35.5x11.5 or something weird like that.

how the hell did that happen? yea I've seen Cam murder his D44 on 37's and it held up fine. Maybe the caps weren't seated all the way in the shaft or something? any pics of the damage?

gearhead313
02-11-2006, 08:21 PM
WOW, i haven't had that happen on my D30 with the 39's!!... yet

97trxuszj
02-12-2006, 12:58 PM
yea the u-joint failed after looking at it, one end of the cross broke and spit the cap out which in turn took out the ears on the ends of the shafts then breaking the inner splines. yea I am pissed that it broke that easy but hey manual hubs and a 2wd TC are nice I unlocked my shit and drove home. Now I have yukon alloy shafts and their super joints, hopefully no more breakage otherwise time for a 60 huh. yea "cam" I have the v8 and u got the I6 which I think matters a little, not sayying your not hard on your shit just that my v8 in 4lo has a little more torque lol. hey "gearhead" is your d30 still open? or well have no carrier? have you wheeled it with the 39s? On a locked 30 you would probley twist shafts hardcore. I twisted 297 jointed stocker shafts with my 34" ltbs. my problem is I'll have the wheel at full lock which is horrible for the strain put on the u joint then I hammer down on the skinny pedal in a low gear, never a great outcome, besides the occasinal movie.

I'm not trying to start some sort of contest, just thought it was strange to see component failure in that situation.. Jeremy also went through a pile of shafts and joints with a 5.2 and that same frontend. Once I get my 4.0 stroked and end up with about ~330 ft/lbs of torque at 2000 rpm, chances are it won't seem so strange to me, haha..

The Duplicolor shit I used on my doors, I just washed it, scuffed the metal up a bit and sparyed away.

Pretty sick rig man

Would love to hear how well those locked 44's hold up to a 5000lb rig turning 38" TSL's being pushed by a V-8 engine

Alloys or not I'm expecting some breakage

My Bluggy held up well turning 38's with a locked front 44 & Yukon alloys, but it weighed 3000lb on the trail & was powered by an old carb'd I6 chevy

Well i havn't updated this in awhile so to bring you up to date, Ive sold my roof rack to get a little lower COG, I have also sence ripped out the rear D44 and replaced it with a dana 70 from a dodge dually, added disc brakes. Had to change out my master cylinder to one with a bigger bore to keep up with the brakes. I also converted the waggy 44 front to 8 lug to match my rear. what all is needed convert a waggy to 8 lug?

97trxuszj
07-18-2008, 03:01 AM
new spindles, hubs/rotors, 3/4 ton chevy 10 bolt or d44 brake backing plates, bearings and seals. The waggy uses 1 5/8" inner and outer bearings, the 3/4-1 ton chevy stuff is 2" inner and 1 5/8" outter. but no need to change stub shaft, brakes, lock out hubs anything else. Stock waggy calipers bolt right on.

I have recently painted my jeep woodland camo, and sold my 38 tsl's for 38x12.5 tsl/sx. Here are some wheeling shots from evans creek 8/23/08:

My buddies bronco totally died. Starter F'd up, and the clutch was full of mud and slipping. so I had to winch him the rest of the trail which sucked as he is a 6k anchor. with no PS.

After our 12hr day, on one single trail that should have taken us 15-20min. All because of one nasty mud hole. I broke a Yukon Alloy Drivers Side stub shaft. The yukon super joint held up though just needs new caps, seals, snap rings, and zerks.

I may be wrong, but isnt a d70 a full width and a waggy 44 the same width as stock zj axles?

Did you shorten the 70 or ad spacers to the 44?

Looks great.

my dana 70 is a dodge dually so its 65.75" wms-wms stock waggy is 61" wms-wms then I added 2" spacers per side. So 65" front 66" rear

i'c also drive the stinger into a wall to bend it up.

i never understood why people point them so far out. they are to stop you form an endo not help you slid up stuff.

love the camo. My cousn just did a Realtree APG-HD camo wrap job on his Nissan truck, looks sweet, was considering something similar, also like the alive drab/military look.... mine needs paint, or something.....

Thanks for the compliments.

Kraqa: the stinger is up about as far as I could before toucing the winch.

The tube fenders are the start of my soon to be exo cage/ internal

Suprisingly the front tube fenders have taken a beating, between the tight trees here Ive watched them slide across, instead of catching and ripping off my fenders. Sane with the rears, I would have lost the right side side window twice if it wasn;t for the rear tubes.

I am going to weld some 1/8" plate between the fenderes and the tubes, then start on some cross bars over hood and cowl for support on the front brs. Also on from the inside tube under headlight to the unibody, where my bumper sheeve is.

Sorry to say he parted out this rig.

I have the suspension, front bumper, winch, lights, and some other parts sitting in my garage waiting to go on my ZJ. :D
