on either the left or right side of the crossmember, there are 2 bolts connecting it to the unibody. of these 2, i cant get the front off on either side. the back 2 came out fine with the assistance of some deep creep. now the front 2 will turn EASILY but arent coming out. WTF?!!

is there a nut on the other side im supposedly magically be able to reach? i cant even see the other side of the bolt so i dont know how im supposed to get a wrench up there to hold onto a nut.

surely one of you has dropped the x-case crossmember before and can shed some light on the situation.

TIA

did a little more research and found the 'zero' had the same problem. seems those are weld-in nuts.

so zero, how the fuck did you end up getting that last bolt out? im guessing i could lift the carpet and probably drill through the floorpan with a hole saw. would that even give me access to that bolt or is there more than just a thin floorpan?

i dont think ill be fucking with it more tonight till i can get a clear plan of action set up. lemme know if you guys have some bright ideas, i wanna have this little problem solved by this saturday when i go to tuttle.

Oh THAT thing..... ;-) What a pain in the ass day that was. I'd say drilling the hole through the floor would be the easiest thing to do. If you like fishing, try tossing a bolt through a framerail hole and use a coat hanger to get it where you need it. Yeah.... just drill the hole....

Heres a pic of what I did to save you time readin'

so you went fishing and got that bolt thru and then put the nut on. did you then just weld it together?.. i dont see how you'd tighten it unless you too cut a hole in the floor.

lets hope you dont need to take that x-member off soon

fuck whoevers job it was to weld those nuts on! i swear if i ever meet that man ill kick him in the junk. :axe:

Yeah, its on there.... not welded, never underestimate vicegrips ;-)

'WHEN' the day comes that i have to mess with it again, there will be a brand new hole in the floor.

so ya, hopefully tommorow i can pick up one from a salvage yard. if not im gonna pound that thing back to as close as normal as possible. then put it back on.

jordan i took it off because when the left front tire droops, the drive-shaft u-joint rubs against it and it makes a nasty if not destructive noise.

o ya, and then after i finished that shit my girlfriend came over and i broke up with her. bitch thought i would sit around while shes busy working constantly only coming to see me once every so often. fuck it i need a new woman, one that actually has time for me.

then i started hittin the captain. i have class in 7 hours so im bout to crash good night kids

Sweet dude, hopefully the other 3 stay put. ;-)

i had to drill a hole on both sides. 2, count em TWO of those weld-in-nuts broke off.

so let me say again: if i find that fucker whos job it was to weld those on, ima kick him squarely in the junk.

and so ya, i picked up a x-member from a salvage yard today for 35 buckaroos, and while i was at work my bro decided to sand and paint the bitch. its perty. were about to go put it back on.

and thats how we flip off people in kansas. maybe you guys are more hardcore with your thumb-in technique? :finga: ill try it sometime

i dont ever remember being called noobton ... but w/e fucker dale :finga:

o ya, finally just got that new x-member in there. couldn't get it to all line up for a while and we were getting pissed at it. then we noticed the mount with the big bushing on the tranny had also been bent back about 15 degrees when i smacked the crossmember. a few nice wacks with the BFH and we were back in business. made it all line up nice and perty. i reversed the 2 broken weld-in nuts so the nuts are on the bottom and the bolt goes thru the floor.

shit is peachy. its like 3 now so ima clean up tommorow. i got 4.5 hours of sleep last night and im looking at 7 max tonight.

family guy freakin sweet collection is calling my name. night

Glad you got everything back together ok. I dread the day I have to pull the crossmember off of mine because I know I'll have to do the same damn thing. I actually got some work done on the Jeep tonight..... well, sort of. I washed it for the first time in like two months! I forgot how good it looks when it's clean...

norton
09-08-2005, 06:30 PM
HA! i couldnt tell you the last time my Jeep got washed, its been longer than 2 months though

ya, the whole job took about 4-5 hours. it was a PAIN IN THE ASS lemme tell you.

i just picked up some spark plugs and wires when i got out of class. any tips on changing the wires? i hate where they put the flux capaciter on the grands .. at least on the ones with 318's. :axe:

No, I don't have any real tips for you except to be aware of the direction of distributor rotation and firing order. (and where #1 is on the disty) I pulled off the old wires and selected proper length on the new wires according to location and routing, not by following the way the originals were routed. Just be sure to use decent quality wires and plugs. There's no need to spend buku dollars on plugs like some people out there that believe everything they see on TV. FWIW I've always had the best luck with the regular AC Delco plugs. Also make sure to get a good quality cap and rotor.

i got duralast wires ($18 and a free lifetime warranty) and autolite plugs ($10-$11 for 8)

i didnt bother with a new cap and rotor. im broke as fawk remember.

ummm ya. i need a beer. :drinkers:

change your wires one at a time. otherwise good luck remembering the firing order and routing and shit. one at a time just makes it easier.
