Ok, here it goes... a little history about my ZJ, and the ongoing buildup.

This is how I got it:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/002.jpg

It already had 31 ATs at stock height.

About two months later I added a BB and uber cool Steel Horse steps.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/003.JPG

Then a frickin semi truck hit me in the back:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/004.JPG

After that was fixed, I got full skids, and a pair of rocksliders. I had a shop make me a exact copy of Kevin's LP-1 Sliders (http://www.kevinsjeepparts.com/zj/zj_sliderz_1.html).
http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/005.JPG

After I got the body protection, I needed tow points. I got Kevin's Radiator Support (http://www.kevinsjeepparts.com/zj/zj_rad_support.html)

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/006.JPG

Before I went on my first offroad trip, I cut the fenders... look at the extreme BB flex.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/008.JPG

On my second trip, I got the first time stuck. Going thru this way was no problem...

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/010.jpg

...but going back, I stuck. I got some mud/water inside, had about 6 pounds of sand in each door, and the speakers were gone. Oh yeah, and my front R&P broke. D30 sucks!

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/011.jpg

Then I added 33x12.5 BFG ATs tires. Still being on a BB, didn't give me much flex... but with 31s it wasn't much more.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/012.JPG

Then I trimmed my bumper a little.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/013.JPG´

...after that, I put in 3" springs with the spacers on top.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/014.jpg

Then I bought a T-Max winch and needed a place to put. This is a little over one year after the sliders. At this time I got some tools, and didn't need to pay people anymore to do this stuff.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/015.JPG

Thats it for the past! Now the buildup starts. :smt003

No more plans I am already doing it... I just haven't had a job for a while so the buildup goes very slowly. Its pretty much cut it in half, tube it, and put portals under it. I'll see if I can put up some pics tomorrow of its current state.

deadman
08-26-2005, 06:01 PM
You cut your fenders for 31's on a BB?

No... I had 31s even without a BB. I've cut my fenders just for the fun of it. You know... Its the same with cutting the rear roof off. You look at pics again, and again, and then you just want to do it.

None really... I've just kept that nick from a long time ago. You know WWF now called WWE. I used to watch that all the time, and was on a wrestling-bb.

stop laughing... :smt003
Then I was thinking about a name for the ZJ... for the buildup. I just thought tombstone fits. Its kinda ironic if I die in that fawkin Jeep, but I couldn't come up with a better idea. :smt003

So... No! I don't powder my skin white and walk around in black clothes. I just suck with coming up for names. You got a better one? Entertain me. :smt033

TrojanMan
08-27-2005, 06:36 PM
Sweet, I was needing some pics like that.. i'm gonna cut mine off similar and make my bumper soon. What did you do with the airbag sensor? Does it have to be kept in one position?

deadman
08-27-2005, 06:52 PM
I threw em out. :smt003

But as far as I know they sense hard deceleration... and I don't think they would need to be in the same location for that. You could mount them somewhere inside the bumper or engine compartment.

TrojanMan
08-28-2005, 05:33 AM
I just wasn't sure if they had some kind of switch that would set off if I tilted it up or something, some cars are like that. I do want to keep the sensors, because it will still be a DD, but we'll see what happens when it comes to cutting time.

deadman
08-31-2005, 03:04 PM
...then I stoped taking pics. I'll get you some closup pics, of the finished bumper.

Here are two pics of it finished:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/016.JPG

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/017.JPG

...well kinda... I still have to round up the shakle mounts.

deadman
08-31-2005, 03:13 PM
So... while the bumper was getting painted, I took out the D30.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/018.JPG

Here the obligatory D30 salute:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/019.JPG

Then I test fitted my new used tires. Thy are 14.5/20 Michelin XLs. They will have to do, untill there is a 44" TSL SX, in size 20. I don't feel ready for 49 Iroks!

deadman
08-31-2005, 03:19 PM
Then I wanted to see how wide it will be with the new axles.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/022.JPG

I don't think it is wide enough for the lift I will need. So either I will get some wheelspacers, or I will flip the wheels, or both. Dunno yet.

Kraqa
08-31-2005, 05:09 PM
What width are you aiming for?

deadman
08-31-2005, 05:42 PM
Something around 90" I guess.
Like in the pic before the last one... with just the tires left and right without the axle.

I'M 88" WIDE WITH 38'S AND A 5"LIFT. oooops sorry about the caps.

Yeah me too! It is taking forever! I lost my job shortly after I started the project, and I haven't found a new one yet. Sucks... I got all the time I need, but no money.

But... you do know it is your fault, that I am doing this, right?

Remember back in your buildup thread:

All these pics are gettin to me... I am already in Photoshop cutting up my ZJ.

one word: SICK! what are you doing suspension wise and for the rear axle?

deadman
09-01-2005, 05:09 AM
Suspension: double triangulated longarms in the rear, front maybe too. I'll have to see if I get clearance issues. Maybe I run only one upper in the front. Shocks and springs will be replaced by coilovers.

Rear axle is the same one as the front. :smt112

Next I took out my interior. I am not going to put it back in... I don't need heat, the aircon will be converted to OBA, no more doors for the computer to tell me I left em open... So, a steering wheel and a switchpanel will do.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/023.JPG

Everybody who took out the carpet, knows this stuff...

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/034.JPG

I want to rhino/herculine my interior, but not over this stuff.

So I took it off... it was a bitch! You can't use a grinder with a flapdisc or something like that. It will just meld, stink, and you get nowhere. I used a scraper like this one:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/upload/23252.jpg

...and a freakin hammer! When everytihng was gone I could use the grinder to smooth it out. It took me a whole week... alright not from morning to the evening, but still way too long. Next time I am probably just gonna leave it and put the herculiner on top.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/024.JPG

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/025.JPG

Then I primed it with zinc spray...

Also I want to give out a big THANK YOU to Lindley... known as Frogger on here.

In AlaskaZJ's writup about the Kung Fu Brakes Upgrade I was wondering how to get the E350 Master Cylinder. Lindley PM'ed me and said that he could get me one when he is back in the states over the 4th of July. (Lindley is stationed in Germany)

He didn't want any money, and said I could pay him when he gets back. When he got back, we were sopposed to meet, but it never worked out. Me not having registered car right now, didn't help much either. He also told me he got a deal, and that he doesn't want any money.

So last Saturday he had to drive past my city, to pick up some relatives from the airport. He told me he will be at my place at 6:30am.

Of course I overslept! ...and what do I find when I finally got up:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/044.JPG

Unbelievable... I get a home delivery from Napa from the states to germany for free... and I can't even get my ass up in the morning.

Lindley doesn't even know me, and he did all that for me... and had nothing to gain, no money, nothing. That really shows how great a guy he is!

@Lindley:

I am terribly sorry that I wasn't there... I set the alarm and all, but it didn't help. I didn't even hear that you rang the bell later at 9:00 or something. My dad told me. I am really thankfull for all you did, and somehow sometime I am gonna make it up to you. If you need help with anything just tell me.

Again thank you
Sascha

Dude, When I stopped by to drop the part off and I saw your Jeep body, then I walked a little further and saw the axles and other stuff, I was thinking dang, now that is a stripped Jeep. I'm glad you over slept because I was running way behind that morning. I just figured you had gone back to bed and given up on me. Anyway, it's no big deal getting you the part. Other people have helped me in the past without expecting anything in return. I'm just returning the favor to them by doing the same for you. I do have one request now that I know where you are. Since I'm going to be over here for at least 4 more years..... When you get the Tombstone up and running again.... You need to take me wheeling. I don't have to drive, just I'll be able to add another country to the list of places I've been 4wheeling. I've already got Iceland and of course the good ole USA. Thanks

Lindley

Good work. This thing is going to bad ass. When I measured mine I was something like 96" or 94" and I think my trailer is like 100". I can't remember. I am much higher though, It seems stable from the small amount of driving I have done. CO's not charged+no swaybar=slinky .

deadman, how much lift do you plan on running?

Dunno... depends on how good my guess will be on the coilovers. It will be on the high side tho, cause I know I will go bigger than the 42 Michelins later on.

I've to get my tires mounted, and the portals reassembled, then I will put the axles back under the ZJ and make my decisision on ride high.

===================

Here a little update... I've put the Mopar ECU on the inside:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/042.JPG

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/043.JPG

Then I took off the front controlarm mount:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/036.JPG

I already bought the box tubing to box the frame...

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/037.JPG

I love the plasma... It goes thru steel like butter! Great tool!

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/039.JPG

I used a piece of wood as a guide, like this you can make clean and straight cuts...

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/040.JPG

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/041.JPG

Before I can start boxing the frame, I've to get the sliders off. Problem! The ZJ is standing on 'em. I am making myself some higher jackstands now, so I can jack it up at the front and back, and get the unirails free. Update in a couple of days.

No my dad is not a midget... the stands are just a little tall. :coffee:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/047.JPG

fine adjustment... the bolt is 1.25"

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/046.jpg

You can put on different heads, depending on what you are supporting.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/048_eng.jpg

With the threaded part these can be infinitely adjusted, and the jeep lifted without a jack/highlift.

Now we were able to lift tombstone higher, removing the smaller jackstands, and removing the rocksliders.

http://jeep.cfasp.de/deadman/History/049.jpg

Now the unirails are free and I can start with the actual work... strengthening the frame. :smt035

Cause you'll never learn.
Cause you can't be happy with what you've got.
Cause there's always something that needs attention, if not, you'll wheel it and break something else.
If everything is mechanically sound, then you need to add some accessories. Got OBA? OBW? OBS? How about putting a little place next to the exhaust manifold to warm your burritos on the trail.

Oh wait..... That's me. :flipoff2:
