now that my HP30 is pretty much finished up I got to wondering, are ZJ knuckles and XJ knuckles identical? I know the TJ knuckles have a different caliper bracket orientation.

My 89XJ knuckles are identical to my 97 ZJ knuckles exception of the hole where the ABS sensor bolts in.

schweet, only thing left is to get a few minor parts. anyone have a part # list for the 6 bolts that hold the unit bearings/hub assy on? also I need the little brake dust shield, I ruined the old one because the hub was rusted to it so all of it got torched off and thrown away.

TJ knuckles are the same.

I'm running an 86 XJ D30 with 00 TJ knuckles and unit bearings and 98 ZJ rotors and calipers.

I wouldn't worry about the dust shields. I kept on getting rocks stuck between them and the rotors and it would wear into the rotors, so I took them all off.

I might have an extra set of bolts in the garage. If I think to look later on, I'll let you know.

If nate doesn't have them, I'm pretty sure I do. I'll try to get you a part # tonight.

Elliot,

Here you go the part number is:
3420 1535 - BOLT, Knuckle to Hub and bearing Mounting

Might also be time for you to buy one of my parts list CD's :smt002

I also swapped in a '88 HP30 and used my '97 knuckles on my ZJ. I did it to keep the ABS. I am using axle shafts out of a '96 XJ with the ABS tone rings and the u-joints. I re-used my ZJ unit bearings. So far everything working OK.

The lower ball joint attachment for the older XJ D30 uses an adjustable nut for balljoint preload. The ZJ style knuckles have a tapered hole directly in the knuckle. I'm running an 85 XJ HPD30 with 96 ZJ outer knuckles and have variable camber issues which could be related to this but not sure yet.

FYI the knuckles from an 89 XJ dont work on a 98 ZJ. who knew. After i tightened them down onto the BJ's, got the bearings on, axle nuts cinched down, my caliper didn't fit. why am i wasting the time of building this MOFO?!? :overkill:

ive been thinkning of doing a hp30 due to outer pinion bearings being shot and dealer wanted $1100 to do this work and replace some other bearings.
it sounds like a real pain in the ass to attempt myself ( with knowing nothing about rebuilding differentials and gears and all that crapola).

Does it sound logical and headache saver to go to a junk yard and get a hp30 and cleaning it up and changing the gear oil/ knuckles and running that?

also what should i inspect on the donor hp30 to make sure it wont need service in a week?

Also about how much was your axle?$$

its basically a bolt in axle with a higher pinion and a stronger ring gear. But i tore mine down, sandblasted, rebuilt it, and polished it to death like a dumbass but whatever. its a good option, just make sure you get a HP30 without the vaccuum disconnect junk on it.

maybee a nooobie question but how do u tell if its " without vacum disconnect?"

a local gear shop would be able to fix that for $200-250 labor + 100 parts. replace all bearings in the frt axle and reset gear. so like $350 tops

a good condition hp30 wil run about $200 complete. get the right gear ratio. you wont need to swap knuckles. ditch the abs while your at it.

hit or miss with making sure the axle is good. check ju or www.naxja.org

hmm $350 tops sounds hellova lot better than 1100 and the time involved doing a swap and the bumps along that road. haha But there arent shit for gear shops around here.

i am looking to do a HP30 up front, but i need one with 4.10 gearing (i know that 4.56 would be better with 35's... it has been beaten to death, but my rear is already built and I dont have the money to change gearing right now). But anyways, Im having a hell of a time finding an HP30 w/ 4.10. Does anyone know of one in a junkyard around them?
Thanks

kenny

very rare

much easier to find a 4.10 lp30 TJ axle

ELLLLLIOTTTTT

not that rare, and you MAY indeed need to swap the knuckles. My 98 ZJ calipers didn't work with the 89 XJ knuckles. First time I've seen it happen though, maybe a fluke?

BTW I got my HP30 for $15. :finga:

were you using zj hubs? i think the xj 4.10's only came with the non 4.0's which i dont see to many of

well im trying to find one that i wont have to do any welding of new brackets. Also, is the lp30 from a TJ as strong as the hp30? I am running 35's, and i dont do much rock crawling, but i do take it up some cars once in a while, but mostly a lot of mud, so I would like something pretty strong.
Thanks

why would u need new brackets?

hp is stronger, but its still a d-turdy

Vac disco axles have the big vac assembly in the middle of the longside shaft....

If you have a cast uca mount on the pass side axle, you've got a vac disconnect.... It's not that hard to swap in your stock zj axle shafts tho.

There's one special seal needed and a block off plate. I think randy's sells a kit.... I remember cue-ball said something about it sometime....

Oh yea - I type pretty good when I'm drunk - just use the back space button a WHOLE lot more. Just left a COC mixer. Fun to see old people getting ripped.

xj 4.10's came on all the 2.8l equipped one's. but they really are not that rare, Jeep sold a ton of those pieces of shit and most of them are in junk yards with blown engines...i got mine with 4.10's for $60 in the first yard I checked. it was about 1.5 yrs. ago, but there was at least one other at the time. there was also at least one with 4.10's that was vac-disco (easy enough to fix).

does 149 bucks sound about right for a hp30 from the pickin pull?

can i run 3.55 gears (stock gears) in the hp even if i have 3.73 in the rear with the crappy 249 t case? or will that pose problems?

LouisianaZJ

about right price

you will ruin the t/c most likely

the brake caliper problem mentioned in this thread:

88 and below d30's have a bolt on caliper bracket
89 up have the caliper mount cast into the knuckle.

it is very obvious, you can see it in the pic posted on the first page.
the new/old style calipers do not interchange.

on a side note - the bolt on pre-89 calpier brackets lend themselves very well to rear dics conversions.
