So I'm trying to put on my new bumper but can't get the old bumpers support brackets off. It looks like a nut welded to the bracket (or perhaps its just incredibly rusted on). Please tell me I don't have to press the stud out or something, its just not budging even with air tools.

2 bolts thread up on both sides. There shouldn't be any stud.

well the "bolts" only have threaded ends. thats why i called it a stud. it goes through the gas tank skid and unibody and holds the brackets in there. with the new bumper I've got it has an actual bolt (with a hex head and threaded end) its just getting this old mess out.

I can't remember, but perhaps that assembly has room to lift up through the holes and out the end of the frame rail? I took them off of the bumper first. Actually, I remember cutting something because mine was rusted, but that was years ago and I don't remember.

get your shit together, we're going WHEELING!

thread two nuts onto them then tighten them together then use a wrench on the top nut. Mine came out when i was undoing the hitch.

I ended up breaking mine off when trying to remove them... I don't know if it was rusted or what. Anyway if you end up breaking off, be careful to not crack the unibody around the bolt. I wasted a lot of time having to fix that little GAM.

Puma,

I used a dremel tool with a cutting disc and just cut them out.

I used a stud removal tool, you know it clamps around the threads and then removes it. Was a bit of a bitch but they finally came out.

still working on it... i might hafta look into one of those stud removal tools, because I can't get anything to work on this POS. Threading the 2 nuts onto the stud didn't work, I ended up stripping the top nut.

what if I welded a hex style bolt head onto the end of the stud? i would seriously hate to go to that much trouble for these stupid bitches but i wanna be done with it.

Get a nut of the correct size. Thread onto stud. Weld the top. Let cool. Remove with wrench or socket.

I used vicegrips

tried that, the above method was quick and effective.

Try bashing your rear bumper on everything you possibly could for 2 years, then mounting tow hooks to the top of it and use it to pull yourself out all the time. Then the studs will pretty much fall out on their own.

If all else fails, plasma.
