I am considering this as my ZJ becomes less and less a daily driver and I am wondering what experiences you guys have had with welding the VC. It makes sense but I havent ever done it.

somebody on here had a pic of theirs. iirc, it held up until they got something better.

I think all you have to do is run a healthy bead and join the two halves.

Mines so far gone I think it friction welded itself. Its my dd but it doesn't do too well at the mall. np231HD on the way. :smt003

yep, that was me. I had amazing luck with it. blew a front axle r&p, both shafts and both driveshafts, and the VC never made a peep.

I 7014ac'd mine on a miller 225. Not the prettiest, but by the noticing the inside splines, the penetration was immense.

right after i welded it:

this was right before I did my 231 swap... no signes of cracking, stress, nothing:

oh ya, and as far as daily driven. I drove mine every day, on both 35's and 36" iroks. I made one trip to florida and back with it as well. I couldn't believe how nice it was to drive. No sudden jerks or anything, the rig was very stable, never torqued over like with the 231 in 2wd, and was really nice at high speeds. the high speeds was probably due to the chain gears being signifigantly larger in diameter than the 231's. That allowed the 249 to spin slower and be more contained than the 231. I used to do 85mph everywhere i went on the 249... then when i had the 231 in, i pulled it in 4wd to see what it was like compared to the old case and it was makin funny noises, pulled the jeep all over the place... I actually missed having the 249 for a bit.

The only thing was, I kept my tire pressure and alignment absolutely perfect. I'd always have the alignment rechecked and kept the tires within a 1/16th of an inch in diameter so that everything was spinning the same speed. I never had tires wear funny at all....and the iroks actually were more quiet than my cheapo Wildcat M/T 35's!

Sorry for the noval, but i went through it and learned from it...so hopefully it helped.

thought i'd just bring this thread back to life and give my experience. i just tried to weld mine and it turns out the oil pump has a brass bearing that rides on the flange of the vc, so make sure you look close at it first because i laid down a fat weld and then couldnt fit the pump on. im sure i could have ground it down and made it work however i just threw in a 231 that i had in my garage instead...
