i just found this forum so hey everybody.

i've been working all weekend installing a 4.5" lift from KOR. i finally got done today and decided to take my jeep out for a test spin. halfway down the driveway i hear something pop. took a look under the jeep and found the dust boot on my front driveshaft twisted to hell. so my question is, do any of you with a '96 or newer ZJ use an extended driveshaft? if not, what length did u set your control arms? i have the JKS adjustable lca's and uca's currently set at 17".

no you have a factory"cv" driveshaft which is shit

you need to swap in a double cardan driveshaft (confusingly enough sometimes also called a cv driveshaft) it has 3 ujoints in it

some ZJs have the better double cardan shaft, if you feel like searching around or have one custom made from www.highangledriveline.com about $300

i know 249's aren't too happy without a front driveshaft. so how long can i go without one b4 something screws up?

I drove w/o the front shaft on two separate occasions, the first time by the stealership and the second out of necessity, and had no noticeable problems. However... I told this to the 4x4 shop I now use and the mechanic was surprised that MY 249 was still in working order. Something about how these T/Cs are designed to put power to the front shaft constantly and without the front shaft there to take the power going to the front you kill the VC (viscous coupler). So they can but I would not recommend it. Just my experience.

Call Kevin. He may take a while getting back to you but he'll know about his own stuff. But if you do try it in a parking lot or a field so you can control any possible carnage. Maybe you should consult your shop. or call the stealership. Info is still free.

the problem isn't the length on that factory driveshaft, it's the operating angle. That CV shaft does not like angles greater than stock, your other option is grabbing a shaft from a ZJ w/a u-joint at the axle end... they didn't all come with that POS cv shaft. As stated before, most people refer to a double-cardan d/s as a CV, your CV has a double-cardan at the tc end & the CV at the axle end.
