My buddy brought this up tonight when I said my only vice with the Heep was the fact that it's automatic, so he says 'why not swap it?'
So that's the basis for this thread. I did a bit of searching and didn't find much, some people have done it but no real info.

Anyone have any info to share about converting a ZJ to a manual tranny?

A guy who lives in greenville, sc did it a year or 2 back... I think he did some sort of a "writeup" or progress thread on JU.

Wasn't a 5 speed an option on early ZJs?

well its a big job to say the least. I used an ax-15 and bellhousing from a 95 xj and found that the OE zj clutch master/slave cylinder is available at jeepshop.com. My zj already had the holes in the firewall for the master cyl so all i had to do was pop the cover plate off and bolt that sucker up. getting the clutch pedal to work was a bit more of a trick. cut a hole in the floor where the auto shifter used to be and thats basically it. If your actually going to do the swap i'll let you know whatever it is you want to know but its way too much to put in a thread like this and i just don't have the time to do a write up. I gave killerzj over on JU some help with his swap but he started with the wrong bellhousing and was screwed from the beginning (i told him that but he didn't want to change bellhousings).

but anyway i LOVE :prayer: the 5 speed, its the best mofication i've ever done to the zj. and if your worried about the ax-15 i've put 50kish on it, i run 35's and wheel it hard enough to know its strong enough for my driving style at least. the biggest difference is being able to compression brake alot easier. Its so much easier to maintain momentum and maintain a crawl speed. I wheel alot with TranceZJ and his is automatic, both jeeps have there advantages, i just prefer the ruggedness and dependability of the 5 speed.

Can you give me an idea on all the parts?
Do you need a ZJ manual pedal assy with the clutch pedal and smaller brake pedal?

If I gather all the parts then I'm pretty sure I can get the swap done.

zjeepin,
Working on swapping a 95' 4.0L ZJ over from the POS 42re to a AX15, NP231J, NP231C combo myself

Drivetrain stuff I'm not sweating, but the pedal setup and now the bellhousing I'm concerned about
been searching all over hell's (read internet) creation, believe it or not there's not much info out there

I PM'd you with a couple questions

Thank you for any help you can provide

how about swapping it into a zj that is OBD2... any issues there?

also, did you need new driveshafts?

You'll need new driveshafts as the manual tranny is shorter.
As for the ECU, I dunno.

only difference is you have to cut in to the firewall instead of removing a plate (for the master cyl)

If you buy my jeep (if the current deal doesn't go through) it will be much much easier. I promise.
