View Full Version : Pully failure on power steering pump, looking for advice.

Over the weekend I headed up to the Niagra Rim trail with some friends. Along the way I heard a short buzzing sound from the engine and about 10 seconds later the coolant temp shot up, power steering went AWOL, and the engine shut off. Fun fun. Anyway, it turns out that the pully on the power steering pump broke and took the belt with.

I could just replace the pully, but the pump is old and leaking and ready to be replaced. I've read about the PSC pump, but figure the stock one is fine for my uses. My two questions are:

1) Anybody have a reason why it would be better to get the real jeep pump as opposed to one from Napa or Autozone? Any hints on where to get a good price?

2) I'm wondering why the pully failed. The PS pump did not seize, it looks like the pully just broke. Any ideas on other possible causes?

Thanks.
