So...I started out with a '93 ZJ 4.0 4x4 w/ a 242
that i bought bone stock from a friend for $1k. Then, like a typical high school kid wanting to lift my Jeep for looks, I went out and bought an RE 4.5" kit with 2" spacers so I could run 35's. Looking back on things, I really wish I would've gone long arms first, but I was young and stupid, so what the hell. It never really rode right. I had bad d/w, after dealing with it for a while I took it apart and found a big ass crack under the RE trackbar mount. Replaced it with kevins TB conv, got it welded and gussetted and drove it around like that for a while. Still had dw occasionally but not as bad. About a month ago I went through my 3rd rear main seal since i bought it. Took it apart and my crank is trash, bearings are destroyed, so I decided its time to rebuild... AND I decided I needed to get a personal loan, not having any credit is a bitch, so the old man co-signed w/ me and here I am.

Plans:
F/R d44's| 4.56's|OX's|Warn premiums| mini spool in the front, detroit in the rear
Rustys 8.5"-9" XJ coills, RE 4.5" ZJ fronts in the rear
RE Radius arm front/triangulated 4 link rear/custom 1/4" subframe
bulletproof steering
37" SSR's (IROK's next :snakeman: )
Waggy Steering box

So thats pretty much the basics, its not gonna be crazy but it will get me through tellico, uwharrie, river rock, and the mall parking lot

Pretty sure I found my dw problem as well...went to pull the steering and the pittman arm nut was finger tight (or loose I guess) and when I pulled the nut the pittman arm fell off :finga: That hole is supposed to be tapered isnt it?

agree

the jump from a hp30/D35c to 44s ain't worth it.
Go with a 60 front, and a 60/70/14b in the rear... It is nice trying to get up somewhere, and not wasting a second worrying about axles.

I was gonna go with an HP44/60 setup, but the deal fell through, then I found these for cheap so I went ahead and did it. It'll have superiors and CTM joints as soon as I break my first shaft, which shouldnt be too long

Cue-Ball
06-22-2005, 10:51 AM
I agree that the 44/44 is not the way to go. You are much better off with 60/60.

My next go around will be full width 60's or something like that.

Although 60's are the shit, noo doot aboot it, I'm getting kinda sick of the "they're worthless" attitude around here. They're 10x better than what he had, especially with superiors and CTM's.

60's have their disadvanteges too, like weight and one bigass pumkin.

Kraqa
06-22-2005, 11:04 AM
there not worthless. its just that if he;s gonna spend the money and the time to do it from a bank loan make that money count. he is paying like what 11% intrest on it.

keep in mind matt your hold up great. but your runnign 35's. he wants to run 37" SSR's not exactly the lightest tire in the world.

Jcbzj
06-22-2005, 11:22 AM
Im paying 6% interest, i would be paying like 14.5" without a cosigner. a 60/60 setup would have cost me a good bit more money, and Im not planning on going any bigger than 37's(thought about doing 38's, but decided better), which should be fine with superiors and CTM's on the 44's.

Kraqa
06-22-2005, 02:08 PM
no they wont.

37's are pushing it with a 5000 LB rig on dana 44's and chromo shafts. with CTM's.

Depends how you drive. I wouldn't do it, but it's not like 38" TSL's haven't survived on ZJ's until the balljoints ripped aprt (read: Clayton).

If you're really that insistent on these axles and 37's, I'd suggest 37" MTR's as they measure a lil' smaller and weigh a LOT less. Otherwise, stick with 35/36 unless you really want to constantly be a pain in the ass on the trail.

Well that's just a number I pulled out of thin air, but my stroker is gonna cost about 1200 or 1300. Haven't looked at all the receipts yet to get a grand total.

Bad attitude man. Build it right the first time. Sell what you got now and go buy the correct axles.

I have 2 front HP60's availble... i'll make you a deal for the sake of doing it right

More and more I wish I would have gone with a 60 rather than spend all the time and $$$ building my HP30.

Oh well next time around it will be HP60/60.

Spool and hubs from PeakEmpire
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a238/jbraswell/DSCF0048.jpg

Im hoping to get the axles together in the next week or so..then its time to replace the whole bottom end of the motor, and finally off to get driveshafts. But then again thats only the plan, we'll see what happens. Looks like no GSSE this year

Ha, I could have told you that 2 months ago.. :finga: It happened to me last year on my build dragging out too, so you're at least in good company.

The build is looking good though, you are putting some nice parts on there.

Oh well next time around it will be HP60/60.

i have been happy with my alloyed/yukon joint locked Hp30, D44. i have only had 2 trips on it so far though. but the last trip out i was full throttle thru some shit and shock loaded the front end several times. no breakage so far

balljoints anf hubs will have a limited lifespan i think though

"F/R d44's| 4.56's|OX's|Warn premiums| mini spool in the front, detroit in the rear "

yeah, put the detroit up front and run a full spool in teh rear

a spool up front is beyond sucking, even with hydro assist

I am planning to have fun. It's a shame that so few people want to come out and wheel, especially so close to home.

I don't know what the numbers are or what they have been, but I do know it can always be one more if you want to come.

I'm with ATL ZJ on this- more people need to come to GSSE! Tellico trails are always a blast whether you are a beginner or expert wheeler.

havent updated this in a while:
picked up a ditchwitch 60 rear (16 spline), got a 35 spline carrier and 35 spline yukon shafts. My links are ready to go, just waiting on tabs from blutorch.

Also just got a free fullwidth d44 front out of an old Ford Pathfinder van, putting the detroit in that, sleeving the parts mike steering that I already had.

Its gonna take me a bit longer now, but Im thinking it will be for the better. Probably going to run 38" TSL's now. We'll see

do your 35 splin shafts fit in you d60 rear axle tubes?? IIRC you need to enlarge the tubes past 1.5" to fit them. unless you have some version of the 60 i am unaware of.

Jcbzj
09-06-2005, 08:29 PM
Yeah I have to bore the spindles out, I work right down the street from a machine shop so Im gonna get them to do that and cut my shafts to length at the same time

Kraqa

wow, you bought 35 splin shafts and are going to have them cut down?? you knwo that they will never be as strong as they are now after you cut them. you need to roll the splines into them from the factory to make them as strong as possible. you might as well just rock 31 spline and save the money and trouble.

Jcbzj
10-27-2005, 10:39 PM
Havent updated in a while, got my 60 bored out, 35 spline shafts, ended up with a '77 hp44 front with cast in wedges, modified radius arms with johnny joints, got my rear truss finally, modified stock crossmember to bolt up to subframe (first one was for later mount), and also go 8 lug front parts for the hp44. Now hoping to be done for christmas time but who knows

ATL ZJ
10-28-2005, 10:44 AM
Just curious, who bored your 60? I've got a buddy that is looking for someone that'll do it for a decent price.

Jcbzj
11-02-2005, 12:23 AM
Powder Springs Machine Co... not too decent of a price though.

Got my shafts cut down and splines rolled for $20 today, set the rear pinion angle and tacked on the truss. Im finally starting to have time to work on the jeep almost daily now, so its starting to move along

have gotten a little bit done, still need to do the front, I am not running the modified ford radius arms anymore. Had them done, looked great, but my caster was way off and I didnt feel like modifying the subframe, so Im going to run a more conventional radius arm setup or a 4 link. Going to go with some shorter springs in the rear and softer springs in the front

"Dibble" em and lose some of that weight.. But whatever you do, get it done by august so you can ride at GSSE. :D
