Torque Specifications

For all the times you have been working on you jeep, or what we call our jeeps, and realize that your FSM doesn’t have the torque specs for that ford 9” or Dana 60 you swapped. Instead of going out to buy a FSM just for a rear axle. I have done some research and have put together this nifty list of torque specifications for common axles that we swap into our rigs.

If anyone finds these numbers don’t work or differs from you FSM please let me know. I got these numbers from two FSM’s I have and the Internet. I’m sure over the years and with all the different models of axles the torque numbers may change. This is only a guide.

I hope this helps.

interesting to note that the hated D44al has a bigger pinion at 1.625 than a ford 9", and the same size as a D60. I dont think anyone has broken the ring gear on their 44al. too bad it has those damn c clips.

I am one of the few who apperciate the "dreaded" Dana 44a. I had one in my TJ, trussed and locked, and was very pleased with the result. Good axle, as long as you truss and skid it. The axle shafts are 30 spline. You could go down to 4.56 gear ratio with the axle. Rear discs made the C clip design not so bad. The aluminum center section made for a lighter rear axle if you were interested in weight reduction.

The issue with the 44A was never strength....simply lack of aftermarket support, and the fact that the aluminum housing gets beat up on the trail, and that it likes to eat bearings.

exactly what I was trying to convey. The axle tubes apparently liked to wallow out in the center section sleeves as well. Trussing usually solves this problem. I had an integrated skid in with the truss so the center section wouldnt take a beating on the rocks.

FYI the little book that comes with Yukon gears has all this info. I keep a copy in my toolbox.

if you get a wj version the alxe doesnt have C clips, i had no probems running 35" tires till i filled the thing up with water and sand and cooked the bearings
