This is not your typical will this size tire fit question. I am moving up from a 30/8.8 combo with Clayton LA's and 35's to 14b/79' Ford 44 fullwidth. I will be cutting the fenders and using the sledge as much as possible but still want the full bodied semi-clean look. I currently have custom coils netting me somewhere between 6.5"-7.5" of lift and don't plan on going up much if ANY at all if possible. I plan on running a 12.5 wide tire still but don't know if I should be looking at more of a 36-37" range or idealy I would like to run a 38" with the huge 14b. ANyone with experience with this size tire...is this possible fittment wise while still keeping a clean look. I am speaking fittment only. I don't want to start a 38" tire front 44 debate. Any info or experiences shared would be appreciated. Pictures would be great too! Thanks

This is my rig on 38's prior to fender chopping. The axles are pushed forward and back using the custom suspension but I don't remember how much.

Im planning on running 38's as well..axle placement is the main thing, the rear is probably where you're going to run into problems. The rear wheel wells in ZJ's were simply not designed to hold 38"s

Thanks for the replys! Troy and Tommy, how much lift do you guys run. Is anyone with Claytons kit running 38's? Just curious if his arms will allow me to move the axle enough. They maybe moved as far as they can right now with my 35's as I have not trimmed the fenders at all and my 35's clear with the 6.5-7.5" of lift. . How much thread do I need left in the arms?

I run 4.5" custom coils up front with 2" raised spring perches. The front's loaded down with a bumper made of 1/4", HS9500 winch and an I-6 under the hood. The rear is on 2" raised spring perches, OME front springs and I think 1" spacers since the raised perches didn't do me enough justice. Here's a picture of the rig after the fender trimming. I also had to extend the rear bumpstops about 1" because the rear fenders were clearancing the swamper lugs. I have not limited the turning radius beyond the stock F-250 settings (if I remember correctly) and my tires will rub some on the inner front fender well at full lock in some situations.

Most likely to much lift. I have some adjustability and will most likely lower it some. I really haven't measured it to be honest.

True 37's (measure full 37" mounted at 10 psi (I haven't measured them at 6 psi)). Sitting next to my buddies 38x12.5 SX's the are slightly taller.

3 year old, heavily used RE 4.5" coils on 2" raised perches in front. The passenger side rubs on the inner fender when it comes down from a jump or something---otherwise no rubbing.

Rear, well, it's not quite the same but they fit just fine.

I'm still 107 so I haven't done too much to my WB.

And I know you don't want to hear it, but I only broke 7 shafts, 4 joints and 5 hubs in the first month of this year. I think I broke 8 shafts and about a dozen hubs last year with the smaller and lighter 37" MTR's. I have alloy shafts now, but I haven't really pushed them hard yet--I have blown a hub with the alloy shafts. I know you don't want to hear it cause you obviously know what you're doing--why else would you put a 44 under a 5500 lb loaded trail beast on 38's.

FWIW, Clayton ran 38's on his rig when it was fullbodied if I remember correctly.

5500lbs? Shit, my tow rig doesn't even weigh that much.

Stock ZJ WB is 106"

Stock WB is 106? Are you sure?

Thats true, 5500 lbs is pretty unrealistic. You take a 4000 lb rig, ad 500 lbs of drivetrain/suspension, 200 lbs of tires (more than that if you're going to run 38" swampers and bead locks), 200 lbs of bumpers, sliders, winch, skidplates, tools, spares, cooler, passengers,.....no way it could get up to 5500 lbs ;)

I'm just going by the figures done by those that have actually gone and weighed their built grands. Mike Lib for example, 35" mtr's, tera 50/60, TR bumpers, winch, and the usual trail tools etc weighed in at over 5500 lbs.

You may be surprised at what rigs weigh. My rig is a feather weight compared to most of you guys, and I bet it weighs in at close to or over 4000.

What do you tow with? My 3/4 ton diesel weighs 7k (I just read that somewhere so it's not factual--never actually weighed it)

hey my desiel weighed it at 7,800 than I added a shell on the 8 ft bed, and 2 5 gallon fuel containers with foot lockers full of crap in the bed so I would say roughly 8,000 lbs. FYI dont get rear ended by a big desiel pickup their kill you in just about anything.

ZJ is 106" wheelbase going by the info in my owners manual, where they have the specs and all.

You might be right on the heavy ZJ thing and my 5500 diesel truck thing too.

I haven't actually weighed my stuff, so really I dunno. I would gett it's somewhere around 4500.

My truck is a Dodge 2500 quad cab shortbed. I dunno what it weighs, but now that I think about it, 5500lbs is a bit light considering the engine alone is like 1000 lbs.

For some reason I was thinking ZJ's are 107, but I don't know where that number came from. I matched my WB to what it was before I chopped it--which was 107. I guess I didn't figure that I had the adjustable arms on it which probably pushed it out an inch or so over stock.

I must have really pushed mine back ...I am 108.5

I thought I had only pushed my axle out about an inch but with the lift and the axles coming in I must have moved these puppies alot...
