Ok, i have seen this site on JU and Jeepforums for a while now, and I need some help. I have been doing research between the two forums on the 318-360 swap for about 2 months now, and up until yesterday (after i already have the 360 in my garage, and my 318 out) the harmonic balancer/flexplate has never come up. Now i have a 318 and a 360, but dont want to put the 360 in until everything is correct. Do I have to switch out the harbonic balancer/flexplate? Everything seems to bolt up fine, but i dont know if there is a difference between the two that needs to be changed. Also, if I do change out the flexplate, will it still work in my 94 grand cherokee torque converter, or do I have to swap out the torq. conv. too (please tell me no.. lol)
Thanks guys... and hello.

Kenny

Please only post if you have done this swap, or you know 100% what you are talking about... I am very frustrated and need some solid answers
Thanks in advance

Well, since your 318 is already out, it's just a matter of taking the flex plate off your 5.9 and going over to your Jeep and holding it up to the torque convertor. If the bolt holes line up, then you've got a match.

Unless of course you already put the 5.9 in, and are having issues mating the tranny to the engine, and you've bent your flex plate. Make sure the flex plate on your 5.9 isn't bent or warped by the goons at the salvage place or something. It will make your life 10 times easier to invite a few friends over while you mate the engine and tranny, because there's no way you can be in 3 places at once while you pry, adjust the engine hoist up and down, lower the transmission on the jack, etc. Hopefully all this works out for you. I considered swapping a 5.9 in my Jeep, but the lack of information on the internet about the swap and the need for a vehicle ASAP turned me away from it.

i would do that, except that i got a reman. 360 from thunderbolt engines, so it did not come with the flexplate. I will try to provide a write-up when I am all finished.

is this the right flexplate?http://store.yahoo.com/chucker54/19360mag.html
also, when i get the harmonic balancer/flexplate. Is there any certain way that the flexplate needs to be mounted because of the weight?

The flex plate is indexed. It will have a notch on it. The notch on the flex plate should match up with the notch on the end of the crank. How much did that reman 360 set you back, anyway?

it really wasnt that bad. The engine was $1050 + $600 for shipping (includes sending the core back to them) + $500 core.
Its a full longblock, just w/out the parts I need... lol. They also got it to me very quickly also. Great place to deal with.... Highly recommended.

So you dropped 2100, but in the end it will be more like 1600? Not bad at all. I spent like 1200 on my salvaged unit.. but then again it came with EVERYTHING and dropped right into place.

Look up a few post to chew on this one for a 5.2 liter swap to a 5.9 liter swap. We are finding a few problems with the one we got that was done.

well the swap is done, and everything seems to be fine... just have to get the taurus 3.8l e-fan to finish it up.
Thanks for the help.

Kenny

I'll make a general quick write-up this week for all the future swaps
