So if I lost my mind and decided to regear this craptacular axle... are there any gears available for the 44a yet? I know that at one time there wasn't, and a quick search made it look like there still wasn't.

Is it possible to get a factory trac lock without selling your soul at the dealership?

If it's a thick gear, any reason why a spacer couldn't be used between the crown gear and the carrier? Course you'd have to know the width...

Also, is it a 30 spline case? If it is, why couldn't any full case locker work with a crown gear spacer? I'm sure there's a reason, but that's why I posted in the Newb section.

Thanks

I called Randy's Ring and Pinion a few months ago looking to see what kind of LSD is available for the Dana 44a. The tech guy I spoke to said there was a Auburn gear one and a Detroit True-trac made for the AL44. The Detroit was about $350 I think, and the Auburn Gear one was slightly less. I think there might have been a few others, but those were the only two I can remember.
I've had good luck with the True-trac in my Cherokee for a few years. It has really good street manners and does better than a trac-lock off-road.
Hope this helps.

regular lockers wont work b/c the D44al is c-clipped
iron 44's are semifloating

dont use a spacer just get the necessary thick gears, they are cheap

90% sure it is still 30spl.. may be wrong

definitely a 30 spline,c clipped, waste of an axle. whoever the retards who assembled these things incorrectly should be shot. plenty of cars have had aluminum differentials and dont have the bearings go out in 53k miles.

Dude...all Jeep axles have a problem with the bearings. I've done 2 Dana 35's and 1 D44A in the past 2 days with bad carrier bearings.

As far as the D44A's reputation, I feel it's actually an alright axle and withstands abuse OK. Biggest problem I have with it is the lack of lockers for it. When you consider just about everything in it is at least as stout if not more so than an iron 44. They even take D60 pinion yokes.

4.56's are available for it from a few sources.

you going to get a locker. so what your going to pay 400 and it go's pop pop pop everythign you turn a coner. why not weld the open carrier and have it go chirp chirp. welding is free and works just fine.

might i add that i welded my 70 today and it is freekin awsome the 38 don't even chirp on the road. just scrub.

So would TJ D44 axle shafts work in a D44a?
Maybe rubi shafts would work too???

Nothing but other 44a crap works in these. And at that you would have to either buy new or the used stuff would have to come from a simillar axle, ie ZJ for ZJ/WJ for WJ. I looked into it.

If there's a limited slip available for the 44a I might consider nixxing my whole 8.8 swap and just regearing the axle I have. It'd be sooooooooo much less labor intensive.
