I was soldering some battery cables tonight with rosin core lead solder and didn't wear a mask/ breathing filter... Now my throat hurts, and I've read that almost 100% of inhaled lead reaches the bloodstream. I quit for the night so hopefully I'll be alright, but you could potentially get lead poisoning from it. It's easily overlooked, but just be careful when soldering, because it's not great for you.

I don't even want to know how much of that shit I've inhaled. I used to race RC trucks when I was a kid and did TONS of soldering and never wore any sort of mask or protection.

if you don't want to use a mask just use lead free solder, that's what I do....

I'm guilty of this so often.. I can't even count how manyt thousands of times I've used it without a mask.

Hmm, I've never had to solder anything. :)

More than likely you didn't inhale any lead - soldering does not get it hot enough to vaporize the lead. I'm betting your throat is sore because of the rosin which is a toxin and is known to cause cancer. It is definately a lung irritant.

The manufacturer of the solder should have an MSDS available.

The good news about lead is it does eventually leave your bloodstream. It never completely is gone, but we have to be tested at work bi-monthly for lead levels in the blood, and if its above the threshold, we can't work on sites with lead present for three months. Then we get tested again, and if its low enough, we go back on site.

Gotcha. It told me to drink 2 glasses of water or milk if it was swallowed, and then to go to the hospital if I had internalized a large amount. So I chugged 2 huge glasses of milk, and got pretty nauseous from filling myself up that fast. :drinkers: :smt003
