View Full Version : 8.8 Overflowing

Anyone else have problems with gear oil pumping out of your 8.8? How much oil do you guys run? I filled mine until it was full, about 5 quarts, and it's running gear oil out.

The vent location is where the ABS sensor used to be. I had it on the axle tube before and it did the same thing as well.

Pinion is tipped about 18*

I overfilled mine a little bit (we're talking not much here folks) and it started puking axle seals... I think 8.8s in general don't like gear oil

From what I've read the correct way to fill an 8.8 isn't to fill it up till its pouring out. It has a specified amount and its not where its pouring out. The abs sensor probably isn't going to work as the vent hole location unless the tube is really long. Ring gear throws oil right out the hole. 18* is a lot of angle.

since the pinion is pointed up pretty steep, and since the 8.8 fills from the front you have to measure out the factory fill capacity for an 8.8 then just fill to the specified quantity, if no a little less

I fill mine til it runs over. It pumps it out the fucking hose constanly. My hose is like 5 feet long too. Doesn't seem to come out by the axles so I really don't have any problem with it.

18* isn't all that steep since I run a SYE.

Yeah I fill until it comes out. Vent over the ring gear thing... the holes aren't in line with the gear spinning, so "in theory" it should have worked. I just plugged the vent up and ran it all weekend without problems

Anyone know what Ford says to fill an 8.8 to?

5.5 pints

I put about 3/4 of a gallon (whatever the fuck that is in the other measurements) in mine and it's doing pretty good. I just can't keep the damn Crane cover sealed up.

Now if I put the 5.5 pints, (2.5 quarts) am I going to burn up pinion bearings? That's half of what I put it in to bring it to the fill plug.

Which do you value more, seals, or your pinion turning?

IMO, overfill to properly lube the pinion, but don't grossly overfill. Ford's specs are based on a stock, super shallow pinion angle, and probably have a lot less to do with the lifespan of the seals than they do with lubrication of the gears.

I don't even see how overfilling is a problem. It should squirt out of the vent hose before doing any damage to anything, right? I'd overfill.

over fill it too much it will just foam up

And squirt out the breather tube until the fluid level is acceptable, right?

and not lube and fry yur bearings

Who needs bearings anyway.

just buy one of those nifty clear covers then you will knwo when to stop filling it. :finga:

Something that I don't see brought up yet, did you use the proper fluid? Had a 96ish Exploder in the shop yesterday and it takes synthetic 75W140 plus an extra friction modifier. If your fluid won't handle the heat it could possibly be causing your problem.

ATL ZJ, I'm not sure what you mean by valuing the seals? It's pumping out the vent, which is quite annoying. If all my gear oil is going out the vent, the bearings arent' getting lubed to good. I just plugged up the vent and I've been running it like that for the time being.

JpRngr... I'm running 80w90 in it. I'm not sure about the heat. The hottest my diff got (still breaking in gears) was 185* Compared to a broken in 14bolt, D70 and D60, which ran around 135*
