Curious on this. When you dump the pan and refill, how many quarts? I did mine, and I'm on my 6th quart and the thing is still low. It's good, I take it for a spin and it will start slipping. When I check it is down like a quart. Always has done this.. and takes a few times to get it to stop doing that. Just me?

Na, me too.

Yep - you think you've got it filled, and wait a bit, and its low again.

I think its just the fluid taking so long to settle down that tiny filler/check tube.

Yeah that's pretty normal.. My 42RE stays thirsty for a while after a fluid change.

A full 42RE is 8.5 quarts.

To properly fill it up, leave it in neutral with the brake on. Put fluid in, get in the jeep and run the tranny through all the gears, stopping in each one momentarily. Get out and check level. Once your satisfied with the level, keep a few quarts with you and drive for a little bit, check the level after you've given it a few miles, top off if needed.

I dunno, maybe so. I'm not a newbie, no one's ever asked, and it's not a retarded question about a budjet boost, so I dunno.

The next time I will keep track of how many quarts I end up using and I'll just dump that much in there I think.

TrojanMan, yeah that's exactly what I do. You'd think after running it threw the gears a few times that it would be close. I started out with 4 I think. Fired it up, ran threw gears and it wasn't even enough for the Jeep to move. Put in 1 quart, ran threw gears, still a quart low. Another one and was ok. I drove it around a bit yesterday and it was about a quart low. So the pan and tranny cooler/lines holds like 8 quarts so far.

I think a pan change is supposed to drop 4-4.5 quarts, the rest stays in the torque converter. Maybe you're leaking somewhere?

Yeah pan was dry, so was the valve body, tranny cooler and all the lines.

Nope, it's a B&M cooler I've been running for several years.
