I have a 1997 jeep zj with the v8 and a 231 t-case... 8.8 swap...

recently I was driving down the mountain coasting at about 55-65 mph suddenly the revs drop to about idle and I hear this horrible loud grinding noise coming from the transmission area. A few seconds later the revs pick up again and the grinding stops. It will continue to do this back and forth until I put my foot on the gas. As long as my foot stays on the gas pedal slightly it doesn't act up. It still does it with the OD off.

Any help would be appreciated... I hope my transmission isn't on it's way out the door.

Thanks in advance.

Check the fluid level.

finally figured it out and got it fixed... apparently the transfercase came unbolted from the tranny. I had a local shop do a rebuild after I broke the input shaft. I guess if you want something done right... do it yourself.

Do it yourself is right!

Man, I don't even trust someone else to put the proper air pressure in my tires let alone work on my vehicles.
