pretty sweet chart. shows max torque, fluid capacity, weight, and approximate vehicle weights in both standard and metric measurments. Looks like every TC NV makes, including 3 kinds of 242 (242, 242HD, 242HD AMG)

Have fun :partyman:

looks like out of the 3 stock TCs the 242 was the least strongest, by far

and the weakest case they have made :tease:

Which doesn't surprise me, considering one its the base model and two its on the inline 6 models, not the V8.

But look at the 242 HD :axe:

5 bucks to the first to break a 241HD on the trail. Look at the 271 and 273!

Makes me glad I picked up a Rubi 241HD.
5 bucks if I break it? I'll remember your offer as it went in during last weeks thrash fest build up. Couple more weekends of fine tuning and it should be ready for a trial run.

Only thing is you have to break it from usage (like going up over an obstacle or something), landing on it and snapping it doesn't count.. nor does something due to bad install. But if you do break it just by using it, i'll send you 5 bucks

Holy shit @ the 241HD

Amazing how much stronger it is than a 231. Good thing that I swaped a 242 in mine. :shake:

The only thing (and the only reason i'm keeping my 242 over a 231) a 242 has over a 231 is full-time 4wd.

I was always under the impression that the NP249 was a fairly strong transfercase despite it's VC shortcomings. I'd heard that it was a good deal stronger than the NP231 anyway.

I'm in desperate need of a better transfer case. I'm tired of my NP249 but the input shaft issues have always kept me from attempting the mod. I wonder what sort of transfercases the Dodge 5.2 or other 5.2 vehicles had behind them?

Thats why I took the 242... I got tired of the VC in the 249, but I still wanted 4hi.

But now my ZJ will be a trailerqueen, I don't need 4hi anymore. And I think my 42" tires will destroy my 242. The 241 looks like it can handle that. I gotta do some research! :smt033

I doubt the TC will be my weak point, but we'll see. Still need to iron out the linkage range of travel, then fine tune the axle angles and alignment, lots of little things. Then it's time for some testing. :supz:

@DND:

Did the 241 swap right in?

DND

It bolted right up to the 46RE with no issues, ie. input shaft length/spline. I had to swap over the position switch from the 249 and add some spacers for depth of the plunger. I doubt the VIC will indicate properly, but no biggie that panel is coming out anyway. Other than that I just need to re-work the linkage a bit to get proper travel for all positions. Oh, the front output is a 1330, I swapped my 1310 yoke from the 249. I transfered the front 1330 yoke to the rear output to replace the flange and damper unit. Stock front D/S is okay so far, first wheeling test is yet to come though.

I have a 231D in mine from A dodge truck With a 5.2 .. I still had to change the Input...

But it was a Manual tranny so maybe one that was behind a 518 (Didge version of the 46RH/RE) would work..

Go get one.. Worst case scenario you have to swap the input.. Its really not that hard..

I am actually thinking about selling mine when I get the manual tranny in..

if you know what your doing you could swap the input in 3 hours. its not hard at all.

x2...

I did my most recent input swap in under 2 hours, and that was with a crappy pair of snap ring pliers...

Make sure you have very nice external lock ring and snap ring pliers handy if you plan on getting into this though.

You know who to call when/if you ever decide you want to get rid of that thing...

It's not the TIME or the skill set that I lack, it's the fact that the gear cut might be different, and I might end up having to buy a 100+ dollar input shaft for a case I'll probably pay 100 bucks for...

No worries. Overall, I'd say very simple swap for what is gained. IMHO

yeah... the Rubicon TC is much stronger that the 231. But if you did a short shaft kit in your 231 you make it's max torque spec much stronger. The limit for a stock 231 is at the rear output shaft. If you did a short shaft swap like from JB conversions your shit is going to be much stronger. I've seen a couple trucks where the planetary gear reduction blew up before the aftermarket output shaft.
