Do you carry a 35" spare and if so where do you put it?

I am guessing that the roof would be rather tough to get it on and off of, but since I am going with 35's I figure I better start thinking about where to put the spare sooner than later.

Yea I know, I was just hoping there was an easier way. The TR rear bumper I have does not have a tire carrier and am not sure how easy it would be to build one onto it.

That's what I was thinking.

I would LOVE to fit it in the back atleast for now. I do plan on getting one of Kevin's roof racks and then throwing the tire up there but at 8" of lift that might be pushing it.

Chase,

Is there a wheel in that tire or is it just the tire?

Looks like just a tire and that might be why it fits.

JohnBoulderCO

Another idea, use your full size current spare tire, just don't air it down and put it on the front.

That will work fine for a short distance, it's bigger then a donut tire.

don't do it, i used to have the whole roof rack tire carrier junk on top of mine but ditched it after i about flopped.

How much different is size is okay to run?

I know for a fact a 33 will fit in the stock location and I am getting a mount from AW that he uses. Would a 33 be acceptable as a spare if the rest were 35's?

I could always sell off the spare 35 I am getting and just pick up a junker 33 for use as a spare.

JohnBoulderCO
05-04-2005, 05:17 PM
If you are open, it won't matter. But I wouldn't drive longer or faster then you had too. If you have a detroit, spool or QD it's gonna be hell. That's why I said front.

Cue-Ball

For the time being I will be open in the front.

JohnBoulderCO
05-04-2005, 05:23 PM
There will be a slight stagger, but nothing like a Sprint car, they have different size tires front and rear and are locked in the rear.

I would put it in the front and take it easy to the gas station, tire store ... if you ever had a flat.

A 35" spare isn't too difficult to fit in the stock location. You just need to modify the stock holddown. It's tight, but it fits.

I could never get my 35" x-terrain to fit in the stock location. The rear hatch wouldn't shut. I just laid it flat in the rar cargo area. Put some tie downs on it or fab up some type of holder. If you don't care about loss of cargo area, do this.

I have a mounted 35" BFG MT aired up to 35 psi in the stock location.. it's pretty bald, but it fits, and with some work I can get both the seat to click into locked position, and the liftgate to function normally.

What's the big deal if the seat isn't locked, I think someone was whining about that... :finga:

DO NOT PUT THE TIRE ON THE ROOF... official newb status when you flop

In the pic, its without the rim but it's now in that spot with the rim and it fits fine. I'm going to build some kind of mount for my OBA as well as the tire behind that thing.

Tire really didn't help in this situation. I'd gotten it tippy without the tire up top before, but this was the first time where I got it to that point and it didn't stop. Just went flop.

Another thought for fitting better in the back is to purchase someone's used tire w/25% tread left as that will help somewhat vs. a brand new full tread 35".

Or do as some CJ people I have known. No spare, just a plug kit and an air pump. If you have a high pressure bottle and a rachet strap you could include internal patches too. You could do this with a 33" tire for absolute emergencies, at least until you are locked on both ends.

Smart Ass Thought: Mount it to hood Land Rover style, that would piss them off more. First we get coils on all four corners then we start putting the spares on the hoods. You might have some room to recess it a bit to help visibility. :smt002

Cue-Ball
05-05-2005, 05:48 PM
Yea I thought about the plug thing but not sure I want to go there. The flats I have gotten have been from hitting rocks on the street and they tend to tear big gaps in the tires, and since this is my DD I don't want to be on the side of the road for an hour patching a tire up.

JohnBoulderCO
05-05-2005, 06:07 PM
What tires are you running if you are tearing them on the street?

Cue-Ball
05-05-2005, 06:12 PM
Well those were with some "street" type tires, and the same has happened to my wifes car.

There is a place near my house that after a rain the rocks slide down the hill onto the street and when you come around the turn BANG if your not ready flat tire (now perhaps if we took that turn at a more reasonable speed, then we might not have had these issues in the past)

bump from beyond the grave!

yeah yeah yeah I read that most said they could fit a 35 in the stock location, but I tried... it's close but no cigar. Did anyone trim some of the plastic on the rear door or do any trimming on the seat frame for more clearance?
my spare is maybe 50% and at about 25psi.

I would like to have it like what Cam was talking about "seat to click into locked position, and the lift gate to function normally." maybe this weekend I'll break out the grinder for the rear door and get some clearance there. Maybe I'll try it again at 20 psi and see if it's any better...

fpkites
01-23-2010, 06:59 PM
What if you air down the spare? Carrying a compressor or even CO2 doesn't take up all that much room. Pretty sure some people do that with 35s.

Hurricane 4x4

I air down my 33" spare to nothing by pulling the valve core to get it to fit in the cargo area

IndyZJ
01-23-2010, 11:52 PM
My 33x12.5 spare JUST fits at regular pressure in the stock location with full tread, but I lay it down anyway and have plenty of room around it. I think you'd have to let the air out of a 35 and/or trim the plastic on the hatch to put it in the factory spot and not affect the seat.

i have a slightly used 35" tire that fits vertically in the stock location, seats fold back and door closes. now, mounting it in the stock location is another story. for now i just use a ratchet strap to the stock location loop thingy.

This is essentially what I do, only I haven't even tried to put the rear seats up (or even in) for a few years so I don't know if it would all fit. I never have rear passengers, and I hate having things obstructing my rear view, so I just keep the seats flat and pack it up like tetris.

I hate all of you. In the WJ you cant even stand a 35" tire upright in the rear. I have mine laying down in the back, it HOGS my space. I need to get it on my rear bumper asap

JohnBoulderCO
02-02-2010, 11:24 AM
So true for the WJ.
You can get a 31" (245/75 16) in the wheel well (if you haven't cut it out), a skinny 33" laying flat on the floor doesn't take up too much space, but a wide 35" takes up half the cargo area.
Move it to the rear bumper and life is good again. :D

heres a few pics from my camera phone. its a full size 35 x 12.5 used all terrain. it just touches the seat and the tailgate. but it closes. i also forgot to mention it might make a difference that i have my interior panel on the tailgate removed. so that might give me like another inch to work with. i took it out a long time ago and never put it back in.

what he said! :overkill:

and to make this post relevant: yes you can fit a 35x12.5 in the stock location, at 30psi, with the rear seat locked, and without any mods to the rear hatch cover or seat back. it's hella tight and has to be in there just right, but it fits and the door closes easily.

I'd be willing to say that with some trimming, beating, seat mods, and more I'd bet you could fit a 37 or maybe a small 38" inside.

what were you thinking about working out?

I have all the stuff for my WJ swap, the only thing slowing me down is figuring out how to adapt the ZJ abs to the WJ knuckles, but I think I have that figured out too, I just need a couple of small things from the junkyard.

if you were interested in my U-turn setup I also have a matching KOR trackbar conversion that has already been shortened to match the OTA bracket you need to run this "higher" steering than stock.
