This is first shot, turns out that my bearing puller is a piece of crap and Dave is borrowing a different one from his shop so we can try moving it a little. Anyway, too deep?

From the looks of it, yes, it's too deep. But you need to hold more pressure on the pinion yoke when you're checking the pattern. You're not getting an accurate enough picture or pattern to be 100% sure on it. With a little more resistance against the yoke, your pattern should be more distinct.

Oh yeah, and shouldn't this thread be titled HP 60 gear pattern? What're you wasting time on a 30 for? :finga:

It's in the plans, but with how close the wheelin' season is, this is all I've got :finga:

your pics suck...learn how to use a camera and a computer. but from what i can see, yes, it does look too deep.

and i'm gonna have to move this to the newbie section since it's related to a D30. please read the forum rules in the sticky post at the top of the page before posting next time newbie! :overkill:

Considering it's about gear setting in an axle which is used in many built rigs on this forum, it's staying. Well, that, and because I'm an admin and your a moderator :weedman:

new pattern. It's odd, it looks deeper in the picture than it does in the.

Still appears to be a little too deep. Getting close though. Try again! :finga:

I don't know, it looks text book perfect in person. I can't for the life of me figure out why the picture makes the patern look deeper than it is in person, and it's pissing me off.

I was going to say it's hard to tell in the pic. I helped to setup my D30 today actually, so I learned a bit more about pattern reading, etc.

We ran about what the Dana stuff had for shims, and the pattern was perfect, I mean like there's no way it could be better perfect. Good backlash and all! :supz: Got the pinion preload set today, new seals, balljoints, drilled for locker, just need to spread the case, throw the carrier back in and it's done... then it's the 8.8.

You done yet? :goodman: hahahaha

I helped with 3 diffs this weekend, and got alot of tips and tricks... I'd need to buy a few more tools, but otherwise I could setup my own gears without too much trouble.

Reading the pattern isn't too hard if you pay attention to how they where lapped. Follow that and don't worry too much about havine a textbook pattern.

still too tight....but getting closer!

BTW, i know what you mean about them looking better in person. I snapped some pics of the gear setup like you're doing when I did the 8.8 gears and they always looked 10x worse in the pics....
