View Full Version : Quiet tube style mufflers?

After the suspension is finished up, I'm going to be needing a tube style muffler. I'm looking for something that I can fit into a tight space and still hear the radio over. I had a Flowmaster 70 series, and I don't really want anything that's going to be any louder than that. I know glasspacks are pretty small, but I alway thought they were a bit noisy. Can anyone give me a recommendation?

I've been looking at the Flowmaster Hushpower series:

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=191815&prmenbr=361

18'' x 4'' x 5.50'' case, 24" overall. $130 seems a little high though.

Also looked at the Stainless Works smooth tube mufflers:

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=191815&prmenbr=361

3 1/2" diameter, 24" overall. A little better at $110...

Maybe I'm just getting old, but after being in a jeep for five or six hours, in 90+ temps, loud exhaust gets kind of annoying to me. Cheaper is better, but I'll pay the coin if it'll be worth it.

I can tell you one thing, the Dynomax Bullet that I had was NOT quiet. Although it may have been hard to judge b/c of the turn-down.

I've been extremely pleased with my Moroso Spiral muffler. It's barely bigger than the Bullet mufflers, but sounds very much like a Magnaflow. Great size, all steal, $50, good sound. I think it's "technicaly" race only, but I've yet to have problems with it. I've run it with a tailpipe and a turn down. Still good with a turn down.

I have a Dynomax "oval" welded muff... it's a strait through perferated pipe wrapped with fiberglass... aside from the fact you can look through the thing, it's alot quieter than a flow 40.

Look at the magnaflow round series. like the 4 inch diameter ones.

Hey Matt, I'm looking at getting one of the moroso mufflers- Jegs shows three options though: 2 1/2", 3" and 3 1/2"... but they don't say what those numbers mean. The specs show the dimentions at 4"x12"X18" so what the heck are the three options for? Which size did you run on your ZJ?

That's your exhaust diameter. Can't remember if it's ID or OD, but for a 4.0 I'd run 2.5, for a V8 3.

What Dave said. The 4 x 18 x 12 is for the overall size of the muffler. 4" diameter, 18" long overall, and 12" long case.

BTW - I got the 2.5" for my 4.0 and I love it. MUCH quieter than the glass pack I had. I was going to show off some pics of it until Ogdak posted up his exhaust writeup, effectively making mine look like dog poo.

Edit: I'm pretty sure that exhaust is almost always measured by ID

Sweet, thanks Dave (and Hank). I've got a v8, so I'll go with the 3".

Your pipes up to that point may only be 2.5" so an adapter may be needed.

Ahh, forgot about that. I'll go check the diameter and adjust accordingly.

Ok, the tip is 3", but the actual exhaust pipe is only 2 1/2" so that's what I'll go with. No sense in using adapters when you don't have to.

That's what I have. Cheap and it works.

thats basicly the dynomax bullet and it was definitly louder than the flow70. I had the bullet for a short while and when I took it off after about a year to change mufflers again the guts were broken and the glass was breaking out making it like a straight pipe kinda loud...

Yeah it's fairly loud, but I don't have to shut it off in the drive thru, so it's not too bad. The truck on the other hand, it pisses people off that are 2 cars ahead in the line trying to talk to the speaker :D

Hank, I'm running a louved core glass pack that the local exhaust shop had on the shelf. It's pretty quite, actually I think my Magnaflow was loud.
I can get a sound clip if you want.

Nah, I'm happy with the moroso. I think my noisy glass pack problems were due to abuse and poor installation. It was a temporary fix. The moroso and the *bling* mini cat are doing the trick for now. Thanks for the offer tho.

No problem.
I've gone from stock, to magnaflow, to nothing to my current set up and I must say I'm very pleased with it. Nice to be able to talk with passengers while crusing, though I've gotta talk over the tires now lol
