I just spent 2 weeks putting a d44 front and d60 rear. These diff.s came from a 1975 w200 dodge 3/4 ton. I was happy with the width(65" wheel mount to mount).

problem is I have allready broke gear teeth off the crown gear.

So now I am starting all over. I would like to know what models of 3/4 ton trucks would have stronger differentials. But I want to stick with a set of diff's that are common(easy to find). I don't mind doing the work of moving the pumpkin to the other side but I do not want to get into axel shafts that are other than stock replacement length

after all that work, why not just replace the broken ring and pinion?

so you broke a 30 year old gear. Try just replacing it.

I guess I will try to find new gears.... I was just thinking that maybe the 44 I chose was a pile of junk or something. If you guys think a new gear set will make the difference then there is no sence changing out the whole diff.

By all means change the gears .. New Gears will handle those 35's..

hold on a tick. Figure out what size u-joints you have in the D44 and also pull the shafts and see if they neckdown in the middle. Depending on manufacturer, there were big changes in D44 strength around 74-76 (basically they're CJ D30 strength before that)

they do get smaller than the d30 , just before the splines, kinda like a little notch, How do I find out what size the u joints are?

The reason the swap was origionaly planned is because I had the 5 ball bearing joint in the 30

I have never broke a axel shaft but I use to only rum 32" tires.

If this diff is garbage then please tell me, and I will get rid of it, I want a GO JEEP not a SHOW JEEP!!!!!

tell me how to figure out the 'u' joint size....anyone please

I have a 68 J3000, I think it is a 44 would that closed nuckel diff. be a better diff. than this dodge thing I have?

the ujoint cap diameter

1 1/16" = tiny
1 3/16" = better

they are about 1 3/16 so I am going to buy the gearset like you's have suggested, thanx

except i have someone possibly willing to sell a d60, if that deal falls through I will definately try some new gears

Is the notch in the axel shafts in the d44 a normal to see?
I would imagine if they brake, aftermarket axels wouldn't have the notch?

sorry for all the questions.
maybe a year or so down the road I can return the favor and answer some of these questions that i would imagine are repeated 101 times a year

Its new on this forum so no big deal.. Those axles will "probobly" hold up to some less than hardcore wheeling.. If you have to buy new axles you can get much stronger axles and problem solved...

(Unless one day you decide to go bigger at which time you will have to find that 60.. :smt003 )

don't worry, that little 'notch' just before the splines I think is just part of how your old seal works. Some older D44 shafts are literally 1/2 the diameter of the splined section inside the axle housing, then they neck out again as they reach the u-joint. Yours don't sound like that...
