View Full Version : D30 Tie Rod Flip Inserts

nate

Machined out of 1018 mild steel, $10 ea.

What you do is drill out your driver's knuckle to 3/4" and put the insert in place. You can run a few tack welds on it to hold it in place, but you don't have to.

What this does is allows you to put your tie rod on top of the driver's knuckle. Higher up... less chance of slamming it on rocks.

Nah, should only be 0.37 I think. Not sure how thick I can have it for that price though.. Worst case I'll throw it in a bubble mailer for like $0.57. LA ZJ... let me check how many I have left and I'll get back with you. I have a few guys in the local area that are getting some. My brother only made 10 or 15. He said he will make some more though.

Yeah, guess it could go USPS for cheap. I remember going up with quite a few sea planes carrying mail down in SE AK. Not sure how regular their mail is down there. I'd take a couple if my steering wasn't already done.

You can send me some after you get your bro to make more - I wanna wait and see how your steering setup turns out first anyway. ;)

Cool. I was trying to figure out what the $$ in my Paypal was from. $11 would have been fine too. My brother is the one making these. He works part time as a machinist, and it going to school for metal fab (welding/machine work) full time. He made me a few and I told him if he had time to make some more I'm sure other people could use them. It takes him about 30 mins to make 1, since the taper is done on a lathe (no reamer). After materials and his time, the $10 is a very fair price. He said that price is good for anyone I know, otherwise they are $60 ea

BTW, the money all goes to him, I figure it can help him out with gas, school bill, etc.

He's also making me a vent for my 8.8 that will mount where the ABS sensor goes. With the vent mounted in the tube, I keep on getting oil pumped out the vent line, so this should stop that. I'll post some pics when he's done, he said he'd make some for whoever is interested.

If you guys have any other small pieces that you'd like fabbed up, my brother said he'd make it too.

No problem. My brother is the one that makes them, all the money from these go to him to help pay for college. I'm just helping him out by selling them.

05-28-2005, 10:41 AM
do these afect the sterring at all and can you do them on both sides to raise the steering up. Has anyone yet put them on and are driveing with them. I'm thinking of getting one.

LouisianaZJ
05-28-2005, 10:54 AM
the drivers side is pretty easy to do

the pass side is substantially harder

nate
05-28-2005, 01:28 PM
I wouldn't be selling these if these had a negative effect on steering. All you are doing is putting the tie rod over the knuckle on the driver's side. That puts the tie rid straight on a lifted rig. Helps to keep it out of the rocks, stumps, etc.

Plug for the 8.8? Vent do you mean? My brother made that for me. Took him a bit of time to make it though, not sure what he would charge to make more. He will be up here in AK visiting me (lives in Maine) so no bushings for a few weeks.

I am now running this on my jeep, I had to trim the actual insert as it was about 1/8" to long, stuck out the bottom of my knuckle. as for steering issues the on'y one I have is that the adjusting section, on the drivers side hits the sway bar mount when turning so I did some clearancing, other than that they are ok. wouldn't do it again.

LouisianaZJ
07-07-2005, 06:44 PM
well yeah, obviously you would want to move the swaybar mount up over ther

nate
07-08-2005, 06:38 AM
My stock steering setup banged against the swaybar brackets with just 4.5" of lift. I think it depends on your setup.

As for the the insert being too long, I'm not sure. This is the first I hear of it being a problem and I've sold around 40 of them. Perhaps you have a different thickness knuckle for one reason or another?

They are the same measurements as the ones other companies are selling, that I know... just there's are over 2x the price.

nate
01-10-2006, 12:01 AM
My brother has about 15 of the inserts left if anyone is interested in picking one up. He might make another small batch on the CNC, but it all depends if he has the time, as he's pretty busy at school.

They are $11 shipped and you can paypal him at warrior_yfm350x@yahoo.com

Or if you want to pay using another method, just let me know.

will that work with the drag link on a WJ as well?

nate
01-10-2006, 01:13 AM
I'm not really sure... I've never seen a WJ close enough to look at the steering.

Anyone know if the taper is the same on the WJs?

JohnBoulderCO
01-10-2006, 01:49 AM
Taper is the same, but if you flip your drag link on top of the knuckle the bend will be pointing the wrong way.

One way to correct this is to cut the drag link TRE end, rotate and weld back up with a plate. Then you can flip your draglink and your tie rod.

I was just out before looking at this, and I was wondering. If I were to just rotate the passenger side of the drag link so that It were able to be mounted on top of the knuckle, could I leave the pitman arm side of the drag link as is while doing so...it would seem like the ideal steering geometry to compensate for the lift.

JohnBoulderCO
02-22-2006, 09:33 PM
Yes, if you cut the passenger TRE, rotate and weld, then you could leave the driver side (pitman arm) alone. It would work fine.

One of these days I'm gonna do a write up on this mod, with pics.
