Ok... question. I've read a few books and phamplets on welding, and the more I read, the more I'm confused.

I got a new welder, and I was reading the little book Lincoln gives with the instructions.

They say for thick metals, you want to pull and for thin stuff, you want to push. Pushing makes a colder weld according to the book. Now I've always thought just the opposite and I've read that in a few books as well.

Little help here... Are they right?

So know one knows? :smt042 I was figuring there'd be a welding god on here or something :prayer: I reckon I'll follow what Lincoln is telling me and see how that works out.

Get this... the 135 is 90 amp, and the 175 is 130. WTF? They need to call them the 90 and 130 then.

Yes, they are right. Pulling is prefered when welding thick material because you get better penetration.

See and I thought it was the other way because you were pointing the heat toward the unwelded metal and kinda preheating it.

I welded some 3/16" together at a 90*... whatever you call that weld, and I wasn't able to break it apart, it was just bending the... just welded it on 1 side too. I must be doing something right.

I am self taught, so that's why I was asking what is the correct method. I have always pushed. Bad habit from stick welding I guess.

I'm still getting used to this machine and pulling instead of pushing, so those beads aren't the best or anything, but threads without pics suck.

i was told pushing get better penetration. i just watch my puddle. if its not penetrating i use the wire and work the metal so that everyhtign gets nice and hot. this is not for down hand/up hand/ or verticle.

So if you hold the gun at 90* and drag towards you, is it pushing or pulling? :flipoff2:

Picked up my Lincoln manual...

Pushing for Mig

I kind of browsed the flux section (didn't care to much because I don't use the flux stuff) and I think you pull for flux.

You sure? I have the Lincoln books that came with the welder. Thick stuff they say to pull, thin push.

I dunno... I'll just weld and not think about it.

I don't know... it's sunday morning and I am by far way to lazy right now to open the manual and double check.... I could be wrong
