Yes I searched...

My 242 broke. I am looking at replacing it with a 231. My rear driveshaft is pretty short already. How long are both of the cases? I know the 249 is slightly longer than the 231, but what about the 242?

I can go measure mine if you would like... :smt003

From the bolt flange to the back of the tail housing is 15" Thats measureing it while installed so that is just the housing measurement....And I was laying on my back in my front yard in the dark .. So I may be a little off.. :smt003

The 249, 242 and 231 are all quite similar in length. I have run all 3 with the same driveshafts without any problems.

my 93 249 and 89YJ 231 were both 16 7/8" from the tranny mount surface to the end of the output shaft

OK.. the guy with this particular 231 says the length is 17", so it's likely 16 7/8 like you're saying Maine. I like this one because it's got an SYE and it's lower miles... Now for a stupid input shaft question: I know it's 23 spline, so that means it will work with my 42RE fine right? Or are there differing depths of the 23 splined input? My searches haven't paid off. Here's a pic:

most everything but a 4cyl has 23spline.
that looks like the long input shaft.

if it's the era as the 242 you have, you can swap the input shafts easy.

Well if the input on that TJ 231 will work with the tranny output shaft in my ZJ, I would not need to swap inputs. And I have also heard that many ZJ inputs are incompatible with TJ tcases because the planetaries are different.

I'm aware that the 4.0Ls and the V8s usually came with 23 spline tcases, at least after 1994. My 242 came out of a 96. Unfortunately, it's 300 miles away (I'm at school) so I can't measure the input, so I have to figure it out the hard way. I know it has the new style output with the single tailcone, leading me to believe that they are of the same era. However, I do know the case says new PROCESS gear on it, rather than new VENTURE. I am assuming that the TJ case is an NV231 since it's out of a 98. A pic of my 242:

So I think that means it will work, right? And yes, I feel very stupid asking this.

I'm glad to find this thread. Is there any others on this topic? I have a fairly fresh (opened, rechained and resealed by the dealership just before the Jeep was toasted by a high speed pursuit) '93 ZJ NV249 to swap for the NV231 in my '93 Cherokee.
Only reason I have for doing so is the 231 seems to be wanted around here, and the 249 isn't. (let's the wife drive in full time 4x4 as well)

here is a few threads that might help with the input info: basicly there were 3 input length for the ZJ and the 93-95 had an internal collar inside the input.... just depends on what you have to start with
what year transmission did you do the swap with?
the 96 242 doesn't have the internal input collar and SHOULD have the .840 input length.
