found a 242 transfer case for my zj, but the back part where the rear driveshaft slides in is different.

mine looks like:

the one i was going to buy looks like:

so, between my pos 249 and the new 242, can i make it work or is it a different setup that can't be interchanged? whats involved? thanks.

everything i found doing a search has to do with people asking about the input shaft lengths, not about the rear section of the t-case like i am asking about.

That will work ...The only difference is that on one the shaft slides into the case on the other it stays outside.. It is the same ....No problemo....

i had a member pm me some info and i been talking with some friends, from my understanding it should work okay, but the rear driveshaft may need to be shortened ~1", or maybe just grab the driveshaft that went to the t-case, does this sound right?

I actually pushed my axle back about 1 3/4 " when I put the 231 in..

It definatly needed it.. I couldnt get the shaft on at all... :smt003

So I would say your estimation is correct.. I would have pushed the axle back 2" but it was getting very close to the gas tank..

Nope, thread contains the answer now for future searches so it'll stay!

I'm a little more lenient on shit in newb tech than the other forums.

The one on the right(external slip yoke) is weaker especially when a sye is used. 242
