I saw an ad in the back of Dirt Sports magazine.

How about a 249J transfercase that has low range lock std? How about one without a viscous coupler?

I had some time so I called them. One of the mechs manufactures them locally and "it works". They are supposed to call me back with the particulars. I'm not holding my breath on the call back.

I'm not so sure about this... If there's not VC and even if it has low lock, what are they using to transfer power when in high range?

SO they take a 249, and essentially make it a 231? How?

Think I remember John doing this - hacking up the VC leaving 2wd and 4lo (locked)

Yep that is what Zebra John did. Then it blew up on (38's ?)and he got the Atlas.

The mech called me back and told me that the VC is very similar to a limited slip and that without it, you just have the same transfercase except without the power transfer to the front wheels.

Why, so you can tell them you want one then when they get it all ready you can drop off the face of the earth?

The 249 is actually stronger than the 231 is it not? This could be good news, depending on the price.

I don't think that was my question. All the cases are so close strengthwise, that it is negligible... I was asking how you go about making a 249 into a case that has the same ranges as a 231 would. From what I've gathered in this thread, you either just remove the VC or cut it in half so it can't transmit power/ function as a limited slip...?

And yes I agree that this would be a great solution for folks with 249s.

or at the very least responded to one of my PM's saying tha you weren't interested.

at any rate, Jon took the VC out of his 249, then on the first trip out it blew up and I had to drag him out of pritchett. I can't say whether or not it was the modified 249 that caused the problem, or if it would have happened to any other case. .....

Why try to mod a 249 when there are so many 231s out there? I picked up a 231 for $300 and it has a SYE already installed.

I agree. I got a low mileage one from a 98 TJ w/ SYE and driveshaft for 400. Just had the shaft lengthened locally and now I'm set. Anyone need 242 parts out of a NP242 J? It's from a 96 ZJ... The only thing broken is the differential assembly. [/pimpingmybrokenparts]

I agree though, just get a 231 and be done.
