ok basically i have been running my zj with the np242 with 36s and the rear locked with a 4.0 for the past year but after this summer the zj will be on full widths locked and 38s. do you think the np242 can handle this? and suggestions for other tcases besides the atlas and np231 thatll bolt up to my tranny. thanks.

I've seen chains stretched on 3 of them. 1 guy was running 33s, the other 2 were on 31s.

Ok, so the next ? is I have heard there is an HD 242. Is this true & if so what is the diff between a normal 242 & an heavy duty 242?

If you haven't broken that t-case yet, there should be no reason to swap it out for something stronger provided you gear your axles correctly. If your axles are geared correctly, even with 38" tires, the parts that should be feeling the addes stress of the tire size should be the axleshafts, not the driveshafts, t-case, trans, or engine.

and FWIW, the chains stretch on ALL chain driven t-cases, 242, 249, 231, or anything else that is chain driven...just depends on how many miles are on them. A stock vehicle that's never taken offroad will probably have a severely stretched chain by the time it hits 200k miles...the chain stretching is not the fault of the t-case being weak, it's just the physics of a chain...any chain on any application will stretch after so much use.

No problems here with my SYE'd 242, ran 31's (and 32 Swampers) with 4.56's, and now 38's with 5.13's.
