4.0 = 90 amps
5.2 = 136 amps
5.9 = > 136 but I forget

There's some exceptions in there, but I think that that's the general rule of thumb.

I want to say the 5.9 is 140 or even 160, i'll look into that tonight.

i know there is a guy that sells 160 amp alternators for the 4.0 on ebay, but i do not have any personal experience with them...if you're looking for something better than the stocker.

5.9 alternators will fit in the 4.0 location; they're all the same casting for the most part, just wound differently.

Yeah the 5.9L alternator would be a nice upgrade, though they are hard to find. They only came on ZJs too, the Dodge trucks with the 360 have a 136 amp. The parts stores I went to carried the 136 as the biggest as well. So if your 5.9L alternator would die, you would replace it with a 136amp I guess, unless you went to the dealer for a new one.

The 4.0 had the 120 amp I believe if it's got the electric seats, etc... basically the Limited package.

Check this out: http://98jeepzj.com/tech/alternatorupgrade.html

If you still not sure, I *think* the amperage is listed on the back of the alernator. It's been a while though, so don't quote me on that.

Not all 5.2's had 136.. Mine had a 90 amp alt.. Which I believe is std. in the Laredo package.. I put a 136 out of a Limited in mine .. :mrgreen:

I picked up a 136A V-8 ZJ application for my wife's 97 XJ 4.0 and found the case to be bigger in diameter. Had to clearance the mounting bracket that bolts to the block to make it fit. Nothing serious just a bit of grind/trial fit and repeat until good. That and maybe a pulley swap and you're good to go.

Yeah the case is a bit larger. On the ZJ it fits fine though.
