i know theres already a post on here about it but,

i always get conflicting answers to this question and it seems like no one i ask is 100% sure,

what 231's will swap in place of a 249 or in place of a 242, i know it depends on the year but i never seems like anyone knows for sure what year 231 swaps in directly

any help would be greatly apreciated! :(

231, 249, 242 all have the same BP
when NP became NV, there was an input gear pitch change in 94/95 (not a specific date)

there are 231s with 21spline inputs and 23spline inputs. the 21 can be swapped for a 23 from a 231, 249, or 242.

There are also different length input shafts

you're going to need to swap the input shaft, no real way around it unless you're really lucky so don't even try to figure that one out. Just get one in the 94- or 95+ range depending on how old your rig is and deal with the input shaft swap.

Seems that more often than not, the 96+ ZJ's have the short input shaft, but the only way to be SURE is to pull your tcase back from your tranny and check yourself.

one more question: how does the crossmember swap, is it a direct swap or are mods required?

sorry bout all the questions, but ive been known to get in over my head on some previous projects and i just wanna have my shit planned out as much as possible

Just pick up 242 or 231 and be prepared to take apart your 249 and swap the inputs. Its not hard.. Use my writeup I think its on the writeup section here.. And someone told me its on Kevins Jeep parts site... It is also on the tech page at Jeep Horizons...

Anyway......

Sometimes driveshafts work sometimes they dont... SO also be prepared to have problems with your rear shaft... (Just in case..)
Crossbrace works fine.. No problem....

So.. To recap... Plan on swapping input . (if you dont have to then great..) and be prepared for drive shaft problems.. (this probobly wont be an issue.. )
Hard to be prepared for everything when you are working with an unknown...

Good luck...
